Matthew 27

The Soldiers Mock Jesus

27 Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him. 28 They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, 29 and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said. 30 They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again. 31 After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.

A career in Psychology was a dead end unless Mike got more education. A B.S. in Psych only qualified him to be one of "The Men in the White Coats" in a State Mental Hospital. And, since Dukakis was closing those down, Mike was now without a job.

My generous Mother-in-Law thought that this was a good time to send us to Israel, perhaps to renew Mike's Jewish Heritage, and so we went for three weeks on a journey I will NEVER forget.

We went to a lot of Archaeological Sites, and, of course, all the Tourist sites. When we got to the Western Wall, we had to be separated from each other, men on one side and women on the other. We were given little slips of paper upon which we were to write our prayers, slip into the cracks between the massive stones of The Wall.

My paper had a general prayer for "World Peace". (Oh Well), but Mike's was a specific prayer for a new career direction. The answer came to Mike right while he was standing there..."COMPUTERS". Upon our return, he immediately enrolled in computer school, and worked as an IT specialist for the next 25 years.

Jerusalem has been a spot for Tourism and Christian Pilgrimage at least since the Third Century, when St. Helena (The Empress Dowager and Mother of Constantine 1) paid the place a visit. It was a religious pilgrimage, undertaken due to huge political stresses at home. She is reputed to have found pieces of the Cross of Jesus, and she established churches in Bethlehem and Jerusalem. The Church of the Holy Sepulcher is on the site where St. Helena reportedly found the pieces of the Cross. While many of the sites she found are disputed today, the places are now centers of Pilgrimage for Christians, much like the Western Wall is a sacred site for Jewish People.

One of these sites is the Antonia Fortress, where the Roman Soldiers were garrisoned during the time of Jesus.

The guide was careful to note that it may not have really been the actual site, but then he took us down to the "basement" of the structure. Next to a supporting pillar, were some ancient holes in the stone floor that looked as if they had supported iron rings or chains of some kind. It send a chill through my entire body. Could this have been the place where the Soldiers mocked Jesus? It evoked a feeling of deep sorrow and compassion., so even if it wasn't the exact spot...It was for me.
