'I Cannot Believe It's Inherently Sinful': Bishop Urges C of E to Change Teaching on Same-Sex Marriage

The Bishop of Worcester has written an open letter to his diocese detailing why he thinks same-sex unions should be celebrated by the Church.

It comes after a number Church of England bishops declared their support for same-sex marriage last November.

Rt Rev Dr John Inge has written an open letter to the Diocese of Worcester, setting out why he believes the "celebration and honouring of monogamous, faithful same-sex relationships" is a good witness and the Church of England's teaching on the issue should change.

Last year Bishop John confirmed his support for same-sex marriage in response to a booklet published by the bishop of Oxford entitled, 'Together in Love and Faith'. On Monday, he published a document to "set out his reasoning" for this support.

Bishop John argues that scriptures need to be re-examined in the light of modern culture and science.

"Most Christians […] would consider those who hold to creationism a gift to atheists and vocal agnostics like Richard Dawkins. Those of us who accept the theory of evolution and still hold to the scriptures as being the inspired Word of God ‘containing all things necessary unto salvation’, find in the passages in question truth at least as profound as literal historical fact," he states.

"Much has been made of the analogy between the present debate over same-sex relations and the grudging acceptance by the Church of England of contraception and marriage of divorcees in church, as well as the long battle for the acceptance of women’s ministry as priests and deacons."

Bishop John claims that whilst being "bound by the scriptures", the Church interprets them through the living "application of reason and experience" and as a result it has caused him to reassess his reading of them.

Yes, the slippery slope is very real.

Vatican 2 ushered in many of these changes....

in the long view of our society, it is always better when you have sound marriages with children....

Vat 2 basically said that reproduction was not the main reason for sex, that sex was for pleasure as well...."mutual satisfaction" of the partners....

so we've reduced the reproduction act to one of satisfaction....so if joe and jerry like to shove it up each others arse, and its satisfying, so be it....

we need parameters and we need societal norms and we have none....everything and any thing goes....

The final battle will be centered on the family... the image of our trinitarian God. Some are giving up without much of a fight.

Some are giving up without much of a fight.

Many, many, are agnostic and ignorant. Can’t we just Coexist, with everyone just being nice nice.

And not a Libertarian stance of Just Leave Me Alone, but a self righteous stance of Karen Kommandoes educating everyone how to be nice nice.

Gotta ask, where Karens born that way, or is there a BossyBitch School, and something in their diet sodas and wine that makes so many of them terminally stupid?

"celebration and honouring of monogamous, faithful same-sex relationships"

Yeah, all four of them.

It’s sinful because God says it is sinful.

No offense intended here to any Anglicans or Episcopalians, and despite the fact that his Wikipedia page asserts the good “Rt Rev Dr John Inge” has been married twice and has two daughters, but I suspect like many clergy of all faiths, that dude is either a closet-homosexual, a sociopath, a rapist, a serial killer or a psychopathy.

Time your pick, but that dude is not a man of God and his words are worthless.

You may be surprised to learn that the Church of England didn't much care about Roman Catholic's Vatican 2.

What is your citation in Vatican 2 documents, for your "Vat 2 basically said...." claim?

While I'm not thrilled with some of the ambiguity in Vatican 2, which allowed the ill-willed to make changes that were never intended, I'm not aware of anything that supports your assertion.

And yes, I have a copy at hand.

What is it that this Bishop doesn't understand in this Scripture passage?:

Romans 1
26 For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. Their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural,
27 and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in their own persons the due penalty for their error.

Believe your instincts, not Bible (The Word of God). Does this sound to you like a path to Paradise?
