‘Catholicism is not proselytism,’ stated Pope Francis in a new interview, repeating his now-familiar comments on the subject of evangelization.
VATICAN CITY (LifeSiteNews) — Pope Francis has once again condemned Catholic efforts of evangelization, stating that “Catholicism is not proselytism,” while adding he has “no explanation” for the drop in vocations in recent decades.
The Pontiff made the comments in an interview he gave to Spanish language news outlet Mundo Negro back in mid-December, which was published on January 13.
He made the statement while fielding a question about the Second Vatican Council, having been asked whether the Church’s “mission” had changed since the Council and if “the Church and the people need another Mission.”
“Thank God, yes,” replied Francis. “Historians say that it takes 100 years for a council to have a complete result, so it is halfway there. So many things have changed in the Church, so many things for the better…”
The 86-year-old Pope referenced what he described as “two interesting signs.” Firstly he stated that the “first imprudent effervescences of the Council have already disappeared,” clarifying that he was referring to “liturgical effervescences.” His second suggestion that the Council was having an effect on the Church was that “anti-conciliar resistances are emerging, resistances that were not seen before, something typical of every process of maturity.”
Francis welcomed changes which he attributed to the Council, such as an increased “respect for cultures” and the “inculturation of the Gospel” – things which were an “indirect consequence of the Council.”
Highlighting this “evangelization of culture,” Francis expanded by saying that he was talking of “evangelizing, of announcing, and nothing more, with much respect.”
Consequently, he argued that “proselytism” was the “most serious sin that a missionary can have.”

Maybe should look into a mirror about vocations and develop a better under standing of what Vatican II has done to the Church. He also needs to review who the progressives are running the Curia and their objectives.
That would be news to St. Francis Xavier, Mother Theresa and thousands of others who have served over the centuries.
Francis would have condemned Jesus Christ for the “serious sin of proselytism”.
He’s no better than Caiaphas.
Kool Aid in Guyana.
“Maybe should look into a mirror about vocations”
Indeed. Young priests/seminarians generally despise Bergoglio. Whenever a tradition-leaning seminary booms with vocations, Bergoglio’s goons move to shut it down.
This Pope is a Heretic! Our Lord Jesus told His disciple, you are now a fisher of men. Lord Jesus told His disciples to Spread The Word.
This Heretic declares Evangelism to be illegitimate? To the Bergoglio Apologists on this forum, I ask you, what more evidence of this “Pope’s” unfitness do you need before the Scales are removed from your eyes?
Is Francis Spanish for brainless fool?
Step down, Bergolio.
Holy Spirit, cleanse Your Church, and send us good and faithful shepherds.
yes, this is really weird.
Church must grow and spread, otherwise it will go down!
What about the great commission of the Church Mt 28:19!
Thank God for my neighbor who proselytized, converted, evangelized me and brought me to Christ!
There is so much shyness in me, fear of rejection, so much dissatisfaction with the arguments put forth by humans for God, that I evangelize only quietly, by example, as Francis urges.
And that is not enough. Without my neighbor’s words, I would not know God.
So Francis regards the Great Commission as serious sin?
If anyone doubted that this pope is a heretic, doubt no more.
The Pope thinks his word is superior to God’s maybe?
Mark 16:15 “And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature”
**Holy Spirit, cleanse Your Church, and send us good and faithful shepherds.**
Double AMEN to that.
My New Year’s Resolution is to grow in courage. I congratulate your neighbor on her willingness to stick her neck out. I am Catholic and I do take the Great Commission seriously. Pope Francis is not going to stop me. Indeed, somebody needs to evangelize him!
“Historians say that it takes 100 years for a council to have a complete result, so it is halfway there. So many things have changed in the Church, so many things for the better…”
Right; so if parishes are half empty now, we’re to celebrate that in 50 more years they’ll be completely empty?
A much younger Benedict XVI warned at the time of the Council that if they proceeded as they were doing much of the infrastructure of the Church (churches, schools, hospitals, seminaries, etc.) would disappear; certainly the case in my area. 100% of our Catholic schools are gone, soon to be followed by parishes.
