Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Matthew 6
Prayer
5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
9 “This, then, is how you should pray:
“‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation,[a]
but deliver us from the evil one.[b]’
14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

but deliver us from the evil one.’
The 7th Petition in the Lord's Prayer is very closely related to the 6th. It's the conjuction "but" that ties them together.
"Lead us not into temptation, BUT deliver us from evil"
It is one sentence, with two requests. Some translations, like the NIV, say "Deliver us from the evil one." That is powerful, because it gives a face to evil, and personifies it. We call that evil personage "Satan" or "The Devil". The name "Satan" comes from the Aramaic "Shaitan", meaning "The Adversary". "The Adversary is the enemy of God, and, by extension, the enemy of All Creation.
The Adversary is also known as "The Accuser of the Brethren". This personification has a big role in the Book of Job, as Satan accuses Job again and again, and then delegates Job's alleged friends to keep on accusing Job right up until God intervenes and delivers Job from all his accusers.
The way God delivers Job may seem odd to us at first glance. Instead of defending Job against all of his adversaries, God demonstrates His Omnipotence. the accusers shrink away, and even Job is chastised. The chastening, though, is good, because it causes Job to be so awed by God's Perfection and Glory that he can't find it in himself to complain about anything. God then restores Job to his former health, wealth, and position, but it is an act of pure Grace on God's part.
When we pray the Lord's Prayer, we are asking to be delivered from the hands of the evil one without being led into temptation. That's a tall order. However, we can't grow without being "tested". Remember, "temptation" and "testing" are two different things. Job was being tested. His alleged friends were doing the bidding of the adversary by tempting Job to lose faith and curse God (Job's wife was the worst offender on that count!). Job protested his innocence, and questioned God, but he didn't cross the line into sin. While we face constant testing as we mature in our relationship with The Almighty, it's OK to pray that we don't fall into temptation. It's also appropriate to pray for deliverance from evil.
We know that the adversary prowls around like a hungry lion, just looking for those he can devour. His favorite hunting ground is our minds, and his favorite weapon is Accusation. As we go through the testing of life we learn the difference between the Conviction of the Holy Spirit, and the Accusation of the evil one. "Conviction" is when the Holy Spirit touches our conscience and instructs us that something is wrong. He shows us the sin, and desires our repentance. If restitution is required, the Holy Spirit helps us with that too. The important thing is that Conviction has a Solution.
Accusation that comes from the evil one is a whole different matter. Like Job's alleged friends, the accuser offers no remedy, no solution, no forgiveness. It's just accuse, accuse, accuse. The accusations of Job's alleged friends go on for more than THIRTY Chapters in the Bible. Then another "friend" comes along (a youth) and starts accusing Job's friends (and Job too while he's at it). Finally, The LORD intervenes.
The more we are tested, the more we start to recognize the different voices before it gets totally out of hand.
And so we pray:
...Lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil."
