Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Matthew 17
The Transfiguration
17 After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2 There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. 3 Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.
4 Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.”
5 While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!”
6 When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified. 7 But Jesus came and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.” 8 When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.
9 As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus instructed them, “Don’t tell anyone what you have seen, until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”
10 The disciples asked him, “Why then do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?”
11 Jesus replied, “To be sure, Elijah comes and will restore all things. 12 But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him everything they wished. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands.” 13 Then the disciples understood that he was talking to them about John the Baptist.

Just yesterday, I was doing some Christmas Shopping in a local Music Store. I had found some cool items and was waiting in line when I noticed that the Cashier was wearing some really awesome gloves. They were black leather, finger-less gloves with special padding in all the right places for riding a motorcycle. The full-color Harley-Davidson logo was tooled into the leather, and fairly screamed that this young man was a rider. Now, I have been on two wheels for over 50 years (that's half a century!) so I felt qualified to launch reflexively into "scooter-talk" with the cashier. I chattered about my 30-year-old Harley, my adventures on the road, certain issues with getting parts for an old bike, the joy of NOT being computerized like the newer bikes, etc. Then came the big question:
"So, what are YOU riding these days?"
(After all, I didn't want it to be all about ME.)
The young man hemmed and hawed, and looked down at his hands.
"Uh...I don't have a motorcycle. I don't ride."
I felt terrible! I had no intention of exposing this man to embarrassment. I felt like I had somehow "outed" him as a phony. I quickly changed the subject to MUSIC, and since it was a music store, he was able to converse with me on that.
It really wasn't my fault, as only a RIDER would wear gloves like that...well... apparently NOT. It's one thing to dress like a biker, and quite another to be a biker.
As we have seen in the reading of Matthew, "credentials" are very important. Matthew's frequent quotes from the Torah and the Prophets shows his depth of understanding of his own People, their longing for the Messiah, and their demand that He be "The Real Thing" and not just some phony. There were quite a few phonies around then, as there are now. As the Great Scholar Gamaliel said (and I paraphrase) The phonies will fade away and amount to nothing, but the Real Thing, you better not oppose, or you will find yourselves fighting against GOD".
Matthew provides credentials with Old-Testament citations, and Jesus provides His Own credentials with Wisdom, Healings, Deliverance, and incontestable Miracles. It is one thing to look like a messiah, it is quite another to BE The Messiah.
The three disciples that accompanied Jesus to the mountain may have been feeling a bit depressed. After walking with Jesus for over year, they had seen much evidence that Jesus was the Messiah. His public ministry was booming, and they were part of the "Inner Circle". But now He was talking privately with them about suffering and dying. This wasn't how it was supposed to go!
There are many schools of thought as to why Jesus took these three up the mountain. Perhaps it was to give the disciples a true picture of WHO Jesus was. The testimony of Moses and Elijah (The Torah and the Prophets) was there for them to see and hear. Then came the most compelling and awesome testimony of all, the Voice of Almighty God rending the heavens with:
"THIS IS MY BELOVED SON IN WHOM I AM WELL PLEASED.."
Now that's what I call "Credentials".
Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.
"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)
God Bless America.
Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Psalm 64
To the leader. A Psalm of David.
1 Hear my voice, O God, in my complaint;
preserve my life from the dread enemy.
2 Hide me from the secret plots of the wicked,
from the scheming of evildoers,
3 who whet their tongues like swords,
who aim bitter words like arrows,
4 shooting from ambush at the blameless;
they shoot suddenly and without fear.
5 They hold fast to their evil purpose;
they talk of laying snares secretly,
thinking, ‘Who can see us?*
6 Who can search out our crimes?*
We have thought out a cunningly conceived plot.’
For the human heart and mind are deep.
7 But God will shoot his arrow at them;
they will be wounded suddenly.
8 Because of their tongue he will bring them to ruin;*
all who see them will shake with horror.
9 Then everyone will fear;
they will tell what God has brought about,
and ponder what he has done.
10 Let the righteous rejoice in the Lord
and take refuge in him.
Let all the upright in heart glory.
