Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Matthew 12
Jesus and Beelzebul
22 Then they brought him a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute, and Jesus healed him, so that he could both talk and see. 23 All the people were astonished and said, “Could this be the Son of David?”
24 But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, “It is only by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons.”
25 Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand. 26 If Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then can his kingdom stand? 27 And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your people drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. 28 But if it is by the Spirit of God that I drive out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.
29 “Or again, how can anyone enter a strong man’s house and carry off his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man? Then he can plunder his house.
30 “Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters. 31 And so I tell you, every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. 32 Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.
33 “Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit. 34 You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. 35 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. 36 But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. 37 For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”

We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

Dad had the most eclectic tastes in music, from The Kingston Trio to Mahler, from Beethoven to Hank Williams, and some really weird favorites, including Bagpipes, Joe Cocker, and, the Red Army Chorus. Like I said: Eclectic. One of the more unusual records in his collection was called THE UNION. This was a collection of songs from The American Civil War, and had a matching record called THE CONFEDERACY. In each boxed set was the record, accompanied by a full-color folio of commentary, program notes, and authentic 100-year-old photographs of sad-eyed soldiers staring out at me. I couldn't get enough of those haunting pictures. The music on those records didn't appeal to me (I preferred The Beatles and The Doors), but those eyes of those boys (some as young as 12) never left me. When I grew up and got myself a Harley, I loved nothing more than ride down to Gettysburg from Boston and get up close and personal with those boys. My husband used to complain about the long ride, but he was on a big comfy bike and I was on a bone-rattling Sportster. And remember, the soldiers who had not been transported by train had WALKED to those Battlefields.
Anyway, the frontispiece for the UNION album had an interesting quote:
"A House Divided Against Itself Can Not Stand"...Abraham Lincoln
Seeing it emblazoned on the album as a Lincoln quote, I just figured that he had made it up. But, as you can see from Today's Scripture Reading, these were actually the words of Jesus.
While Lincoln used this to describe political divisions, Jesus was speaking of spiritual divisions, specifically, the spiritual realm of the prince of darkness. At this point in His Ministry, Jesus was being accused of using occult powers to cast out demons and heal people. (note that the Pharisees were using Alinsky Rule #5..."Accuse your opponent of doing who you yourself are guilty of") Of course, Jesus sees right through the tactic, and responds with this wonderful quote. It is perfect logic. Why would Satan cast himself out?
This reading also contains a controversial passage that has caused Christians unending debate and concern for centuries. What exactly, is "Blaspheming Against The Holy Spirit"? Whatever it is, you DON'T want to be caught doing it, because you will never be forgiven for it, in this world or the next. But, if you don't know what it is, how can you avoid doing it? Surely we would be provided with instructions on how to avoid the ONE UNFORGIVABLE SIN.
Here's where context comes in handy.
Jesus has just delivered a possessed man by casting out a demon. The Pharisees, who are learned scholars, and who should know better, accuse Jesus of casting the demons out by the power of Beelzebub (literally, the "lord of the flies"), who was not only a Pagan god but one of Satan's minions. This was literally attributing the Power of The Holy Spirit to the evil one, by people who knew better. They were intentionally and publicly making this false accusation, in defiance of their own knowledge, witness, and religion. This was not done in ignorance or by mistake.
It is right after this false accusation that Jesus speaks of "The Blasphemy Against The Holy Spirit", so the incident and the teaching are related. This leads to the conclusion that attributing the Good Power of God to the evil one, especially as a false accusation to discredit a Servant of God, is the one thing that will not be forgiven.
At least that's how I see it.
