Matthew 22

Paying the Imperial Tax to Caesar

15 Then the Pharisees went out and laid plans to trap him in his words. 16 They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians. “Teacher,” they said, “we know that you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren’t swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are. 17 Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay the imperial tax[a] to Caesar or not?”

18 But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, “You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me? 19 Show me the coin used for paying the tax.” They brought him a denarius, 20 and he asked them, “Whose image is this? And whose inscription?”

21 “Caesar’s,” they replied.

Then he said to them, “So give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”

22 When they heard this, they were amazed. So they left him and went away.

Yesterday, I had an hour to spare. I decided to watch an old documentary from the good old days of the History Channel (before the UFOs and Treasure Hunting made their debut.) It was a WW2 Documentary about Mussolini, a character from that War whom I knew very little about. I made myself a cup of tea, turned on the closed captions, and began to watch. It was narrated by the late, great Charlton Heston. As Heston's mellifluous voice issued forth from my computer, I realized that I didn't need the closed captions at all. I understood every word. Had I been healed of my deafness? I believe that can and will happen eventually, but that wasn't what was happening yesterday. It was Charlton Heston's VOICE, warm, familiar, and strong. He pronounced every word, and even though I couldn't see his face or read his lips, I didn't have to struggle to hear him. I understand there is an audio Bible with Heston as the narrator. I'm going to look it up. Unfortunately, the documentaries that are NOT narrated by Heston still require the captions, which are computer generated and often wrong to the point of hilarity.

My hearing loss has been getting more and more annoying. Of course, the masks have made it worse, but I was beginning to notice that the way people speak to one another has also changed. here are some examples:

1. Low-Talking: On a Seinfeld Episode many years ago, this form of speech was called "Low-Talking" and was a reason for Jerry breaking up with a potential girlfriend (it was ALWAYS something!). Although a TV sit-com is no basis for spiritual guidance, this episode did bring light to a common problem. We Vocal Coaches call it "Vocal Fry" and it is represented by a low choking sound at the end of words and sentences that suggests intellectual boredom, sensuality, or something more sinister. It was a feature of Brittney Spears's singing, and is particularly annoying to me, as I can't understand what is being said. It sounds like mumbling to me, and I can't figure out if it's MY problem (hearing) or the speaker's problem (Low-Talking) Most of my students are Low-Talkers, and I have to ask them repeatedly to repeat themselves.

2. Up-Talking: This is a particularly annoying vocal affectation that makes every statement sound like an excited little question. It is most prevalent among Nursery School Teachers and Automated Answering devices that use a real person to make the recordings...which brings us to what is perhaps the most annoying of all:

3. The Computer Voice: This is a voice that is totally generated by a computer. Although it has been a staple in Automated Answering Devices for a few years now, it is showing up more and more on You Tube and other platforms. It sometimes has a clipped accent, which is either Fake British or Fake Asian. Many words are mispronounced, and the emphasis is often on the wrong syllable. Even with my hearing loss I can tell right away that it is not a real person.

Old-School actors like Charlton Heston learned their craft from the Stage. Every word, syllable, and phrase was important. Sometime, in the 60's and early 70's, the advent of the "Anti-Hero" in the movies introduced a form of speech that pre-dated Vocal Fry but encouraged it. Actors like James Dean and Marlon Brando "pioneered" this kind of speech. It is one of the reasons I stopped going to the movies, because I couldn't understand what was being said. That's why Charlton Heston's narration on such a miserable subject as Mussolini held me in rapt attention.

Jesus often spoke in Parables, but sometimes was much more direct. In this incident, the Pharisees and Herodians joined together in a rare alliance in order to trap Him. The Herodians accepted the fake king Herod that the Oppressive Roman Empire had forced upon the Jewish People. The Pharisees, on the other hand, were fiercely nationalistic and hated Rome. So these two totally opposed enemies asked Jesus a loaded question about the Roman Tax. We have already seen Jesus pay the Temple Tax, as it was ordained by God. How would He answer this question? If He said "Pay the Tax" He would be accused of Blasphemy by the Pharisees. If He said "Don't pay the Tax, the Herodians could accuse Him of Treason.

His answer was perfect, clear, and easily understood. No Low-Talking, Up-Talking, or Fake Voice about it.

"Render Unto Caesar that which is Caesar's,
And unto God what is God's."

No Closed Captions Necessary.

Ditto on trying to understand all of the words from television, etc. I truly believe, like the skill of handwriting, the skill of English speech has deteriorated emensely.

The lack of wise education and using proper english is definitely noticable everywhere. God save us.
