Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Matthew 20
Jesus Predicts His Death a Third Time
17 Now Jesus was going up to Jerusalem. On the way, he took the Twelve aside and said to them, 18 “We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death 19 and will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified. On the third day he will be raised to life!”

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Oh LORD,
Our God,
How Wonderful,
How Majestic,
How Excellent is Your Most Holy Name!
Our Hearts overflow with praise and Wonder at Your Glory,
You Alone Are Worthy of Our Love and Adoration,
You Alone Are Worthy Of Worship,
For You Alone Are The Omnipotent,
Eternal and Omniscient,
Everlasting and Almighty God!
Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.
Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.
This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.
God Bless America.

Psalm 102
A prayer of one afflicted, when faint and pleading before the Lord.
1 Hear my prayer, O Lord;
let my cry come to you.
2 Do not hide your face from me
on the day of my distress.
Incline your ear to me;
answer me speedily on the day when I call.
3 For my days pass away like smoke,
and my bones burn like a furnace.
4 My heart is stricken and withered like grass;
I am too wasted to eat my bread.
5 Because of my loud groaning
my bones cling to my skin.
6 I am like an owl of the wilderness,
like a little owl of the waste places.
7 I lie awake;
I am like a lonely bird on the housetop.
8 All day long my enemies taunt me;
those who deride me use my name for a curse.
9 For I eat ashes like bread,
and mingle tears with my drink,
10 because of your indignation and anger;
for you have lifted me up and thrown me aside.
11 My days are like an evening shadow;
I wither away like grass.
12 But you, O Lord, are enthroned for ever;
your name endures to all generations.
13 You will rise up and have compassion on Zion,
for it is time to favour it;
the appointed time has come.
14 For your servants hold its stones dear,
and have pity on its dust.
15 The nations will fear the name of the Lord,
and all the kings of the earth your glory.
16 For the Lord will build up Zion;
he will appear in his glory.
17 He will regard the prayer of the destitute,
and will not despise their prayer.
18 Let this be recorded for a generation to come,
so that a people yet unborn may praise the Lord:
19 that he looked down from his holy height,
from heaven the Lord looked at the earth,
20 to hear the groans of the prisoners,
to set free those who were doomed to die;
21 so that the name of the Lord may be declared in Zion,
and his praise in Jerusalem,
22 when peoples gather together,
and kingdoms, to worship the Lord.
23 He has broken my strength in mid-course;
he has shortened my days.
24 ‘O my God,’ I say, ‘do not take me away
at the mid-point of my life,
you whose years endure
throughout all generations.’
25 Long ago you laid the foundation of the earth,
and the heavens are the work of your hands.
26 They will perish, but you endure;
they will all wear out like a garment.
You change them like clothing, and they pass away;
27 but you are the same, and your years have no end.
28 The children of your servants shall live secure;
their offspring shall be established in your presence.

D. and I both got Guitars for Christmas. The only instruction book available at the time was an outdated 30's edition with fuzzy photos of a man in a tuxedo playing Spanish Guitar. We learned a few chords, and were able to play along with Joan Baez and Bob Dylan, as long as their songs were in the Keys of G, C, or Am. There, our knowledge stopped short. We figured out that if we clamped a device called a capo onto the neck, we could play in other keys using our same chord forms that we already knew. However, as the clamp went higher and higher up the neck, the sound grew tinny and unsatisfactory. The capo was a quick fix, but we needed to learn more chords.
Through trial and error, we determined that many of the songs we wanted to sing were in the Key of E. The three chords we would need to play in that key were E, A, and B7. In 1964, we switched from Baez and Dylan and tried to figure out the songs of the Beatles. Some of these had five or six chords in them! Many of the songs we wanted to play were in E. Chord Charts for these songs were unavailable at the time, so we just played the '45' over and over and tried to match the chords to the melody. We figured out the E Chord, and the A Chord, but neither of us knew how to make the B7. Finally, D. and I swallowed our pride and asked her Mom, who was a folk singer. She showed us the B7 chord, and, unlike every other chord that we knew, it used ALL FOUR FINGERS. It was a lovely chord, and could turn easily into a 9th Chord and go all the way up the neck. That meant we had jumped from "Folk" to "Jazz"!
A half century later, I was trying to find an online video with instructions on how to play "Blackbird" by the Beatles. This exquisite little song has an unmistakable finger-picking that is the trademark of the song. It can't be played any way but the REAL way because everybody knows how it goes...NO CHEATING. Anyway, in my search, I came across an interview with Paul McCartney, and decided to watch it. It was quite fascinating.
Paul reminisced about the early days, when he and John sat in his bedroom in Liverpool and taught each other guitar, just like D. and me. He described the hit-or-miss learning process, how there weren't any proper instruction books available at the time, and how they had to try different keys to match the voices on their old "78"s. There was one chord they couldn't seem to get. John had learned how a schoolmate had learned this particular chord, but he lived all the way across town. Well, that settled it. Paul and John grabbed their guitars, and got on the public bus. They had to change buses a couple of times, but they finally arrived at the schoolmate's house, learned the chord, and then took all the buses back. The chord was a B7.
I finally did learn "Blackbird", from a video on my computer, butit's really hard to play and sing it at the same time. Perhaps if I keep practicing, I may be able to present it sometime.
Both the Beatles and my Childhood Friend and I share an experience. That is, we all had to search for an elusive truth, and not give up until we found it. If it involved humbling ourselves to ask a parent, or riding buses around post-war Liverpool, our shared experience mirrored the Kingdom Parables that Jesus shared with His Disciples. The B7 Chord was like a Treasure Hidden in a Field, or like a Pearl of Great Value. It was worth the trouble, and transformed our guitar playing.
And yet, there was one great Truth that the Disciples had a really hard time getting. It was that their Beloved Teacher was going to have to die for the sins of the world. That was a concept that was too horrible to imagine. Jesus had already explained this twice before, and it still was too much. He even Transfigured Himself before them, showing that He was the Fulfillment of both the Law and the Prophets. He did Great Miracles of Healing, fed the Multitudes (more than once!) and taught with authority. He even defied Nature by Walking on Water and Calming the Storm.
In Today's Reading, Jesus tells them a THIRD Time.
Although no response from the Disciples is recorded here, we still get the impression that it didn't sink in, from their subsequent behavior when Jesus is arrested. It wouldn't be until the Day of Pentecost that they finally "get it".

And the majority of humanity still doesn’t “get it”, and they never will. But praise be to God for the minority who do “get it”.
Being one of those few enables me to pray and be confident of being heard, and so I do, finishing with an assured AMEN!

The disciples didn’t get it, till it happened and they looked back. I think Mary of Bethany got it as she anointed Jesus with her expensive perfume before the Last Supper and Judas criticized her for that.
