Russian Orthodox Church Slams Ukraine's Plans to Ban Ukrainian Orthodox Church

Moscow, December 2, Interfax - The Moscow Patriarchate considers the Ukrainian authorities' intention to ban Russia-linked religious organizations to be targeting the most vulnerable part of Ukraine's population.

"The Ukrainian leadership are prepared to act against their own population, and the most defenseless and unobjecting kind at that, the believers and the clergy of the largest and the only canonical Orthodox Church in Ukraine," Russian Orthodox Church spokesperson Vladimir Legoyda said on Telegram on Friday.

He was commenting on a decree by Ukraine's President Vladimir Zelensky, which would pave way for a total ban on the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC).

Not only does the bill encroach on the norms of law, it also indicates the "loss of remnants of common sense," given that the UOC has always supported its people and the Ukrainian state in every way it could, always calling for peace and praying for peace, Legoyda said.

Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council has decided that the bill should conform to international law in the sphere of the freedom of conscience and Ukraine's obligations as a member of the Council of Europe, he said.

"How this task will be implemented, if a breach of the freedom of conscience is the aim and essence of this bill, remains a mystery," Legoyda said, while worrying about "political games [using] as a bargain chip the innocent people - ordinary believers and the humble, honest priests of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, whose sole blame is their keeping the faith of their fathers," Legoyda said.

Presumably the Ukrainian Orthodox is being banned in Ukraine because it is not part of GloboHomo™.

Yep.

Europe will Europe.

They have state religions and when you are a member of the religion of another state you are going to have these kind of issues.

Putin and Kirill make such a cute couple! Making eyes at each other like lovestruck teenagers! Who said romance was dead?

Lame comment, but you don't see the big picture. Historically, states become great through confidence and faith. Secular and decadent societies, like those in the West, always fail and collapse.

So much for freedom of concience for the Eastern Orthodox Ukrainian Christians.

Well, fascists gotta fascist. I feel for Christians in Ukraine. For some, their trial will be severe.

“Secular and decadent societies, like those in the West, always fail and collapse.”

Russia is much more secular than us. Far more atheists, far more abortions, etc.

What thus will there fate be?

Russia is much more secular than us.

You're still stuck in the 1980s. The world is changing fast and you need to catch up. There's been a great revival of the Orthodox church in Russia since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, similar to Islam's renaissance after the Ottoman Empire collapsed in the 1920s.

Russia builds three churches per day. Thousands of protestant and catholic churches have shuttered in Germany in the past 20 years. The Church of England is on life support. The percentage of Americans identifying as Christians is at an all-time low.

You know your on the wrong side when you go after churches. They did it here is the USA when Covid fear gripped the nation and it was wrong. This move by Ukraine only shows their true nature.

You should look up Putin's history on churches.

I have no dog in this fight but trying to hold up one side as being on the side of light is not to look at all the evidence.

The title of the article is incorrect. The parliament is mulling a ban on the clergy that supports the Moscow patriarch. Namely the Russian Orthodox church in Ukraine.

There is no move to ban the Ukrainian Orthodox church, an autocephalous church since 2018.

The reason for the attempted ban is that the Moscow patriarch not only openly supports Putin’s war, he is deeply tied to Putin.

Technically Russia does nit have a state religion.

Sweden, denmark a d the UK do. Not other European countries. A d no, you don’t have issues being a Baptist or jehovah’s witnesses or Adventist in those countries
