Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Matthew 5
Divorce
31 “It has been said, ‘Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.’[f] 32 But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Our Lord and Heavenly Father,
LORD, Our Strength!
You Are The The One Who Fortifies Us.
You Are Our Defense,
And You Lift Us Up
To Do Things of Which We Could Not Even Dream.
If YOU are For Us, Who can be Against Us?
All Of Nature Bows To You!
Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.
Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.
This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.
God Bless America.

Sorry I'm a little late today. I had a refrigerator delivered this morning, and it was bigger than my kitchen door. On top of that, I think I have Covid. I had to cancel my lessons today and will have to make them up, as they are already paid for. Grrrrr. And to top it off, today's Scripture Portion is one of the most controversial of anything in the New Testament.
To understand this teaching on divorce, we need to look at the status of women in the Time of Moses. It was during and after the Exodus that women started to be treated like actual human beings. A prime example of this is in Numbers 26 and Joshua 17 (Mentioned TWICE!). There was a family in the tribe of Manasseh that had only daughters. When the land was being portioned out amongst the people of Israel, these ladies approached Moses and asked that they be given a portion of land, since there were no sons. Moses granted their request, and Joshua honored it when they arrived in the Promised Land. This was a revolutionary innovation at the time.
The rules about Divorce in those ancient times were pretty hard-hearted. If a man got sick of his wife, he could just dump her, giving her the status of less than a widow. She would have no documentation of her situation and would probably be consigned to a life of begging. Some countries in the Middle East and Africa still have a system like this. All the man has to do is say "I divorce thee" three times, and it is done. The woman is officially dumped.
Moses realized that there had to be some kind of legal documentation so that women could be protected. This has evolved into an elaborate procedure among very pious Jews to this day.
This is what Jesus was talking about whe He said "a certificate of divorce". It was not an ideal situation, but people are sinners, and have hard hearts. Jesus emphasized the sanctity of marriage, and that it was not something to be taken lightly.
After I was widowed, I realized I could not afford to keep my four timeshares in Hawaii. The maintenance fees were over $600.00 a month. I couldn't just let them lapse though, as I was legally bound by contract. The Timeshare Companies have no exit strategy, and are ruthless. I had to hire an expensive attorney to have myself released from four contracts, and it cost as much as FOUR DIVORCES! If it is so difficult to extract oneself from a legal contract with regards to timeshares, imagine how difficult it is when Vows before God are involved. Jesus does grant an exception though, because He knows we are only human.
Since, back in that time, the husband was the only person who could initiate a divorce, these caveats were to protect women from men's hard-heartedness.
At least, that's how I see it.

these caveats were to protect women from men's hard-heartednessMy spiritual mother in the faith, a very wise women, told me on the eve of my marriage that Cheryl would teach me about feelings. (Indeed, once she drove 250 miles round-trip just to deliver to me a lesson on respecting others' feelings.)
I took that seriously, as a word through her from the Spirit, and she has been proved to be correct.
So, amen and AMEN!

Joining in prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem and for our beloved America.
I heard it taught that the reason in the OT, such as Genesis, that the man paid the dowry to get a wife (think of Leah and Rachel) was because it was alimony, child support in advance. The dowry was held in the Bank of the girl’s family and if the husband deserted her and her kids, she had a means to support herself with the dowry.
If that were enforced today, it would solve many social issues and take care of single moms and kids without government interference.
