Matthew 16

The Demand for a Sign

16 The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven.

2 He replied, “When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’ 3 and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.[a] 4 A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.” Jesus then left them and went away.

The Hawaiian Language was different than any language the Missionaries had ever encountered. It had lots of vowels and very few consonants. Words formed entirely of vowels flowed from the people's lips, and every word seemed to sound like every other. How on earth would the translators be able to interpret the Gospels into the People's own Language? Unlike Islam, which demands that the Koran is only intelligible when read in the original Arabic, Christianity asserts that the Message of Salvation is available to ALL People, of every Language and Dialect. St. Jerome believed that when he translated the Scriptures into Latin, which, at the time, was the language of the Common People. (That's why Latin is called "The Vulgate"). The Missionaries in Hawaii had their work cut out for them.

There was a feature of the Hawaiian Language that is quite interesting. In English, when we want to emphasize the comparative or superlative case, we have special endings, for example: dark-darker-darkest". This works most of the time, but if the form is too awkward, we have the words "more" and "most" to do the job for us. In Hawaiian, the comparative or superlative case is achieved by repeating the word. If "wiki" means "fast", then "wiki-wiki" means faster. Now, of course, "wiki" means an entirely new thing in our computerized world. But that is the origin of the name of the online encyclopedia that is supposed to supply you with answers quickly.

I don't know which Gospel was the first one translated into Hawaiian, but The Gospel of Matthew was a good candidate. Many of the stories in Matthew are explained more than once. This can either be because the stories were two separate incidents, or maybe Jesus wanted to make sure people were paying attention.

When teaching music, I often have to teach a concept more than once before it sinks in. In fact, I was taught "Every Good Boy Does Fine" hundreds of times before I understood it was speaking of the NOTES that appeared on those lines. Up till that point, I tried and tried, but couldn't read music, and had to write the note letters in, one at a time.

Jesus spoke in more detail about "The Sign of Jonah" back in Matthew 12. In retrospect, we can see that no matter how many times Jesus would say something, there would always be those who didn't get it. Even if Jesus told three or four Parables in a row, and then explained each one, there would be some who closed their hearts to the Message. That happens to us too. But, it should never discourage us from sharing it.
