Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Matthew 28
Jesus Has Risen

28 After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.

2 There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. 4 The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.

5 The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. 6 He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. 7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.”

8 So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9 Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.”

Oh LORD,
Our God,
How Excellent is Your Name over all the earth!
How Wonderful, How Holy and How Perfect!

By now you have figured out that we are looking at the Gospels, not Chapter by Chapter, but "Story by Story". We have been in the Book of Matthew since 9/11/22, and will be wrapping it up in the next few days. Then we will start the shortest, and what some scholars say is the oldest, Gospel of Mark. Many of the Stories are the same, but Mark is much more terse in his reporting, as if he is Joe Friday saying "Just the Facts, Ma'am."

While Matthew seemed to be writing for his own Jewish People, by quoting Scripture and pointing out fulfilled Prophecies, Mark seems to be writing to Gentiles, specifically Romans, who preferred a crisp, concise, report of events. While Matthew reads like a Bible Commentary or even an Apologetic, Mark reads like a newspaper report. When we get to Luke, we will see how the "Nice Young Doctor" tells the same Stories. His compassion and attention to detail about the Human issues (Childbirth, Disease, Healing, Personalities, etc) make Luke's Gospel the most humane of the Four. When we get to The Gospel of John, we see a whole new perspective, that of a Theologian.

Matthew, Mark, and Luke are called The Synoptic Gospels because they all "see the same" events, told from their own perspectives.

There are a few events that appear in all four books. While the Nativity is only covered in two (Matthew and Luke), the Sermon on the Mount in Three, (Matthew, Mark, and Luke), we will see some unique Stories in John (The Marriage Feast at Cana, The Woman caught in Adultery, etc), but I don't want to get ahead of myself.

All Four Gospels contain the Suffering, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus. It is the CORE of the Gospel, which means "Good News". It comes from the Greek word that is the root of Evangelist, meaning a Messenger of Good News.

The Good News of all Four Gospels is:

HE IS RISEN!
