Matthew 7

Judging Others

7 “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2 For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

3 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 4 How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

Most of us have heard of Saul Alinsky's "Rules For Radicals", but many of us do not know what they are exactly. Activists on the left, however, study them very intently, and it is rumored that Hillary Rodham Clinton did her Senior Thesis on the book at Wellesley College. I can't prove that, however, because HRC's Senior Thesis is nowhere to be found. And so, it is, I guess, just a rumor, right?

Since all of the tactics are used on you and me from time to time, perhaps we should take a look at them. One of the most interesting one is #4:

RULE 4: “Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules.” If the rule is that every letter gets a reply, send 30,000 letters. You can kill them with this because no one can possibly obey all of their own rules. (This is a serious rule. The besieged entity’s very credibility and reputation is at stake, because if activists catch it lying or not living up to its commitments, they can continue to chip away at the damage.)

Now, I am not suggesting that you use these mean-spirited tactics on anyone. I am just making you aware of them when they are being used against YOU.

Today's Scripture Reading has been coopted by Alinski-type radicals more times than I can count. The standard "Judge Not" line from the mouth of an unbeliever stops a Christian in her path when she is trying to right a wrong, call out sin, or even share the Good News of the Gospel. This is because The GOOD NEWS comes after the BAD NEWS that we are all sinners. If that isn't expressed properly, we come across as "Judging", and out comes the verse from the mouth of someone who doesn't even believe in it!

The big problem is that WE believe in it, and being called out to obey our own "rules" stops us dead in our tracks. Sometimes, the more educated Alinskyite will go further, and speak of the mote in our brother's eye and the beam in our own (YIKES). But they usually STOP there, because the next verse is quite damning. Perhaps if all we did was finish the quote for them, it would wrap up this little Struggle Session:

6 “Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces."

While this may seem pretty harsh, it does describe the situation. An unbeliever is using the Word of God to attack a Believer in The Word of God. All you are doing is putting it in context! In effect, when an unbeliever misquotes the Word, or tries to use the Fourth Rule against a Child of God, they are actually breaking one of their OWN Rules, Number 2:

RULE 2: “Never go outside the expertise of your people.” It results in confusion, fear, and retreat. Feeling secure adds to the backbone of anyone. (Organizations under attack wonder why radicals don’t address the “real” issues. This is why. They avoid things with which they have no knowledge.)

The Alinskyite doesn't know the Word of God. He has not studied it, nor has he hidden it in his heart. He has no interest in your "GOOD NEWS". He is using the Precious Holy Words of Jesus as a cheap weapon. He is, in fact, trampling Pearls under his little trotters.

The Word of God is a Two-Edged Sword and is a excellent weapon when weilded in The Holy Spirit. When our enemy is a spiritual one, we need to use Spiritual tactics and weapons to win. We need to put on the Whole Armor of God, and speak The Word with knowledge and love. Our judgement should be true and righteous, and the same way we would want to be judged. We also need to examine our own motives before judging and correcting others. "Remove the beam and THEN judge", is what Jesus said, not "Don't judge at all.".
