Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Matthew 16

Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah

13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”

14 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”

16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you that you are Peter,[b] and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades[c] will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be[d] bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be[e] loosed in heaven.” 20 Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Oh LORD,

Our God,

How Holy is Your Name over All the Earth!

You Alone Are Worthy of Praise.

You Alone Are Holy,

Righteous, and Just,

The One True God of the Universe.

How Awesome You Are,

Sacred and Pure,

That The Angels Praise and Worship You

Day and Night Eternally!

Set Apart,

Distinct from Your Creation

Awesome and So Infinitely

Beyond our poor power to grasp

And Yet You Continue to reach Down and Touch us With your Word.

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

God Bless America.

Psalm 15

A Psalm of David.

1 O Lord, who may abide in your tent?
Who may dwell on your holy hill?

2 Those who walk blamelessly, and do what is right,
and speak the truth from their heart;
3 who do not slander with their tongue,
and do no evil to their friends,
nor take up a reproach against their neighbors;
4 in whose eyes the wicked are despised,
but who honor those who fear the Lord;
who stand by their oath even to their hurt;
5 who do not lend money at interest,
and do not take a bribe against the innocent.

Those who do these things shall never be moved.

Kathy Reichs is a forensic anthropologist who examines badly decomposed bodies for the police in order to identify the remains. She has written a series of books about a fictional woman names Temperance Brennan, who has the same job. These mystery novels usually have the word "BONES" in their titles, so they are easy to find in a bookstore. They are quite good, and I noticed my sister just finishing up one when I visited her in Maine. I commented that I liked the author and the series.

Sis replied that she did too, but was ambivalent about this particular book because it questioned the Death and Resurrection of Jesus. (The novel was cleverly titled "Cross Bones").

She thought I would find it interesting though, as much of the book takes place in Israel. She finished the book and I brought it home.

The book concerned itself with a real-life find of a skeleton at Masada. Because the skeleton was separate from the others, fully articulated, and left out of the official record, some people speculated that it was the body of Jesus. (A similar plot was used in the Antonio Banderas movie "The Body".)

Intrigued by a mismatched tooth and other anomalies, Brennan ends up in Israel, being pursued by rogue archaeologists, enraged Orthodox Jewish Zealots, angry Arabs, Israeli Officials, Christian Fundamentalists, and other nefarious types. She explores the West Bank, Jerusalem, the Hinnom Valley (otherwise known as "Hell"). She is in a car wreck, gets stones thrown at her, and is threatened with a gun. Everybody in the story has a different theory on the identity of the "body". That is where the connection to Today's Scripture Reading comes in. It was as if the bones were saying, "Who do you say I am?"

Thirty-eight years ago, I was in Caesaria Philippi with my tour group. I don't know if as many tour groups go there now because of its location, close to the Golan Heights, and in a contested area. I didn't do any shopping for souvenirs, but I did drink fresh water from a spring at the grotto there, and saved the paper cup for years. I have moved several times since, and the paper cup has long since disappeared from my possessions.

Two Thousand years ago, this was a controversial spot as well, and has been that way ever since. Different branches of Christianity are still arguing about the meaning of the words between Jesus and Peter, and it is not the purpose of this Thread to add to the argument. Rather than argue about that, let's look at the special moment of insight that Peter had when Jesus asked him the Eternal Question:

"WHO DO YOU SAY I AM?"

Peter, usually full of bluster and impulse, answered with a shining moment of insight.

"You are the Messiah, the Son of the Living God."

Peter's understanding was not complete, as we will see in tomorrow's reading. He still didn't realize the Theological significance of the Substitutionary Atonement, nor could he imagine that the Messiah would have to suffer and die for our sins. But, he got the answer to the Identity Question correct. And he didn't even have to analyze the DNA to prove his answer. It was purely by Faith.

God Bless America.

Didn’t know about the background about “Bones.”

Fascinating.

Only the Father reveals who He really is.

Joining in prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem and for our beloved America.
