Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Matthew 19
Divorce
19 When Jesus had finished saying these things, he left Galilee and went into the region of Judea to the other side of the Jordan. 2 Large crowds followed him, and he healed them there.
3 Some Pharisees came to him to test him. They asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?”
4 “Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’[a] 5 and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’[b]? 6 So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”
7 “Why then,” they asked, “did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?”
8 Jesus replied, “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. 9 I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.”
10 The disciples said to him, “If this is the situation between a husband and wife, it is better not to marry.”
11 Jesus replied, “Not everyone can accept this word, but only those to whom it has been given. 12 For there are eunuchs who were born that way, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by others—and there are those who choose to live like eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. The one who can accept this should accept it.”

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Dear Heavenly Father,
How Wonderful is Your Most Holy Name!
We Worship You,
And You Alone,
For You Alone Are LORD,
You Alone Are The Most HIGH!
You Alone Are The One,
Who Banishes Fear.
For If You Be With Us,
Who Can Possibly Stand Against Us?
Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.
Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.
This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.
God Bless America.

Joey is an aspiring songwriter. Although he is only eleven, he has a nice way with words, and because he is a big fan of the Beatles, the Eagles, and Buddy Holly, he has a good grasp of song structure and content. He just needs a little help with chords, so I help him, without messing too much with the lyrics or intent of his songs. He wrote a Christmas song that is also a love song, because he currently has a puppy-love crush on a girl in his class. The song doesn't name the girl, but certain lyrics pointed in her direction. She knew about the song, and thought it was cute.
Well, due to Social Media, his teacher found out about the song. Joey was marched off to the Principle's Office and was accused of "bullying" the little girl in question. According to Joey, the Principle even Shouted at him. The parents were called, and it became a big drama.
When Joey told me this, my heart went through the floor. I felt terrible! I would never, ever, want to do anything that would cause a child to be hurt...and I'll bet the School System exposes these children to a lot more than a song about puppy-love.
I am very sensitive about bullying, because I was bullied mercilessly all through 12 years of school. It didn't stop till I went to college. So I KNOW what bullying is, and this was not it. Even the little girl didn't think so. It's all about context.
And with that, we come to Today's Passage. They are the words of Jesus about Divorce. Even Christian women bristle at His words, and these were the words that my friend from China read, which caused her to stop reading, because they seemed so "harsh".
This passage has been used to argue for and against Marriage, Divorce, Remarriage, Celibacy, Monasticism, and Feminism. Yet, it is always argued out of context, with no regard for the customs and culture of the society.
The Ancient Middle east was not kind to women. A man could send his wife away (ie: kick her out) for the slightest infraction, even if he didn't like her cooking. This is what is meant by: for any reason". The great scholars Hillel and Shumai actually argued about this, and the bad cooking was used as an example of "any reason." Hence, a woman would be walking on eggshells all the time, in order not to be thrown out. Lest one thinks that the Ancient Hebrews were any kinder than the surrounding tribes, just look at the story of Hagar and Abraham. Hagar was thrown out because of the mocking behavior of her son Ishmael. Without any kind of compensation, and merely a skin of water, she was thrown out with her son. It was God alone who had mercy on her.
Jacob was no prize either. Deceived into marrying Leah, he lavished his love on Rachel. The rivalry between the two sisters continued on through their children. Jacob didn't send Leah away, but she had a miserable life.
This "Hardness of Heart" continued until Moses, the lawgiver, instituted a form of Divorce Papers to show that these women were no longer legally married. This protected the legal status of the woman, and also discouraged the man from just "throwing her out". If there was legal arbitration involved in getting the certificate, the man might consider that his wife's cooking was not so bad after all.
Nevertheless, there has been argument over this issue for centuries, between Hillel and Shumai, Jesus and His Disciples, Catholics and Protestants, and contemporary scholars. Of all these arguers, only ONE Person put the whole thing in Context. That was Jesus. By citing Moses, Jesus lifts the status of women and marriage, making it a little harder to dissolve a marriage than just saying "I Divorce Thee" three times in a row. Believe it or not, that is all that is necessary in some African and Middle Eastern Countries, where women are not treated with any respect, and have no legal status at all.
The irony is that some of those countries sit on Human Rights Committees in the UN. Go Figure.

Psalm 53
To the leader: according to Mahalath. A Maskil of David.
1 Fools say in their hearts, ‘There is no God.’
They are corrupt, they commit abominable acts;
there is no one who does good.
2 God looks down from heaven on humankind
to see if there are any who are wise,
who seek after God.
3 They have all fallen away, they are all alike perverse;
there is no one who does good,
no, not one.
4 Have they no knowledge, those evildoers,
who eat up my people as they eat bread,
and do not call upon God?
5 There they shall be in great terror,
in terror such as has not been.
For God will scatter the bones of the ungodly;*
they will be put to shame,* for God has rejected them.
6 O that deliverance for Israel would come from Zion!
When God restores the fortunes of his people,
Jacob will rejoice; Israel will be glad.
