Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Matthew 6

Prayer

5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

9 “This, then, is how you should pray:

“‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10  your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
11  Give us today our daily bread.
12  And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13  And lead us not into temptation,[a]
but deliver us from the evil one.[b]’

14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Our Lord Our God

King of Kings,

And Lord of Lords!

You are The Forgiving God,

But You Will not leave the Unrepentant Evildoers Unpunished.

Your Justice and Holiness are Supreme.

And Yet, Your Lovingkindness is Everlasting.

Your Mercies Are New Every Morning.

You Alone are the One True Judge!

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

God Bless America.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

In the Cable Series "The Tudors", the story was told of England's King Henry VIII and his many wives. Although I wouldn't recommend it for people who are easily offended by gratuitous violence or bare bottoms, it was well-written and a very lush, gorgeous production. Remembering that the story took place long before the 1611 King James Bible, I was puzzled by one scene that caused me even more consternation than the aforementioned "Sax and Violins". The scene took place long after Henry's split with the Vatican and the execution of Anne Boleyn. Henry's parade of wives was the result of him desiring a male heir (Never mind that the three greatest and best-loved Monarchs in British History were all Women, but I digress!). Anyway, Wife #3, Jane Seymour, had just given birth to a male child after a very difficult and dangerous pregnancy and birth. Henry was elated! But poor Jane succumbed to a common affiction at the time, a post-birth infection, leaving the poor babe motherless and Henry bereft.

Now the next part may be actual History, or Pure Hollywood. I don't know. My research on it has been inconclusive.

Henry, in deep mourning, sequesters himself in his apartment in the palace, alone with his books. He neglects his family and his Nation, as he studies and ponders and sulks. He was now head of The Church in England, and could read Latin and Greek, so he was most likely reading the Gospels and other devotional Books. His neglect of his duties became intolerable, so The Archbishop, who was also his friend and mentor, confronts Henry in his chambers and basically tells him that the "Break" is over and it's time to get back to work. The two of them struggle a while, talk Theology and Philosophy, and suddenly Henry comes up with a new "Project" that will divert him from his abject mourning. Since he is now the Head of his Church, Henry decides to ADD something to The Lord's Prayer in Matthew 6. Supposedly, from the writers of the series, the Doxology at the end of the Lord's Prayer (For Thine is the Kingdom...") was officially added to text of the Prayer at this point in time. The writers did not indicate whether the Doxology was actually in their "Received Text" of Matthew, or if Henry created it out of thin air. Nevertheless, people were quite annoyed with changing the wording of their Beloved Lord's Prayer, just as many Catholics were annoyed with Pope Francis when he decided to change some words around a few years ago.

When the King James came out in 1611, the words of the Doxology were right there in the received text, so they were dutifully translated into King James English. Since the 17th century, many Greek texts have been discovered, and some them have the Doxology, and some of them don't. My theory is that it WAS in the original, because it's easier to miss something while copying a text than it is to add something.

There is nothing theologically wrong with the Doxology, and it makes a nice ending to the Prayer. But it bothered me at the time that it could have been added to The Lord's Prayer by Henry VIII, who was not a very nice person, to say the least.

In the NIV, which is the Translation we are using for this series, the Doxology is not included. There is a footnote, but that is all. And so, the Lord's Prayer goes right into a teaching about unforgivenness. Jesus will elaborate further upon this in the Parable of the Unforgiving Servant, which we will get to in a few days. It's Strong Stuff.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

God Bless America.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Most people recite the version of The Lord’s Prayer they were taught as children, no matter where they are with the Lord now.

And that’s OK, as it can be a pattern of prayer rather than a “recitation”.
