Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Matthew 20

A Mother’s Request

20 Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons came to Jesus with her sons and, kneeling down, asked a favor of him.

21 “What is it you want?” he asked.

She said, “Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom.”

22 “You don’t know what you are asking,” Jesus said to them. “Can you drink the cup I am going to drink?”

“We can,” they answered.

23 Jesus said to them, “You will indeed drink from my cup, but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared by my Father.”

24 When the ten heard about this, they were indignant with the two brothers. 25 Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 26 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— 28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Our Father in Heaven,

How Blessed is Your Name.

Thank You For Your Many Blessings.

Please Send Us Conviction When We Stray.

Guard Our Hearts and Our Minds From Laziness.

Give Us A Clear Conscience and a Pure Heart Before You.

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

God Bless America.

What did my Annual Student Recitals have in common with the Super Bowl? It was simply this: Every year we would open the Recital with the National Anthem, and every year it would be a different student who would have the honor. A Piano Student might play it one year, and a Vocal Student might sing it another year. A Guitar Student did it "his way" one year which, though not as wild as the Jimi Hendrix version, was quite impressive. When the "Moms" caught onto the pattern of the recitals, some of them started lobbying for their kid to be the Anthem-Singer.

At this point I found myself in a bind...how to I keep the parents happy, showcase the right child for the job, and give proper respect to the National Anthem at the same time. One girl was perfect, but she had already done it last year, and she was singing the Anthem at College Football Games already. It had to be somebody else.

One mom was pushing for her twelve-year old son, who was proficient on a number of instruments, to be that year's singer. I worked with him, but something weird happened that occurs with all little boys when they reach a certain age. His VOICE started changing! YIKES! And there was only a week to go.

Over in the corner of the living room, I saw a case that looked the same size and shape of a Tenor Sax. (I knew the shape because my husband played Sax.)

"Is that a Tenor Sax? I asked.

"Oh yeah. I play it in school." He replied.

I asked if he could play the Star Spangled Banner, which, of course, he could, because he played in the School Band.

"OK, so PLAY IT!" I said.

Once he started, I figured out that he was in Bb, and I began to play chords on the piano. It sounded great and he did a wonderful job at the Recital. I told him NOT to embellish the tune with any Jazzy stuff, except in ONE place (the measure after "Land of the Free" near the very end.) He stuck to the script, and when that moment came up, he just did a little bluesy turn of the phrase, and the audience applauded.

Stage Moms are nothing new. Jesus encountered one and the incident is recorded for us here in the Book of Matthew. Her request was far more serious than who was going to sing the National Anthem. She wanted her two sons to sit on Jesus' right and left when He ruled His Kingdom. Talk about chutzpah!

Jesus could have just answered that it was not for Him to say. But He also gave a hint that it wasn't going to be easy for Believers. There would be persecution, torture, and martyrdom ahead for those who would place their faith in Christ.

All Mrs. Zebedee earned from her meddling was the resentment of the other Disciples. It wasn't a good look for James and John either.

Jesus had nicknamed these two as "The Sons of Thunder". Could it be that maybe he was referring to their Stage Mom?

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

God Bless America.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen

Psalm 68

To the leader. Of David. A Psalm. A Song.

1 Let God rise up, let his enemies be scattered;
let those who hate him flee before him.
2 As smoke is driven away, so drive them away;
as wax melts before the fire,
let the wicked perish before God.
3 But let the righteous be joyful;
let them exult before God;
let them be jubilant with joy.

4 Sing to God, sing praises to his name;
lift up a song to him who rides upon the clouds*—
his name is the Lord—
be exultant before him.

5 Father of orphans and protector of widows
is God in his holy habitation.
6 God gives the desolate a home to live in;
he leads out the prisoners to prosperity,
but the rebellious live in a parched land.

7 O God, when you went out before your people,
when you marched through the wilderness,
Selah
8 the earth quaked, the heavens poured down rain
at the presence of God, the God of Sinai,
at the presence of God, the God of Israel.
9 Rain in abundance, O God, you showered abroad;
you restored your heritage when it languished;
10 your flock found a dwelling in it;
in your goodness, O God, you provided for the needy.

11 The Lord gives the command;
great is the company of those* who bore the tidings:
12 ‘The kings of the armies, they flee, they flee!’
The women at home divide the spoil,
13 though they stay among the sheepfolds—
the wings of a dove covered with silver,
its pinions with green gold.
14 When the Almighty* scattered kings there,
snow fell on Zalmon.

15 O mighty mountain, mountain of Bashan;
O many-peaked mountain, mountain of Bashan!
16 Why do you look with envy, O many-peaked mountain,
at the mount that God desired for his abode,
where the Lord will reside for ever?

17 With mighty chariotry, twice ten thousand,
thousands upon thousands,
the Lord came from Sinai into the holy place.*
18 You ascended the high mount,
leading captives in your train
and receiving gifts from people,
even from those who rebel against the Lord God’s abiding there.
19 Blessed be the Lord,
who daily bears us up;
God is our salvation.
Selah
20 Our God is a God of salvation,
and to God, the Lord, belongs escape from death.

21 But God will shatter the heads of his enemies,
the hairy crown of those who walk in their guilty ways.
22 The Lord said,
‘I will bring them back from Bashan,
I will bring them back from the depths of the sea,
23 so that you may bathe* your feet in blood,
so that the tongues of your dogs may have their share from the foe.’

24 Your solemn processions are seen,* O God,
the processions of my God, my King, into the sanctuary—
25 the singers in front, the musicians last,
between them girls playing tambourines:
26 ‘Bless God in the great congregation,
the Lord, O you who are of Israel’s fountain!’
27 There is Benjamin, the least of them, in the lead,
the princes of Judah in a body,
the princes of Zebulun, the princes of Naphtali.

28 Summon your might, O God;
show your strength, O God, as you have done for us before.
29 Because of your temple at Jerusalem
kings bear gifts to you.
30 Rebuke the wild animals that live among the reeds,
the herd of bulls with the calves of the peoples.
Trample* under foot those who lust after tribute;
scatter the peoples who delight in war.*
31 Let bronze be brought from Egypt;
let Ethiopia* hasten to stretch out its hands to God.

32 Sing to God, O kingdoms of the earth;
sing praises to the Lord,
Selah
33 O rider in the heavens, the ancient heavens;
listen, he sends out his voice, his mighty voice.
34 Ascribe power to God,
whose majesty is over Israel;
and whose power is in the skies.
35 Awesome is God in his* sanctuary,
the God of Israel;
he gives power and strength to his people.

Blessed be God!

I noted it was OK for the mother to ask. And the others were made because they wanted those spots, too. But as always, Jesus gave excellent advice.

Joining in prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem and for our beloved America.

I love how you have touched so many lives with music. It is a lost art these days. I have noticed many kids getting indignant with even the thought of having to practice. When I was in grade school, we had practice cards. 30 or 60 minutes every day with a parent signature at the end of the week. Needless to say, our band always received first superiors at the contests. Times have certainly changed in our rural area school district.
