Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Matthew 22
The Greatest Commandment
34 Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. 35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”
37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’[c] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[d] 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

Psalm 144
Of David.
1 Blessed be the Lord, my rock,
who trains my hands for war, and my fingers for battle;
2 my rock* and my fortress,
my stronghold and my deliverer,
my shield, in whom I take refuge,
who subdues the peoples* under me.
3 O Lord, what are human beings that you regard them,
or mortals that you think of them?
4 They are like a breath;
their days are like a passing shadow.
5 Bow your heavens, O Lord, and come down;
touch the mountains so that they smoke.
6 Make the lightning flash and scatter them;
send out your arrows and rout them.
7 Stretch out your hand from on high;
set me free and rescue me from the mighty waters,
from the hand of aliens,
8 whose mouths speak lies,
and whose right hands are false.
9 I will sing a new song to you, O God;
upon a ten-stringed harp I will play to you,
10 the one who gives victory to kings,
who rescues his servant David.
11 Rescue me from the cruel sword,
and deliver me from the hand of aliens,
whose mouths speak lies,
and whose right hands are false.
12 May our sons in their youth
be like plants full grown,
our daughters like corner pillars,
cut for the building of a palace.
13 May our barns be filled
with produce of every kind;
may our sheep increase by thousands,
by tens of thousands in our fields,
14 and may our cattle be heavy with young.
May there be no breach in the walls,* no exile,
and no cry of distress in our streets.
15 Happy are the people to whom such blessings fall;
happy are the people whose God is the Lord.

First of All, I want to wish Everybody reading this a Very Happy, Healthy, and Prosperous New Year.
Now, for a couple of stories to say "Goodbye" to 2022.
1. The Oath: I am old enough to remember when aspiring medical students swore the Hippocratic Oath upon graduation. There are variations around, but most of them start out with a dedication to the Ancient Greek Gods of Healing. OK...so that is a little obsolete. But then we hear four little words that sum up the the entire motivation for going into medicine in the first place:
"FIRST, DO NO HARM."
That's kind of obvious. Who, in their right mind, would go to a doctor and pay big bucks to be harmed or be made more sick than they already are? Later on in the Oath, there is a prohibition against poisoning a patient, or performing an abortion. Oooops! It seems that the Ancient Greek Gods of Healing were "Pro-Life"! Who knew? And now there are actually doctors who prescribe drugs that will kill the patient on purpose (Canada's new "Assistance in Dying" protocols), and even even doctors who prescribe chemicals that will halt the natural development of children's bodies. So that pesky oath will have to go. I doubt if it has been recited by Medical Students since the 20th Century. If I am wrong, they may be reciting it, but they aren't living it.
Maybe Hippocrates is no longer in fashion because he was a White, Cis-Gender, Hetero-normative, European, Male. And, since he is usually pictured with a long white beard, he was probably a Senior Citizen as well. NOBODY listens to us White, Cis-gendered, Hetero-normative, European-Ancestors, Senior Citizens anymore! (even us FEMALE ones! LOL)
2. The Prime Directive: As a Senior Citizen, I am old enough to have been in on the Ground Floor when STAR TREK, The Original Series (TOS) made its debut. There I sat, in the TV Room which was originally a foyer, but large enough to accommodate a couch and a black-and-white TV. The series looked promising, and more like the "Hard Sci-Fi" that I liked, and I had been bitterly disappointed with "Lost in Space" (too goofy!). On that evening, I watched "Where No Man Has Gone" and LOVED it. The reviews the next day were horrible, citing the obviously skimpy costumes, trashy sets, and bad plot, but I was an instant fan. For a while, it seemed that the critics were right, as STAR TREK TOS ran only three seasons, and then languished in UHF Rerun-Land for many years. I remember watching it on a junky B & W set on a rolling wire cart in the kitchen of our first inner-city apartment in Jamaica Plain (now a $400,000.00 Condo). Star Trek is now a huge "enterprise" consisting of several TV Series, Movies, Internet Streams, Spin-off products, Clothing lines, and much, much more. Like the Hippocratic Oath, the STAR TREK"canon" seems to be a relic of a distant time that is still a part of our culture.
STAR TREK had its own "Hippocratic Oath". It was called "The Prime Directive." This was a doctrine to which all of Starfleet adhered to religiously. Since there is no actual text of The Prime Directive in the STAR TREK Canon, we will have to go with this entry from Wikipedia:
As the right of each sentient species to live in accordance with its normal cultural evolution is considered sacred, no Starfleet personnel may interfere with the normal and healthy development of alien life and culture. Such interference includes introducing superior knowledge, strength, or technology to a world whose society is incapable of handling such advantages wisely. Starfleet personnel may not violate this Prime Directive, even to save their lives and/or their ship, unless they are acting to right an earlier violation or an accidental contamination of said culture. This directive takes precedence over any and all other considerations, and carries with it the highest moral obligation....
Captain Kirk was always citing The Prime Directive, but he usually ended up violating it anyway, sometimes to the point of romancing females of an alien species. (In the later series, TNG, it was Commander William Riker who filled this dubious role.)
In any case, The Prime Directive was carried forth through all the iterations of STAR TREK, and is considered immutable to any who would want to write for the franchise.
3. The Greatest Commandment: We all know what The Ten Commandments are, but did you know that there are at least 613 Commandments in the Bible? Most of them were Ceremonial, but there were quite a few that governed Family Relations, Marriage, Land Ownership, Servitude, Government, Livestock, Food, and Sanitation. Some were commands on how to live a pure life when surrounded by a Pagan Culture. One of these was the command NOT to "boil a baby goat in its own mother's milk". Evidently there was some creepy Pagan Ceremony that did that very thing. Hence, the Commandment to Not Participate in that ceremony. But...what if you did it by accident? What if you decided to make a casserole with meat and cheese? What if the cheese came from the mother of the animal that was in the stew? Well, just stop mixing milk products and meat products together. But...what if there is a residue of meat on the dish when you use it for milk, and what if its the meat of the offspring of the mother who provided the milk? OK, use two different sets of dishes to avoid that situation. And so on. Rules followed other rules to help you in obeying the previous rules which were given by God.
The "What-ifs" formed the basis of reams of commentary and discussions. We do it to this day. It is the basis for nearly all Performance-based Religions. The Pharisees were no different from the devotee of an Eastern Religion who won't kill an insect, because it may contain the soul of an ancestor. So I am NOT picking on the Pharisees. They were just doing what religious people do. And so, they asked Jesus:
"What is the Greatest Commandment?"
Instead of adding more laws, or choosing among the 613 in the Torah, Jesus reduces the entire Torah and Prophets into their Essence:
‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’[c] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’
And that, my Friends, should be our Prime Directive.
Happy New Year!
Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.
"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)
God Bless America.
Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM! And for the Preservation of the Valiant Israeli Nation!

"The Sermon on the Mount" Cosimo Roselli (c. 1481-82) |
|
_ | | UT when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together.
Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, |
Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
This is the first and great commandment.
And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
