Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Matthew 19

The Rich and the Kingdom of God

16 Just then a man came up to Jesus and asked, “Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?”

17 “Why do you ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, keep the commandments.”

18 “Which ones?” he inquired.

Jesus replied, “‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, 19 honor your father and mother,’[c] and ‘love your neighbor as yourself.’[d]”

20 “All these I have kept,” the young man said. “What do I still lack?”

21 Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

22 When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.

23 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”

25 When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, “Who then can be saved?”

26 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

27 Peter answered him, “We have left everything to follow you! What then will there be for us?”

28 Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife[e] or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life. 30 But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Bless the LORD,

Oh My Soul,

and let All That is Within Me Bless His Most Holy Name!

Abba, Father,

We Praise and Worship You.

You Alone Are Worthy of Worship and Praise,

For You Alone Are The One True God,

As the Nations Rage So Furiously Against You,

And Against Your People,

We Know That You Are Our Shelter,

Our Strength and our Song,

Our Refuge in Times of Trouble,

Our Rock and Our Redeemer!

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

God Bless America.

Was not that correctly translated “Why do you call me good?”

Is truth good?

Legend has it that The Eye of the needle" was a very narrow gate into Jerusalem. In order to get a camel through that gate, one had to remove its pack, with all its merchandize, push the camel through, and reload it again on the other side.

The following is a true story, and the people involved are probably still alive, so I will change a lot of details. I can't help myself! Every time I read this Passsage of Scripture, it reminds me of this incident.

A certain man, let's call him Jack, made a lot of cash selling marijuana and cocaine. He was not a street-level dealer, but had regular "clients" in middle-class suburbia. The money he made needed to be "laundered", so Jack bought up several distressed multi-family residences and renovated them, then marketed them to Section 8 tenants, so that he would be guaranteed his rent by the State. Then he stopped dealing drugs and settled into the life of an Inner-City Landlord.

Somewhere along the line, he came to faith in Jesus and claimed he was Born Again. Because he was young, handsome, and wealthy, he quickly became a presence in a struggling urban church. His dynamic personality, and generous contributions to the little church propelled him through the ranks, and he became a Sunday School Teacher, a Deacon, and an Elder in rapid succession.

The overburdened Pastor asked Jack to preach one Sunday Morning, and the Passage was to be the one we read today, about the Rich Young Ruler. Those of us who knew Jack's History, were filled with anticipation as to how Jack would "spin" this story.

It started out wonderfully. Jack confessed tearfully about how he had attained his wealth. He begged forgiveness from the congregation, and vowed he would never be involved in Drug Dealing again. But, as for the properties...well, he was providing decent housing for the POOR! How could he sell the properties when they might be purchased by a Developer, and all those POOR people would be out on the street! He couldn't pull the rug out from under the POOR. And so on. Then Jack said that everybody is different, and just because Jesus told the Rich Young Ruler to sell everything he had, that was right for HIM, but maybe not right for everyone else. "God has to deal with each or us individually," he said.

The congregation nodded in agreement, and there were some "Amens", but I was squirming in my seat. Everything he said seemed to make sense, but it wasn't right. I haven't seen or heard from anybody from that particular day in over 40 years, so I have no idea what happened afterward. Jack may still be an Inner-City Landlord, or maybe he eventually did sell everything and give all the money to the POOR. Since his initial wealth had come illegally, and the subsequent rental income came from the Taxpayers, it was never really his to begin with.

Jack was right about one thing. God does deal with us each individually. However, God's Precepts do not change. They are the same forever (See Psalm 119). What was said to the Rich Young Ruler was right for him, but also applicable to us all. Only when one lets go of all that encumbers him, can he squeeze through the "Eye of the Needle", which is the Narrow Path of Salvation. No amount of rationalization, moral equivalency, or situational ethics can change that.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

God Bless America.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen

Truth is Good.

Jesus was engaging the Rich Young Ruler in some very challenging conversation.

And, it was indeed challenging, as you have joined in with a question about the translation. That’s what makes the words of Jesus so compelling.

He makes us THINK! :-)

Thanks for joining us today.

I share the excitement of the road.

Thank you for your kind wishes. Do you also ride a motorcycle? A lot of my stories come from my 50 years of riding. The road has indeed been EXCITING.

Merry Christmas! :-)

I’ve also heard it said—we’re either moving toward our treasure (in heaven) or away from our treasure (on earth)
