Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Exodus 14

14 Then the Lord said to Moses, 2 “Tell the Israelites to turn back and encamp near Pi Hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea. They are to encamp by the sea, directly opposite Baal Zephon. 3 Pharaoh will think, ‘The Israelites are wandering around the land in confusion, hemmed in by the desert.’ 4 And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and he will pursue them. But I will gain glory for myself through Pharaoh and all his army, and the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord.” So the Israelites did this. 5 When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, Pharaoh and his officials changed their minds about them and said, “What have we done? We have let the Israelites go and have lost their services!” 6 So he had his chariot made ready and took his army with him. 7 He took six hundred of the best chariots, along with all the other chariots of Egypt, with officers over all of them. 8 The Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, so that he pursued the Israelites, who were marching out boldly. 9 The Egyptians—all Pharaoh’s horses and chariots, horsemen[a] and troops—pursued the Israelites and overtook them as they camped by the sea near Pi Hahiroth, opposite Baal Zephon.

10 As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up, and there were the Egyptians, marching after them. They were terrified and cried out to the Lord. 11 They said to Moses, “Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us to the desert to die? What have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt? 12 Didn’t we say to you in Egypt, ‘Leave us alone; let us serve the Egyptians’? It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert!”

13 Moses answered the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. 14 The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”

15 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to me? Tell the Israelites to move on. 16 Raise your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea to divide the water so that the Israelites can go through the sea on dry ground. 17 I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they will go in after them. And I will gain glory through Pharaoh and all his army, through his chariots and his horsemen. 18 The Egyptians will know that I am the Lord when I gain glory through Pharaoh, his chariots and his horsemen.”

19 Then the angel of God, who had been traveling in front of Israel’s army, withdrew and went behind them. The pillar of cloud also moved from in front and stood behind them, 20 coming between the armies of Egypt and Israel. Throughout the night the cloud brought darkness to the one side and light to the other side; so neither went near the other all night long.

21 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night the Lord drove the sea back with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land. The waters were divided, 22 and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with a wall of water on their right and on their left.

23 The Egyptians pursued them, and all Pharaoh’s horses and chariots and horsemen followed them into the sea. 24 During the last watch of the night the Lord looked down from the pillar of fire and cloud at the Egyptian army and threw it into confusion. 25 He jammed[b] the wheels of their chariots so that they had difficulty driving. And the Egyptians said, “Let’s get away from the Israelites! The Lord is fighting for them against Egypt.”

26 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea so that the waters may flow back over the Egyptians and their chariots and horsemen.” 27 Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and at daybreak the sea went back to its place. The Egyptians were fleeing toward[c] it, and the Lord swept them into the sea. 28 The water flowed back and covered the chariots and horsemen—the entire army of Pharaoh that had followed the Israelites into the sea. Not one of them survived.

29 But the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with a wall of water on their right and on their left. 30 That day the Lord saved Israel from the hands of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians lying dead on the shore. 31 And when the Israelites saw the mighty hand of the Lord displayed against the Egyptians, the people feared the Lord and put their trust in him and in Moses his servant.

Psalm 19

To the leader. A Psalm of David.

1 The heavens are telling the glory of God;
and the firmament* proclaims his handiwork.
2 Day to day pours forth speech,
and night to night declares knowledge.
3 There is no speech, nor are there words;
their voice is not heard;
4 yet their voice* goes out through all the earth,
and their words to the end of the world.

In the heavens* he has set a tent for the sun,
5 which comes out like a bridegroom from his wedding canopy,
and like a strong man runs its course with joy.
6 Its rising is from the end of the heavens,
and its circuit to the end of them;
and nothing is hidden from its heat.

7 The law of the Lord is perfect,
reviving the soul;
the decrees of the Lord are sure,
making wise the simple;
8 the precepts of the Lord are right,
rejoicing the heart;
the commandment of the Lord is clear,
enlightening the eyes;
9 the fear of the Lord is pure,
enduring for ever;
the ordinances of the Lord are true
and righteous altogether.
10 More to be desired are they than gold,
even much fine gold;
sweeter also than honey,
and drippings of the honeycomb.

11 Moreover by them is your servant warned;
in keeping them there is great reward.
12 But who can detect their errors?
Clear me from hidden faults.
13 Keep back your servant also from the insolent;*
do not let them have dominion over me.
Then I shall be blameless,
and innocent of great transgression.

14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
be acceptable to you,
O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.

I live near a road that was the original route from Boston to Cape Cod. It is a long, circuitous road that meanders through the South Shore, changing names as it crawls through cities and towns that pre-date the American Revolution, with occasional views of the Atlantic Ocean. There are hundreds of STOP Signs and Red Lights along the way. The homes look old, and that is confirmed by little signs on them like this:

"HOME OF JAMES D. PROUTY
1730"

Common knowledge is that if you own one of those homes, you are obligated to maintain it in its original style, whether it is a mansion or a farmhouse. No remodeling, no modern windows, and NO crazy colors for your paintjob!

A ride to Cape Cod can take several hours by this route.

During the Eisenhower Administration, an incredible Interstate Highway System was engineered to make America accessible to all. This marvelous feat of Engineering, which is only as old as I am, made a road trip to Cape Cod, Niagara Falls, or even Florida, a possibility for a Family. Just pile the kids into the Station Wagon, throw your luggage on the Roof Rack, and GO. Cape Cod was an hour away, and New York City was Five Hours. We started to speak, not in terms of distance, but in time required to travel. It got to the point that in the nineties, my husband and I rode our motorcycles to Washington DC every Memorial Day for Rolling Thunder. It was 10 Hours to DC. We could choose to ride straight through, or stay overnight in New York State, cutting the journey in half. There was always a place to sleep, as little Motels dotted the Interstate the entire way. If one was full, we would just ride to the next one.

We got so good at this that we began to ride further, to Virginai Beach, Williamsburg, West Virginia, North Carolina, and so on. We rode the Blue Ridge Parkway, and through the Appalachians. One time, using the Interstate Highway System, we visited Harpers Ferry, Antietam, and Gettysburg all on the same day. Although we did get off the bikes and walk around a bit, we really did not get as much out of it as we did the times we spent the whole day at those Historic Places. But, it was an accomplishment anyway!

Even with two million people, Moses should have only taken a week or two to get from Egypt to The Promised Land. There were well-established caravan routes, and Moses's own ancestors had trekked back and forth a number of times during the days of Joseph. (Joseph, or rather his bones, were making the trip yet again). But, in the intervening years, hostile tribes had taken over the area, and so, Moses was directed to take a different, longer route by the Red Sea. There were a number of reasons God directed Moses to take the "long way home".

First of all, the people were coming out of a place where they had been slaves for 400 years. They were not warriors, and they had elderly people, women, and children among them. As slaves, they may have toughened up their bodies, but they still had a lot of emotional and social baggage that left them ill-equipped to face an enemy and fight for their lives. We call this a "Slave-Mentality". A quick trip to the Promised Land would have made them sitting ducks for any Barbarian Tribe to sweep down and make them slaves again.

The Israelites needed to know that God would take care of them. A week or two on the road was not enough to teach them this important lesson. However, a much longer time in the desert, eating Manna, and receiving Water from a Rock, should have been enough to teach that God was definitely looking out for them.

The new route should only have taken a few months. The Forty Years of wandering was the result of rebellion and fear. The people believed the report of 10 of 12 spies, and quaked in terror at the idea of having to face opposition. Only Joshua and Caleb (and Moses, of course) believed God and were ready to go forward. This is why the journey was lengthened, to purge the people with the "Slave Mentality" from the ranks and open the Promised Land to a New Generation.

The Forty Years were the result of disobedience, but were an incredible learning experience. The Israelites had to learn to rely upon God for food, water, meat, protection from poisonous snakes, hostile natives, and diseases. It was during this journey that they received the Ten Commandments, constructed the Tabernacle and the Ark of the Covenant, organized their camp and society according to God's instructions, created government, ordained a priesthood, and learned about their history. It was a generation of learning to rely upon God and obey Him.

It is less than 30 miles to Cape Cod and takes less than a half hour on the bike if I take the Interstate. But, it seems that, whenever I go, I take the old route, which takes well over an hour.

To quote Robert Frost, "That has made all the Difference."

You will need an Air Conditioned Bus for the Civil War Route as well.

We went to the 135th Anniversary Re-Enactment of Gettysburg, and it was so hot that the Harleys (which are air-colled) overheated on Route 15.
