Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Matthew 1

Joseph Accepts Jesus as His Son

18 This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about[d]: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. 19 Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet[e] did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.

20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,[f] because he will save his people from their sins.”

22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”[g] (which means “God with us”).

24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. 25 But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Oh LORD,

Our God,

How Excellent is Your Name over All The Earth!

For You Alone Are Worthy,

You Alone Are LORD,

You Alone Are The King of the Universe!

Ancient of Days,

You Are The One True God of Abraham,

and We Praise and Worship You with Our Whole Heart,

Soul, Mind, and Spirit!

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

God Bless America.

_______________________________________________________

Just as Matthew's Genealogy of Jesus harkens back to the Hebrew Scriptures (The "Old Testament"), we will see at least 47 more quotes from the OT as we continue in this Gospel. Right here in the first chapter, Matthew quotes a prophecy of Isaiah, (Isaiah 7:14) about the Virgin Birth.

Modern scholars argue that the Hebrew word for "virgin" used in Isaiah, alma, could also just mean a "young woman". But Isaiah is saying that this would be a "sign". A "sign" in this context is a miracle. It's not such a big miracle for a young woman to become pregnant, but it certainly is a miracle for a virgin to become pregnant. And that was the interpretation of Matthew, a First Century Jew, writing to other First Century Jews.

Matthew wasn't the only one who interpreted "alma" as "virgin". During the Second Temple Period, about 200-300BC, a team of seventy Hebrew Scholars translated the Hebrew Scriptures into Greek, which was the common language of the period. We call this mighty work of scholarship "The Septuagint", after the Latin Word for "Seventy". It became the commonly used translation of the Scriptures up to the time of the Destruction of the Temple in 70AD, and became widely used in Rabbinical Judaism until the Masoretic text that came out in the 7th Century AD. (This is a very brief and skeletal explanation of these texts. I am not a Hebrew scholar by any stretch of the imagination!).

The point I am about to make is that the Esteemed 70 Scholars who had a whole translation of the Scriptures named after them, used Parthenos (παρθένος) which is the Greek term for "virgin" when they translated Isaiah. It was a Prophecy that was considered "Messianic" and yet to be fulfilled when it was written centuries earlier. There were some parts of the prophecy that were fulfilled right away in Isaiah's time, but not this one.

As we continue in Matthew, you will see him quote the Old Testament again and again. He demonstrates that there is no real "divide" between the Old and the New. God is the Same, Yesterday, Today, and Forever.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

God Bless America.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen

Psalm 47

To the leader. Of the Korahites. A Psalm.

1 Clap your hands, all you peoples;
shout to God with loud songs of joy.
2 For the Lord, the Most High, is awesome,
a great king over all the earth.
3 He subdued peoples under us,
and nations under our feet.
4 He chose our heritage for us,
the pride of Jacob whom he loves.
Selah

5 God has gone up with a shout,
the Lord with the sound of a trumpet.
6 Sing praises to God, sing praises;
sing praises to our King, sing praises.
7 For God is the king of all the earth;
sing praises with a psalm.*

8 God is king over the nations;
God sits on his holy throne.
9 The princes of the peoples gather
as the people of the God of Abraham.
For the shields of the earth belong to God;
he is highly exalted.

Your argument for Isaiah’s intent is well-presented and persuasive. Thanks, and

Very good points about the translation of the word virgin. Wish I had known that in college when an atheist brought it to my attention.

Joining in prayer, left that other site, for the Peace of Jerusalem and for our beloved America.
