Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Matthew 26
The Plot Against Jesus
26 When Jesus had finished saying all these things, he said to his disciples, 2 “As you know, the Passover is two days away—and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified.”
3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, 4 and they schemed to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him. 5 “But not during the festival,” they said, “or there may be a riot among the people.”

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Our Father in Heaven,
How Blessed and Wonderful is Your Most Holy Name!
How Magnificent,
How Holy,
How Sanctified and Glorious!
When I Awake in the Morning,
You Are There.
All through the day,
You Are with me.
And When I go to Sleep at Night,
You Are Still Watching Over Us All.
For You Neither Slumber Nor Sleep.
Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.
Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.
This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.
God Bless America.

Paul Simon was a songwriting genius, so it bothered me that he had "stolen" a melody from J.S.Bach without attribution. Even though Bach had been dead for 200 years, so there was no copyright infringement, a liner note on the album would have been nice and respectful. The melody was note-for-note copied from "Oh Sacred Head, Now Wounded" from St Matthew's Passion.
About twenty years ago, I joined a "Classical" Record Club. The medium was CD's, which had replaced Vinyl LP's for a while. I soon had a collection of CD's that took up most of my living room. When I decided to move back to to Massachusetts, I donated nearly all of the CD's to the Salvation Army, because I didn't even know if I could get a CD Player as they were nearly obsolete. I did, however, have an alarm clock that played CD's, so I salvaged a few of my favorites. One of these was "St. Matthew's Passion" by J.S. Bach. I loved the music, but there was a lot of "Recitative" between the songs, and it was all in German. There was a tiny booklet enclosed with the CD, but the print was so faint and the font so small, that I couldn't follow along. I got lost trying to follow along, and only was able to anchor myself when the melody to "Oh Sacred Head, Now Wounded" came up, which it does with great frequency in the cantata. Somewhere along the line, I lost that CD too.
But then, along came the COVID Lockdown. The Website "Great Courses" offered several College-Level Courses which I gobbled up, not for any kind of College Credit, but just to relieve the boredom of sitting around all day in Quarantine. Naturally I chose courses that appealed to me, and completed five of them. The one I liked best was about "Sacred Music" and they spent a lot of time on "St. Matthew's Passion".
Johann Sebastian Bach was the Music Director for FOUR (count 'em!) Churches for a few years. His duties included leading the choirs and orchestras, playing the organ, and composing fresh new music according to the Lutheran Calendar.
This led to the composition of over 250 Cantatas, or Musical Programs, where Bach wove his own music around the traditional Lutheran Hymns to form a "Set" that advanced the day's readings. These were usually 20 minutes long, and encourage congregational participation during the Hymns that they already knew by heart. The existing Hymns that got woven into the Cantata were called Canta Firma by Music Scholars, and kept the congregation involved. Nevertheless, Bach had trouble finding people with the musical "chops" to sing his music, and, with each new Cantata, had only a week to pull it all together. (And I thought I had it tough, trying to get Bikers to play the music I had written for church.)
It turns out that "Oh Sacred Head Now Wounded" was a "Canta Firma"! It had been written over a hundred years before Bach was even born, and was very familiar to the congregation. It gave the congregation an "anchor" to stay involved with the Narrative, as the piece is a lot longer than twenty minutes. It is over two hours long.
Matthew's Gospel now switches from the Words of Jesus to Narrative, and it is the beginning of what is called The Passion According to St. Matthew". It is the section of Scripture that became Bach's Masterpiece. Now,with the invention of the Internet, I am able to watch the whole thing, with English Subtitles, and I have a whole new appreciation of the work.
And I forgive Paul Simon. I guess he figured, like Bach did, that we already KNEW the Tune.

Psalm 129
A Song of Ascents.
1 ‘Often have they attacked me from my youth’
—let Israel now say—
2 ‘often have they attacked me from my youth,
yet they have not prevailed against me.
3 Those who plough ploughed on my back;
they made their furrows long.’
4 The Lord is righteous;
he has cut the cords of the wicked.
5 May all who hate Zion
be put to shame and turned back.
6 Let them be like the grass on the housetops
that withers before it grows up,
7 with which reapers do not fill their hands
or binders of sheaves their arms,
8 while those who pass by do not say,
‘The blessing of the Lord be upon you!
We bless you in the name of the Lord!’

Interesting musical history.
I also understand much of classical music came from the common tunes of the people, like jigs.
Joining in prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem and for our beloved America.

I also understand much of classical music came from the common tunes of the people, like jigs.
Liszt, Brahms, Rimsky-Korsakov, and many others used a lot of "Folk Melodies" from their own culture. It was a big thing in the Romantic Era, and was a way of showing National Pride.
