Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Matthew 27

Judas Hangs Himself

27 Early in the morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people made their plans how to have Jesus executed. 2 So they bound him, led him away and handed him over to Pilate the governor.

3 When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders. 4 “I have sinned,” he said, “for I have betrayed innocent blood.”

“What is that to us?” they replied. “That’s your responsibility.”

5 So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.

6 The chief priests picked up the coins and said, “It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.” 7 So they decided to use the money to buy the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners. 8 That is why it has been called the Field of Blood to this day. 9 Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: “They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price set on him by the people of Israel, 10 and they used them to buy the potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.”[a]

In the Intro to the TV Show "Rhoda", the main character does a monologue about GUILT. She says, matter-of-factly:

"I grew up thinking that WW2 was MY Fault!"

Well of course, she was wrong about that. WW2 wasn't HER fault. It was MINE! I grew up thinking the same thing. Could it be that both the fictional "Rhoda" and I both had so much angst and self-loathing that somehow we took responsibility for what, to us, was the WORST thing that had happened to the Planet. As we grew older, we learned that, even though we were the "Good Guys" the Government did things that were not very nice. So we had more stuff to feel guilty about. Even though we hadn't even been born yet, we were now branded as "The Oppressor" either because of our Birth in America, Our "White Privilege", Our Middle-Class upbringing, or the mere fact that we had roofs over our head. Little did we know that this guilt had a much deeper source. While not responsible for WW2, I WAS responsible for my own sinful nature from the deepest, darkest, corners of my own heart.

There is a growing trend in the world today that the way to solve problems is to throw money at them, as if that will make them all go away. Whether it is ethnic strife on the other side of the world, poverty, racism, religious hatred, or whatever, a big bundle of cash seems to be the only solution the "Powers That Be" can offer. Since that money has to come from somewhere, it is customary to make it a Zero-Sum-Game, meaning that society is divided into the "Oppressors vs. The Oppressed". And so, the Oppressors need to pay up to placate the Oppressed. That has become the new definition of "Justice", when it is not really "Just" at all. The "Oppressors" become more and more disgusted with the Injustice of being the blamed for something that happened so long ago that there is nobody alive today who remembers it. The "Oppressed", on the other hand, are never satisfied with the payouts, because money isn't the answer. And so, eventually, the "Oppressed" become the "Oppressors" and the "Oppressors" become the "Oppressed". Ayn Rand tried to make this point in "Atlas Shrugged", but she left out a very important part, which is the fact that all people, of whatever race, social status, wealth or lack thereof, religious or not, have a sinful nature that expresses itself with greed, hatred, and, yes, Oppression. This is not solved by money.

When Judas finally realized that he had betrayed an Innocent Man, he tried to "return" the money. But Jesus had already been arrested and was certainly going to be condemned to death. Returning the money was totally pointless at this stage. It did not stop the process of condemnation, or prevent the Crucifixion from taking place.

It didn't even assuage Judas's guilt. The money was irrelevant. It was tainted with evil. It didn't solve anything. The darkness, the evil, and the guilt still existed, and Judas could see no other way out of it.

But, there was a Way, and it is still The Way to this very day. The Way is also The Truth, and the Life.

I hope "Rhoda" realized this before she left this world.
