OAKLAND, Calif. (CNS) — Citing rising operating costs, declining enrollment and an increased need for institutional aid, officials at Holy Names University in Oakland said the school will close at the end of the academic year in May.
Efforts to partner with another institution to keep the 154-year-old university open were unsuccessful, said Steven Borg, chairman of the school’s board of trustees.
The school was founded by the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary.
“While we’ve had interest in long-term collaboration with potential partners, we do not have the type of interest that would sustain HNU in continuing to offer its own programs and services, so we are forced to make the difficult decision to close and designate a transfer institution in the best interest of our students,” Borg said in a Dec. 19 news release.
The university said “both COVID-19 and an economic downturn disproportionately impacted” its students.
Enrollment stood at 520 undergraduates and 423 graduate students during the fall semester. Meanwhile, a total of 449 students total are registered for the spring semester that starts in January, the school reported.
The university said it had formalized an agreement with Dominican University of California in San Rafael, north of San Francisco, to transfer academic programs after the spring semester pending approval from the appropriate accreditation agency.
“First and foremost, ensuring HNU students will be able to continue their academic path forward is our top priority. We are also doing everything in our power to support our faculty and staff during this period of uncertainty,” Borg said.

More colleges like this will close. We have a decline in our birth rate. Men are opting out of going to universities.
That a bummer. I know several people who attend Holy Names. It’s just up the road from me. Wonder what will be me of the property?
Sad. Holy Names has a beautiful campus. Sadly, the liberal ladies running the school in the 1980’s invited the heretic Matthew Fox to teach, stopped wearing religious uniforms, started doubling tuitions costs and failed to acknowledge the Lord as their school Principal. Same with Dominican School in San Rafael. Some say that 25% of US colleges will close soon. Very sad.
college kids today are different then 50 yrs ago.....they seemingly drink all weekend, don't study, aren't prepared and take 5 yrs to finish 4 yrs work.....
look at what they are producing.....valueless shallow syncophants....yes men one and all...
well I hope the latinos get their fair share of spots......I’ve given up on whites....
A Borg wasn’t able to assimilate with another college. Ironic.
We still see religious wearing their religious garb - at least once per year on the literature when the retirement fund for religious collection occurs.

I have never heard of either of these “Catholic” schools but as an adherent Catholic I am glad they are closing. It means their pool of potential students has seen what these schools really are, they don’t like what they see and they are going elsewhere.
U.S. News & World Report ranked HNU as the most diverse university in the West in 2013. This same year, Holy Names University earned the highest diversity index score of all the colleges and universities included in the magazine’s multiple diversity rankings.
