Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Matthew 27

The Burial of Jesus

57 As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. 58 Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him. 59 Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away. 61 Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there opposite the tomb.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Our Father,
Who Art in Heaven,
Hallowed be Your Most Holy and Wonderful Name!
How Awesome You Are,
and How Glorious!
You Alone Are Worthy to Be Praised,
For You Alone Are My Strength And My Song,
My Rock and My Redeemer!
You Are The One True God,
And Know The End From The Beginning
and the Beginning From The End,
Because You Are The Beginning and The End of All Things.

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

God Bless America.

A neighbor of mine is a nice person, but is liberal to the extreme. We have had a few scraps in the past, but we have always been respectful to each other. Imagine my surprise when, during the past Midterm, I saw a Lawn Sign in front of her house for the incumbent Republican State Representative. I was shocked. I just HAD to ask her about it.

"Oh, Dave is WONDERFUL," she said. He really cares about our community. He's helping the elderly with Heating Costs, Food Assistance, and Safety issues. He's TERRIFIC! Then she added, with an obvious note of disgust, "Even if he IS a REPUBLICAN!"

I replied that Dave must be really good to cause her to put a Republican Lawn Sign in front of her house. I would have voted for Dave anyway, even though his opponent was a customer of mine. But the endorsement from my (very opinionated) neighbor put it over the top.

Nevertheless, it must be very hard for Dave, being a State Rep for one of the most liberal and affluent counties in what is arguably the most liberal State in the Union. I would have to check the roster, but he may be the only Republican in the State Legislature. (I'll look into that!). Even if he is not the only one, he is part of a tiny minority. Although Dave has served in that capacity for many years, it must be very lonely in the place where the proceedings were once controlled by Whitey Bolger's Big Brother. (Sigh).

Now, lest you think my political musings are totally irrelevant to Today's Reading, let's look at Joseph of Arimathea.

He was a Pharisee, and probably a Member of the Sanhedrin. He was wealthy, and a Person of High Standing. He would have been involved in decision-making, but would have been a dissenting voice, and either alone, or part of a very tiny minority. Perhaps his only ally would have been Nicodemus, who seemed to be a nice enough fellow, but a little timid. After all, Nicodemus had gone to Jesus by night to ask his questions. Joseph, on the other hand, went right to Pontius Pilate to request the body of Jesus to provide a decent burial. He donated his OWN tomb for the burial, and some fine cloth for a shroud. (The Shroud of Turin, while disputed, is woven in a Herringbone Twill, which was expensive stuff. (It requires a four-heddle loom to produce this kind of weave, and takes much more time to weave.) Jesus had to be entombed before Sunset, so Joseph must have had the Burial Cloth on hand...perhaps reserved for his own funeral. And, then there were all those expensive perfumes and oils used to embalm the Body. Those may have come from Joseph's own reserve as well.

There are three very special "Josephs" in the Bible. All three of them had to stand alone against a tide of Public Opinion, and protect that which was RIGHT.

Joseph, in the Book of Genesis, stood alone, first in his family, then as a slave in Egypt, and, finally as the second-in-command to Pharaoh.

Joseph, the Foster Father of Jesus, had to protect his family in the face of Religion, Public Opinion, Herod's Massacre, and Small-Town Gossip.

Finally, Joseph of Arimathea stood alone against the Sanhedrin and the Roman Empire, and put his money where his mouth was.

With the help of God, when faced with adversity, let us be a "Joseph". The risk is worth it.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

God Bless America.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen

Pray for the peace of Europe. Incredibly after the experience of the two world wars a new European war is steadily spinning up in east central Europe where the two previous world wars generated. Wars are like typhoons, they escalate to higher and higher levels of violence until they stabilize at a permanently high level of violence and they spread geographically as they escalate in violence. This was why US Cold War diplomacy with the east bloc was so cautious to preclude the escalation, geographic spread cycle from ever starting, So pray now for the peace of Europe.

When we pray for peace, whether it is for Europe, Asia, or the World, we are actually praying for the Second Coming of Jesus. The Title of this Thread has been “Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem”, after Psalm 122:6, for 12 years.

The Purpose of the Thread is a Daily Devotional, Bible Study, and General Gathering of FReepers to pray. Praying for Jerusalem doesn’t exclude prayer for Europe or even our own Beloved Country. In fact we pray for Persecuted Believers in all countries every day, as well as for our Nation and the World. One doesn’t exclude the other.

So, indeed, we should pray for Peace in Europe, but it really isn’t the focus of this thread.

Thank you for joining in with us today.

Amen !!! <><

Psalm 35

Of David.

1 Contend, O Lord, with those who contend with me;
fight against those who fight against me!
2 Take hold of shield and buckler,
and rise up to help me!
3 Draw the spear and javelin
against my pursuers;
say to my soul,
‘I am your salvation.’

4 Let them be put to shame and dishonour
who seek after my life.
Let them be turned back and confounded
who devise evil against me.
5 Let them be like chaff before the wind,
with the angel of the Lord driving them on.
6 Let their way be dark and slippery,
with the angel of the Lord pursuing them.

7 For without cause they hid their net* for me;
without cause they dug a pit* for my life.
8 Let ruin come on them unawares.
And let the net that they hid ensnare them;
let them fall in it—to their ruin.

9 Then my soul shall rejoice in the Lord,
exulting in his deliverance.
10 All my bones shall say,
‘O Lord, who is like you?
You deliver the weak
from those too strong for them,
the weak and needy from those who despoil them.’

11 Malicious witnesses rise up;
they ask me about things I do not know.
12 They repay me evil for good;
my soul is forlorn.
13 But as for me, when they were sick,
I wore sackcloth;
I afflicted myself with fasting.
I prayed with head bowed* on my bosom,
14 as though I grieved for a friend or a brother;
I went about as one who laments for a mother,
bowed down and in mourning.

15 But at my stumbling they gathered in glee,
they gathered together against me;
ruffians whom I did not know
tore at me without ceasing;
16 they impiously mocked more and more,*
gnashing at me with their teeth.

17 How long, O Lord, will you look on?
Rescue me from their ravages,
my life from the lions!
18 Then I will thank you in the great congregation;
in the mighty throng I will praise you.

19 Do not let my treacherous enemies rejoice over me,
or those who hate me without cause wink the eye.
20 For they do not speak peace,
but they conceive deceitful words
against those who are quiet in the land.
21 They open wide their mouths against me;
they say, ‘Aha, Aha,
our eyes have seen it.’

22 You have seen, O Lord; do not be silent!
O Lord, do not be far from me!
23 Wake up! Bestir yourself for my defence,
for my cause, my God and my Lord!
24 Vindicate me, O Lord, my God,
according to your righteousness,
and do not let them rejoice over me.
25 Do not let them say to themselves,
‘Aha, we have our heart’s desire.’
Do not let them say, ‘We have swallowed you* up.’

26 Let all those who rejoice at my calamity
be put to shame and confusion;
let those who exalt themselves against me
be clothed with shame and dishonour.

27 Let those who desire my vindication
shout for joy and be glad,
and say evermore,
‘Great is the Lord,
who delights in the welfare of his servant.’
28 Then my tongue shall tell of your righteousness
and of your praise all day long.

HEN the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple:

He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered.
And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,

And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.

And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre.
