Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Matthew 21

The Authority of Jesus Questioned

23 Jesus entered the temple courts, and, while he was teaching, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him. “By what authority are you doing these things?” they asked. “And who gave you this authority?”

24 Jesus replied, “I will also ask you one question. If you answer me, I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. 25 John’s baptism—where did it come from? Was it from heaven, or of human origin?”

They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Then why didn’t you believe him?’ 26 But if we say, ‘Of human origin’—we are afraid of the people, for they all hold that John was a prophet.”

27 So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.”

Then he said, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Our Father in Heaven

Hallowed be Your Most Holy Name!

How We Long For Your Kingdom,

How We Wait For Your Will to be Done,

Here on earth, as it already is, in Heaven!

You Are Our Peace,

Our Wholeness,

Our Shalom,

Our Security,

Our Prosperity,

and Our Future.

We are nothing without You.

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

God Bless America.

There is an elderly couple who attend Open Mike frequently. They are in their 80's, and probably were professional musicians at one time. He plays a decent guitar, and she has all the qualities of a Jazz Vocalist. She does songs from The American Songbook, and they are given much love and respect from the audience. They have obviously "paid their dues". However, they have a blind spot when it comes to modern songwriting. I got really blasted when I drew a comparison between Cole Porter and Steely Dan (Brilliant Melodies and Chords, somewhat bitter and sarcastic lyrics) and was hit with "What makes you people think you are SONGWRITERS?"I didn't know what to say., so I babbled on about lyrics, meter, rhyme, chord structure, and so on. I probably just should have answered the question with another one:

"Have YOU ever written a song?" and left it at that. Oh well. They ARE in their 80's after all. But Songwriting didn't stop short in the 1930's, even though it was a Golden Age.

When I was twenty-seven, I was given a New American Standard Bible by my good friend Skip. (Skip, I know you are reading this, and I want to say "THANK YOU! I still have that Bible.) I started reading the New Testament, starting naturally in Matthew. I remember sitting in the dining room reading, while my husband was in another room, taking apart a Texas Instruments computer. Back in the early days of home computers, we had no idea where they would lead, or that one day, I would be writing a daily devotional and sending it to people all over the country. Back then, it was useful for mailing labels on a strip with a Dot Matrix printer, but that was about it. If you wanted to read the Bible, you sat down and READ it.

Anyway, the NASB was easy reading compared to the KJV, so I was cruising along until I got to Today's Passage. Jesus's answer to the Pharisees made me LAUGH OUT LOUD. I called out to my husband and said, "You GOTTA Hear This!"

Then I read it to him using different voices for the Pharisees and Jesus. Then my husband laughed too. It was such a perfect response. Who knew that there was such humor in the Bible?

I am delighted that, as we go through Matthew, this particular Passage came up on Christmas Morning. After all, Jesus was from Nazareth, a town which we would probably call "Smallville" or "Podunk" nowadays. Not only that, He had been a Tradesman, a Carpenter, which, while respectable, did not qualify Him to teach or preach, especially in the Temple. Where were His credentials?

The Pharisees, of all people, should have known the Authority behind Jesus, as they were Great Scholars of the Hebrew Scriptures. Jesus , from the moment of His Conception by The Holy Spirit, was fulfilling these Scriptures right and left. Matthew, in his Gospel, quotes the Scriptures frequently, as if he is checking off boxes in Jesus's Resume. The Lineage of David, the Virgin Birth, the Birth in Bethlehem, the Return from Egypt, (and those are just the Prophecies fulfilled in he Christmas Story!) all were credentials. The ministry in Galilee was another, healing, teaching, and exorcisms, and so on John the Baptist's appearance as the Forerunner was another fulfillment. If anyone should have recognized the Authority of Jesus, it would have been the Pharisees. And yet, these men who had dedicated their lives to studying The Messiah didn't recognize Him when they saw Him face-to-face. Hence, the sarcasm that made me laugh out loud.

For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

Have a Blessed Christmas.

God Bless America.

Psalm 26

Of David.

1 Vindicate me, O Lord,
for I have walked in my integrity,
and I have trusted in the Lord without wavering.
2 Prove me, O Lord, and try me;
test my heart and mind.
3 For your steadfast love is before my eyes,
and I walk in faithfulness to you.*

4 I do not sit with the worthless,
nor do I consort with hypocrites;
5 I hate the company of evildoers,
and will not sit with the wicked.

6 I wash my hands in innocence,
and go around your altar, O Lord,
7 singing aloud a song of thanksgiving,
and telling all your wondrous deeds.

8 O Lord, I love the house in which you dwell,
and the place where your glory abides.
9 Do not sweep me away with sinners,
nor my life with the bloodthirsty,
10 those in whose hands are evil devices,
and whose right hands are full of bribes.

11 But as for me, I walk in my integrity;
redeem me, and be gracious to me.
12 My foot stands on level ground;
in the great congregation I will bless the Lord.

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR
THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM!
And for the Preservation of the Valiant
Israeli Nation!

_ when he was come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came unto him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority?

And Jesus answered and said unto them, I also will ask you one thing, which if ye
tell me, I in like wise will tell you by what authority I do these things.
The baptism of John, whence was it? from heaven, or of men? And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say unto us, Why did ye not then believe him?

But if we shall say, Of men; we fear the people; for all hold John as a prophet.

And they answered Jesus, and said, We cannot tell. And he said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.
