Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Matthew 14

John the Baptist Beheaded

14 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus, 2 and he said to his attendants, “This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead! That is why miraculous powers are at work in him.”

3 Now Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, 4 for John had been saying to him: “It is not lawful for you to have her.” 5 Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of the people, because they considered John a prophet.

6 On Herod’s birthday the daughter of Herodias danced for the guests and pleased Herod so much 7 that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked. 8 Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.” 9 The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he ordered that her request be granted 10 and had John beheaded in the prison. 11 His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl, who carried it to her mother. 12 John’s disciples came and took his body and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus.

As children, we were exposed to Aesop's Fables. These little stories included talking animals and always concluded with a "Moral". The "Moral" explained the story and its practical application.

In Native American Tradition, there are what are called "Healing Stories". I have a book of these stories, as told by the MicMac People, who live in the Maritime Provinces of Canada. The stories often concern shape-shifting animals who can talk, and are, quite entertaining, but I struggle a bit with any practical application to my own life. I realize that, since most of the MicMac People I know are Christians, these stories are revered as Cultural Artifacts, like the Arts of Quillwork, Basketry, and Beading in which the MicMac excel.

Another type of parable comes to us in the form of the Zen Koans. I spoke of them in an earlier meditation. These are stories that do not give an answer, but leave the seeker to come to his own conclusions.

We are now embarking on a new section of the Book of Matthew. The Kingdom Parables were a lovely journey into the World of the Spiritual. Jesus used practical examples to teach His Disciples a Higher Truth. The Earthly was used to explain the Heavenly. The Practical was used to illustrate the Spiritual. The Natural became a guide to the Supernatural. Jesus used the Parables to teach the Unknown with the Familiar. They are BRILLIANT. I would love to keep on talking about the Parables for the rest of this Journey through Matthew.

But, Chapter 14 switches back into the Narrative, and we learn what happened with John the Baptist. He ended up in the king's prison for calling out sin. Lest you think this is a draconian measure from ancient times, bear in mind that there are Christian Pastors in Jail right now, in the 21st Century, for standing up for the Biblical definition of sin. What happened to John is not a parable. It is a true account.

An ironic parallel to today's culture is that John had called out Herod for taking his brother's wife while the brother was still alive. While it may not have been illegal to do this (Herod was, after all, the King, and could do whatever he wanted), it was against the Scriptures for him to do so. In other words, it was a sexual sin, even though it was perfectly legal. Lots of sexual sins are legal. Other things, like praying in school, are morally right, but are against the law. Some of the things that are going on right now, in the Medical Establishment, the Media, Academia, and the Government, are totally reprehensible and sinful, yet are within the "Law of the Land." Calling them out could land you, not only in Facebook Jail, but REAL Jail. Nevertheless, Truth is Truth, and sometimes we have to face persecution for speaking it. The Book of Revelation even says that, in the Last Days, people would be beheaded for their "Testimony".

The story of John the Baptist, while being the inspiration for dozens of gory paintings, operas, movies, and poetry, was not a "Parable", but a story from real life, and a warning for things to come.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

God Bless America.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Amen, left that other site

My husband made the suggestion that Herod could have offered John’s head on the silver platter with the head attached to the rest of his body—so he would still be alive. That would have fulfilled the request.

Joining in prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem and for our beloved America.

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH FOR
THE PEACE OF JERUSALEM!
And for the Preservation of the Valiant
Israeli Nation!

"Salomé Holding The Head Of
St. John The Baptist On A Platter"

Gustave Moreau – 1876

T that time Herod the tetrarch heard
__ of the fame of Jesus,

__ And said unto his servants, This is John
__ the Baptist; he is risen from the dead;
__ and therefore mighty works do shew
__ forth themselves in him.
For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife.

For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her.

And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.

But when Herod's birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod.

Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask.

And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist's head in a charger.

And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the oath's sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her.

And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison.

And his head was brought in a charger, and given to the damsel: and she brought it to her mother.

And his disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus.

Amen !!! <><

Psalm 25

Of David.

1 To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.
2 O my God, in you I trust;
do not let me be put to shame;
do not let my enemies exult over me.
3 Do not let those who wait for you be put to shame;
let them be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous.

4 Make me to know your ways, O Lord;
teach me your paths.
5 Lead me in your truth, and teach me,
for you are the God of my salvation;
for you I wait all day long.

6 Be mindful of your mercy, O Lord, and of your steadfast love,
for they have been from of old.
7 Do not remember the sins of my youth or my transgressions;
according to your steadfast love remember me,
for your goodness’ sake, O Lord!

8 Good and upright is the Lord;
therefore he instructs sinners in the way.
9 He leads the humble in what is right,
and teaches the humble his way.
10 All the paths of the Lord are steadfast love and faithfulness,
for those who keep his covenant and his decrees.

11 For your name’s sake, O Lord,
pardon my guilt, for it is great.
12 Who are they that fear the Lord?
He will teach them the way that they should choose.

13 They will abide in prosperity,
and their children shall possess the land.
14 The friendship of the Lord is for those who fear him,
and he makes his covenant known to them.
15 My eyes are ever towards the Lord,
for he will pluck my feet out of the net.

16 Turn to me and be gracious to me,
for I am lonely and afflicted.
17 Relieve the troubles of my heart,
and bring me* out of my distress.
18 Consider my affliction and my trouble,
and forgive all my sins.

19 Consider how many are my foes,
and with what violent hatred they hate me.
20 O guard my life, and deliver me;
do not let me be put to shame, for I take refuge in you.
21 May integrity and uprightness preserve me,
for I wait for you.

22 Redeem Israel, O God,
out of all its troubles.
