Matthew 26

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial

31 Then Jesus told them, “This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is written:

“‘I will strike the shepherd,
    and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’[c]

32 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”

33 Peter replied, “Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will.”

34 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.”

35 But Peter declared, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.” And all the other disciples said the same.

Abba, Father,

Some Stories about Bragging:

1. The Resume; What a Resume this guy had! Anyone reading it would hire him at once. The list of credentials was impressive. Plus, he had a Rags-to-Riches Story that could bring a tear to the eye of even the most hard-hearted HR Person. And so, riding the wave of his impressive list of achievements, the guy had no trouble swooping in and getting the job.

One thing escaped the notice of the eager HR Person. Although there were no gaps in Employment in the Resume, there were an awful lot of jobs that didn't last very long. And there were so MANY references, it was impossible to check them all, and a lot of them were now defunct businesses anyway. But, the guy had been so confident, and seemed competent as well. He did a wonderful job presenting himself.

Once in the job, though, the guy seemed to fall apart. A little more research would have shown that the entire Resume had been fabricated. Before you think this could never happen, there is a politician at this very moment being exposed as not having attended any of the schools on his Resume. In other words, he lied to get where he is today. We can dismiss this with "All Politicians LIE", but that doesn't make it right.

2. I Can do it: Some jobs require a degree, but then someone comes along who got his education in "The School of Hard Knocks". These guys are often the BEST employees you could ever get, because they are grateful that the HR Person looked deeper than the Resume into their Character. They have to prove themselves though.

3. I THINK I can do it: This is not a lie, but is Positive Thinking taken to the extreme. A person is confident that he can do the job even if he is not qualified for it. Then he falls short. He really believed he could do it, but, when tested, failed. While I don't object to giving a guy a chance even if he doesn't have the credentials, he has to prove himself some other way. This is the position Peter was in when he said, "Even if I am to die with you, I will not desert you." I don't think he was lying to Jesus, but just, at the time, believed that would be the case. But, as we all know, Peter was immediately tested, and fell short. None of the other Apostles faced such a difficult test, but then, none of the others had bragged about being steadfast.

A word about the Rooster: Anyone who keeps chickens know that Roosters don't just crow in the early morning. Sometimes they crow whenever they want to. On the Island of Kauai, where feral chickens strut around doing what they please, the crowing of a Rooster at midnight has kept many an unsuspecting tourist awake. When Peter heard the first crowing, he may have thought nothing of it. He stayed on, and denied Jesus two more times. Then came the second crow. It was at that moment that Peter realized that he had failed. He was so distressed by his failure that he went back to his old job...being a fisherman (see the Gospel of John). He didn't feel worthy to be an Apostle anymore.

In the Gospel of John, we see how Jesus restores Peter, but for now we see him as a broken man, because of Bragging.
