Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Matthew 4
Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness
4 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted[a] by the devil. 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”
4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’[b]”
5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. 6 “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written:
“‘He will command his angels concerning you,
and they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’[c]”
7 Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’[d]”
8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9 “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”
10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’[e]”
11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.

According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.
This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,

Yesterday we talked about teaching, mentoring, and "practicing what you preach". In the Music World, there is a thing called "Paying Your Dues". This consists of studying, practicing, lugging equipment, playing for peanuts, touring, and, generally, working your tail off. (It also may include paying union dues, hence the origin of the phrase) Anyway, a musician who has "Paid His Dues" has earned the respect of his fellow musicians. Someone who is supremely talented but who has not paid his dues is missing something in the translation. It is as if the dues-paying produces a new dimension to the music, as the musician puts all those years of experience and testing into his performance. It's hard to explain, but it is true.
In order to be the Atonement for all the sins of the world, Jesus had to be sinless Himself. Otherwise, He would have to atone for Himself before He could help anybody else. But then, if He is sinless, how could He possible understand the temptations we face? And so, the Holy Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness for the experience of being tested and tempted. Now, there are many kinds of sins, but they can be grouped into categories, The Flesh, the World , and the Devil. Jesus was tested in all three catergories, and used the same weapon each time. It is one that is also available to us when we are tempted.
The first Temptation is "The Flesh". We are made of flesh, and have certain undeniable needs. First of all, we need food, water, and sleep. We also have sexual and physical needs like activity, purpose, and work. None of those needs are bad things, but they can be corrupted into gluttony, lust, and sloth. By fasting for 40 days in the desert, Jesus had a legitimate need for food, and there was nothing sinful about being hungry. But the Tempter knows what we need, and how we can turn it into sin in no time at all. He tries to plant doubt into the mind of Jesus: "IF you are the Son of God..."
If Jesus had turned the stones into bread, He would have been using His power to meet His Own needs. That is not why He came to earth, and so He would have negated His Mission if He did that.
Next, the Tempter goes after the sins of The World. That is the acquisition of Political and Religious Power. If Jesus had thrown Himself off the pinnacle of the Temple, and survived, in the view of all of Jerusalem, He would have instantly been hailed as a "god". This would have totally derailed the Plan of Redemption. The Tempter even tries mis-quoting Psalms to get Jesus to commit this sin, but, once again, Jesus counters the temptation with The Word of God.
Finally, the Tempter goes after Jesus with the same tactics he used with Eve. By offering all the kingdoms of the world to Jesus if Jesus would only compromise and "worship" the devil, he was impugning not only the Word of God, but the Character of God as well. Once again, Jesus uses The Word of God to resist the devil, and the Devil flees from Him.
We all have needs. Sometimes, it seems that we can't resist compromising our integrity in order to meet them. And yet, God gives us the weapons and resources we need to overcome. This little Passage of Matthew's Gospel shows us that we have a High Priest Who has experienced all the things we experience, and was able to be Victorious by the Word of God.
Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.
"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

Psalm 9
To the leader: according to Muth-labben. A Psalm of David.
1 I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart;
I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.
2 I will be glad and exult in you;
I will sing praise to your name, O Most High.
3 When my enemies turned back,
they stumbled and perished before you.
4 For you have maintained my just cause;
you have sat on the throne giving righteous judgement.
5 You have rebuked the nations, you have destroyed the wicked;
you have blotted out their name for ever and ever.
6 The enemies have vanished in everlasting ruins;
their cities you have rooted out;
the very memory of them has perished.
7 But the Lord sits enthroned for ever,
he has established his throne for judgement.
8 He judges the world with righteousness;
he judges the peoples with equity.
9 The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed,
a stronghold in times of trouble.
10 And those who know your name put their trust in you,
for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you.
11 Sing praises to the Lord, who dwells in Zion.
Declare his deeds among the peoples.
12 For he who avenges blood is mindful of them;
he does not forget the cry of the afflicted.
13 Be gracious to me, O Lord.
See what I suffer from those who hate me;
you are the one who lifts me up from the gates of death,
14 so that I may recount all your praises,
and, in the gates of daughter Zion,
rejoice in your deliverance.
15 The nations have sunk in the pit that they made;
in the net that they hid has their own foot been caught.
16 The Lord has made himself known, he has executed judgement;
the wicked are snared in the work of their own hands.
Higgaion. Selah
17 The wicked shall depart to Sheol,
all the nations that forget God.
18 For the needy shall not always be forgotten,
nor the hope of the poor perish for ever.
19 Rise up, O Lord! Do not let mortals prevail;
let the nations be judged before you.
20 Put them in fear, O Lord;
let the nations know that they are only human.
Selah

As a musician, there is never an end to paying my dues.
But this theme keeps repeating:
The World, the Flesh, and the Devil....
See that in Joshua (Hebrew for Jesus) in the OT. The children of Israel did battle with Jericho (the world), AI (the flesh), and the wily Gibeonites (the devil).
Joining in prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem and for our beloved America.

Interesting take on Joshua.
The Gibeonites succeeded in their deception, but when they were found out, they were consigned to be hewers of wood and carriers of water.
So they ended upbecoming slaves as a result of their deception.
Deceivers may think they are getting away with something, but they always get found out and it backfires on them.
