Matthew 21

Jesus at the Temple

12 Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves. 13 “It is written,” he said to them, “‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’[e] but you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’[f]”

14 The blind and the lame came to him at the temple, and he healed them. 15 But when the chief priests and the teachers of the law saw the wonderful things he did and the children shouting in the temple courts, “Hosanna to the Son of David,” they were indignant.

16 “Do you hear what these children are saying?” they asked him.

“Yes,” replied Jesus, “have you never read,

“‘From the lips of children and infants
    you, Lord, have called forth your praise’[g]?”

17 And he left them and went out of the city to Bethany, where he spent the night.

"You have GOT to try breakfast at 'CHUCK'S'", my sister gushed. "They have something called the 'Long Distance Trucker's Breakfast' which has FOUR slices of Bacon, FOUR sausages, a HUGE Omelet, Home Fries, Grits, and a Biscuit with Gravy for only nine dollars!"

That sounded like a plan, so we piled into the car and headed out into the pouring rain to experience this Breakfast Mecca.

It was still raining when we got there, and we knew it HAD to be good because the parking lot was filled with 18-Wheelers. I managed to squeeze the SUV between two huge trucks about a hundred yards from the entrance, and we braved the elements getting to the front door. On the door was posted a handwritten sign:

CASH ONLY
FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE, THERE IS AN ATM IN THE BACK.

"In the back" did not mean "in the back inside the restaurant". It meant behind the restaurant, outdoors. So we walked around in the rain and found the ATM. I put in my card and it said:

"THERE WILL BE A $3.75 SURCHARGE CHARGED TO YOUR ACCOUNT FOR THIS TRANSACTION"

That was outrageous, but I was getting hungrier by the minute. I agreed to the surcharge, and then the machine REJECTED my card. By this time, I was soaking wet, cashless, hungry, and furious, which is not a good place to be. We all got into the car and went somewhere else that took plastic. I probably could not have eaten the entire "Long Distance Trucker's Breakfast" even if I had tried.

Much has been written about the incident in Today's Reading. The four Gospels differ slightly with the story, and it is possible that Jesus cleansed the Temple on more than one occasion. It is important to know the context of the story, and how the Temple had gotten to the point where Jesus called it a "Den of Robbers".

From the Exodus onward, God was very specific about where He wanted the Worship and Sacrifice to take place. During the Desert Years, a Tabernacle was constructed according to God's specifications. There were also many rules about the Sacrifice as well. The victim animal had to be of a certain species, sex, age, and, most of all, purity. There was to be no blemish or disability. A "Sacrifice" was not to be like donating old clothes to the Thrift Shop because you don't need them anymore. A sacrifice that doesn't cost the giver anything is not a sacrifice at all.

When your flocks and herds are grazing all around you, it's easy to pick out a good one for the ritual. But, when you live in the city, or come from far away, there has to be a way to purchase an "pre-approved" animal in the Temple Precinct. So far, so good. There is nothing wrong with providing this service to traveling pilgrims.

So, you get to Jerusalem with a pocket full of cash, from Asia Minor, Greece, Rome, Persia, or wherever. The cash in your pocket is also from Asia Minor, Greece, Rome, Persia, or wherever. To buy an animal fit for a Sacrificial Offering (pre-approved!), you have to change your money into the Shekel of the Sanctuary. But! No Worries. There are Moneychangers right in the outer court of the Temple, who will very happily change your cash for you. For a Fee, Of Course! Well, why not? Everybody's got to make a living the best they can.

Unfortunately though, these Moneychangers were like the "ATM out back" who charged a ridiculous fee for their service and probably were not delivering what was promised. The Sacred Precincts were a cacophony of animals bleating and howling, people haggling over prices, and general craziness. What had started out as a helpful service had become a ZOO.

In one of the Gospels, Jesus actually makes a Whip out of cords and chases everybody out.

Some disgruntled Truck Driver must have taken a whip to Chucks because they NOW take Plastic.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.
