Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Matthew 27
The Crucifixion of Jesus
32 As they were going out, they met a man from Cyrene, named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross. 33 They came to a place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”). 34 There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, he refused to drink it. 35 When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots. 36 And sitting down, they kept watch over him there. 37 Above his head they placed the written charge against him: this is Jesus, the King of the Jews.
38 Two rebels were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left. 39 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads 40 and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!” 41 In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. 42 “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! He’s the king of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. 43 He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” 44 In the same way the rebels who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him.

Be Revealed.
Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.

of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.

1. Computers: In a few weeks, we will be observing the Twelfth Birthday of this Thread. The Template for the Thread has been preserved in more platforms than I can count, from a Windows 7 PC, through a laptop with Excel, a 2010 Mac Mini, and, now on another Mac, which gets updated frequently. Even so, many of our Readers are seeing the Thread on a host of even MORE platforms, such as their Smart Phones. One of our Beloved Prayer Warriors, who has been with me from the very beginning, has noticed some odd symbols appearing in the Opening Post. We are working together to clean that up. You may wonder what this has to do with Today's Scripture Reading, but stay with me. You will see how it all comes together in the end.
2. Laylah: Laylah was the daughter of an American Woman and a Chinese Nationalist Soldier. Her Father-In-Law, Mr. Lee, had been a wealthy Landowner in China during the tumultuous years of the "Cultural Revolution". He did not have slaves, or even indentured servants working on his property, but just happened to be a Landlord. When the Communists took over his village, they seized his land and arrested him. The put a clown hat on his head, dressed him in rags, and paraded him through the street. The people who had been his neighbors and employees pelted him with excrement, spat on him, and beat him with sticks as he was forced to trudge along. Around his neck was a very heavy wooden sign, declaring his "crime" of exploiting the people. The man groveled in shame and humiliation and begged forgiveness, but they killed him anyway. Nevertheless, Laylah remained a proud Left-Wing Liberal. I will NEVER understand why.
3. The Way of The Cross: In Jerusalem, there is a Walking Tour called the Way of the Cross. This is a very old Tradition, probably dating back to the Crusades. It is reproduced in Traditional Catholic Churches in a series of 14 little paintings or sculptures, and tell the story of Jesus Passion. Along the route, which wends its way through the Old City, there are now shops and cafes, and it's very crowded with Pilgrims, Tourists, and Shopkeepers. Sidewalk booths (called "souks"), line the route, and the proprietors of these establishments take full advantage of their location on the the road of Jesus's Passion. Jerusalem was leveled in 70AD, so nobody really knows the actual route, but a walk on the Via Dolorosa, with its 14 stops along the way, is a very edifying devotional for People of Faith.
The stops along the way (called "Stations") depict both Scriptural and Traditional incidents in the Passion of Jesus. One of them commemorates Simone of Cyrene helping Jesus carry His Cross. Since that incident is depictected in every Catholic Church all over the World, there a a LOT of pictures of Simon of Cyrene. Very few of them, however, depict Simon as an African man. Cyrene was in Northern Africa, so it is very likely that Simon was African.
4. Tying It All Together: The story of the Chinese Landlord shows us that people are the same through ages and locations all over the world. The incident of humiliation and death of an innocent man was accompanied by his carrying a heavy sign through the streets and being abused by people who had been neighbors and even "friends". Twentieth Century People were acting just like the mob who abused Jesus two centuries earlier. Some things never change. And, some people, (like the Landlord's Liberal Daughter-In-Law), never learn, even with such an extreme lesson.
Like the computer glitches in this thread, changing styles and technologies sometimes alter the depictions of genuine facts. Artists have had 2000 years to depict Simon of Cyrene. Christian Art has evolved from Catacomb Paintings, Byzantine Mosaics, Medieval Stained Glass, Renaissance Paintings, Baroque Ceilings, Twentieth Century Film-making, and the millions of miniature paintings and sculptures adorning churches as part of The Way of The Cross. And so, Simon has evolved over the years, and sometimes his story has too. In my own opinion, it is best to remember him as he appears in the Gospels.
This is the most Heartrending part of the Gospels and the same story appears in all four. There are some details that differ, but the Suffering and Passion is the same. How can anyone read it and not be changed?
Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM! And for the Preservation of the Valiant Israeli Nation!

when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull,
They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink.
And they crucified him, and parted his | garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots. And sitting down they watched him there;
And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left.
And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads,
And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.
Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said,
He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.
He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God.
The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth.

To: left that other site; All
These and all of the other posts are quite impressive. I would suggest that we ,believers or not, simply and humbly pray for peace. In the course of my fairly long life I have read and heard endless calls for ‘peace’ when that basically meant surrendering to the former Soviet Union or one of its surrogates, now as Europe appears to be drifting into a real war of the sort not seen since 1945 the media and a host of people here seem blindly complacent, or worse, insensately celebrating a true blind bloodlust as though the deaths of more and more and eventually our own military somehow gives them a darkly perverted moral satisfaction. This itself is evil, irrespective of the bona fides of any conflict. As a a phrase much used during the Cold War says, and it should be really true this time, ‘pray for peace, people everywhere’.
To: robowombat
Indeed. We are enjoined to “Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem” in Psalms, so that inspired the title of this Daily Thread.
However, you are quite right. Things could get really ugly in the East, the way things are going.
We need to pray for peace, not just in Jerusalem, but all over.

Psalm 5
To the leader: for the flutes. A Psalm of David.
1 Give ear to my words, O Lord;
give heed to my sighing.
2 Listen to the sound of my cry,
my King and my God,
for to you I pray.
3 O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice;
in the morning I plead my case to you, and watch.
4 For you are not a God who delights in wickedness;
evil will not sojourn with you.
5 The boastful will not stand before your eyes;
you hate all evildoers.
6 You destroy those who speak lies;
the Lord abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful.
7 But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love,
will enter your house,
I will bow down towards your holy temple
in awe of you.
8 Lead me, O Lord, in your righteousness
because of my enemies;
make your way straight before me.
9 For there is no truth in their mouths;
their hearts are destruction;
their throats are open graves;
they flatter with their tongues.
10 Make them bear their guilt, O God;
let them fall by their own counsels;
because of their many transgressions cast them out,
for they have rebelled against you.
11 But let all who take refuge in you rejoice;
let them ever sing for joy.
Spread your protection over them,
so that those who love your name may exult in you.
12 For you bless the righteous, O Lord;
you cover them with favor as with a shield.
