Matthew 21

The Parable of the Two Sons

28 “What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work today in the vineyard.’

29 “‘I will not,’ he answered, but later he changed his mind and went.

30 “Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He answered, ‘I will, sir,’ but he did not go.

31 “Which of the two did what his father wanted?”

“The first,” they answered.

Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you. 32 For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did. And even after you saw this, you did not repent and believe him.

Mini Skirts were all the rage. It seemed as though every girl in school was wearing one. Most of us had skinny legs and knobby knees, so they weren't really flattering, but it was the fashion of the day. In Boston, this meant a long ride on unheated buses and trains to get to school, which meant that Mini Skirts were impractical. The freezing wind on unprotected skin turned our legs red and sore, and had the added disadvantage of the ever-resourceful human body's tendency to build up protective fat on the exposed areas, causing an affliction called "Thunder Thighs". Today's sub-zero wind chill factors are nothing new. I remember them on the long trip to Dorchester on the Elevated Railway back in the early 60's.

My Mom, however, was not a slave to fashion. She would not let me leave the house unless my skirt came to just below my kneecaps, with warm Knee-Socks bridging the gap to my shoes. And so, I was properly attired for the quarter-mile trek to the bus stop.

At the bus stop, there was an abandoned dry cleaning store with a recessed doorway. Before the bus arrived, I would duck into the doorway, and, like Superman in his phone booth, I would roll down my nerdy knee socks, and roll UP my goofy long skirt so that I would fit in with the "In-Crowd".

And, to this day, 60 years later, I STILL have "Thunder Thighs". (SIGH). Mom...you were SO right! Why didn't I listen to you?

Today's story is another Kingdom Parable that singles out the ones who "talk the talk" but do not "walk the walk". As all of us have noticed in life a "Religious Facade" can often be the smoke screen that covers a dark and bitter soul. The worst are those are politicians who impose insurmountable laws upon others, while flouting those same laws themselves. They have a semblance of righteousness, but are ducking into a phone booth and switching over to their wicked selves when they think nobody is looking. And then there are the ones who say "Sure, Dad. Whatever you say," and then totally ignore their promise and go out and roll down their knee socks and roll up their skirts to fit in.

From the perspective of Jesus's Kingdom Parable, it would seem that The Father would prefer the difficult son who is outwardly rebellious, but deep down, ends up doing his Father's will after all. At least he's honest about it!
