Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Exodus 13
Consecration of the Firstborn
13 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Consecrate to me every firstborn male. The first offspring of every womb among the Israelites belongs to me, whether human or animal.”
3 Then Moses said to the people, “Commemorate this day, the day you came out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery, because the Lord brought you out of it with a mighty hand. Eat nothing containing yeast. 4 Today, in the month of Aviv, you are leaving. 5 When the Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Hivites and Jebusites—the land he swore to your ancestors to give you, a land flowing with milk and honey—you are to observe this ceremony in this month: 6 For seven days eat bread made without yeast and on the seventh day hold a festival to the Lord. 7 Eat unleavened bread during those seven days; nothing with yeast in it is to be seen among you, nor shall any yeast be seen anywhere within your borders. 8 On that day tell your son, ‘I do this because of what the Lord did for me when I came out of Egypt.’ 9 This observance will be for you like a sign on your hand and a reminder on your forehead that this law of the Lord is to be on your lips. For the Lord brought you out of Egypt with his mighty hand. 10 You must keep this ordinance at the appointed time year after year.
11 “After the Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanites and gives it to you, as he promised on oath to you and your ancestors, 12 you are to give over to the Lord the first offspring of every womb. All the firstborn males of your livestock belong to the Lord. 13 Redeem with a lamb every firstborn donkey, but if you do not redeem it, break its neck. Redeem every firstborn among your sons.
14 “In days to come, when your son asks you, ‘What does this mean?’ say to him, ‘With a mighty hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 15 When Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go, the Lord killed the firstborn of both people and animals in Egypt. This is why I sacrifice to the Lord the first male offspring of every womb and redeem each of my firstborn sons.’ 16 And it will be like a sign on your hand and a symbol on your forehead that the Lord brought us out of Egypt with his mighty hand.”

Yogi Berra was famous for his funny expressions. One of my favorites is:
"When you come to a fork in the road, TAKE IT!"
Everyone knows that, at a fork in the road, we have to take one route or the other. Robert Frost examines this in his famous poem, "The Road Not Taken".
The Road Not Taken
BY ROBERT FROST
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
Jesus also speaks of a fork in the road during The Sermon on the Mount:
“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. (Matthew 7:13 NIV)
We all come to forks in the road at various times, and we all have to make a choice. We can't just "take it".
Pharaoh had a choice. He could have obeyed God, but instead chose the path that ended up with the death of the firstborn of all Egypt. Meanwhile, the firstborn sons of Israel were spared, and thus, belonged to God. It was intended that the firstborn sons would all become priests to serve God both in the coming desert years and in the Promised Land. The firstborn of animals also would belong to God and were to be sacrificed. It was a good plan, as every family would have a son who was in service to God.
Somewhere in the Desert of Sinai, the People of Israel came to a spiritual "fork in the road". Moses had been up on that mountain for over a month! The people prevailed upon Aaron to make them a god out of their golden jewelry that they had plundered from the Egyptians. They had plenty of it, and were able to fashion a Golden Calf (there's Apis and Hathor again!). However, gold itself is not evil. We shall see that this same gold was used to fashion the Tabernacle and its furnishings, and later, the Temple.
Anyway, down the mountain comes Moses and there are all these firstborn sons dancing around the Golden Calf. This is a huge sin, and Moses calls out to the few that took the narrow road less travelled.
"Who among you will serve The LORD?" Moses thunders.
The firstborn sons of the tribe of Levi rush to Moses's side. The others are swallowed by an earthquake.
So now we have a Priesthood made up of the Sons of Levi. All the other tribes have firstborn sons who were originally supposed to serve, but are no longer needed in that role. They were to "be redeemed" to free them from the obligation by paying a Levite five shekels of silver (Numbers 18:16). This custom, (Pidyon Haben), is still practiced today by religious Jews, but the restrictions (a Firstborn Male, born naturally, not of the Tribe of Levi, of Israelite parents, etc) are very stringent.
Jesus of Nazareth, Who was of the Tribe of Judah, went through this ceremony as recorded in the Book of Luke:
(Luke 2:22-38 NIV)
Jesus Presented in the Temple 22 When the time came for the purification rites required by the Law of Moses, Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, "Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord" ), 24 and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: "a pair of doves or two young pigeons."
It is probable that the two doves were worth about five shekels. Mary and Joseph did all the things required by the Law of Moses with regards to her Firstborn Son.
When we find ourselves at a fork in the road, we have a choice. As Joshua said upon entering the Promised Land,
“But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (Josh. 24:15, NKJV)
May we always choose the narrow path, the Road less travelled.

Psalm 27
Of David.
1 The Lord is my light and my salvation;
whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold* of my life;
of whom shall I be afraid?
2 When evildoers assail me
to devour my flesh—
my adversaries and foes—
they shall stumble and fall.
3 Though an army encamp against me,
my heart shall not fear;
though war rise up against me,
yet I will be confident.
4 One thing I asked of the Lord,
that will I seek after:
to live in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life,
to behold the beauty of the Lord,
and to inquire in his temple.
5 For he will hide me in his shelter
in the day of trouble;
he will conceal me under the cover of his tent;
he will set me high on a rock.
6 Now my head is lifted up
above my enemies all around me,
and I will offer in his tent
sacrifices with shouts of joy;
I will sing and make melody to the Lord.
7 Hear, O Lord, when I cry aloud,
be gracious to me and answer me!
8 ‘Come,’ my heart says, ‘seek his face!’
Your face, Lord, do I seek.
9 Do not hide your face from me.
Do not turn your servant away in anger,
you who have been my help.
Do not cast me off, do not forsake me,
O God of my salvation!
10 If my father and mother forsake me,
the Lord will take me up.
11 Teach me your way, O Lord,
and lead me on a level path
because of my enemies.
12 Do not give me up to the will of my adversaries,
for false witnesses have risen against me,
and they are breathing out violence.
13 I believe that I shall see the goodness of the Lord
in the land of the living.
14 Wait for the Lord;
be strong, and let your heart take courage;
wait for the Lord!

Joining in prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem and for our beloved America.
Please indulge me in this thought.
When I reread this chapter, something big jumped out at me about the sign/mark on the hand/forehead.
“This observance will be for you like a sign on your hand and a reminder on your forehead that this law of the Lord is to be on your lips.”
One version said—like a mark on your hand and forehead.
The context is the Passover, Christ, our redemption from slavery and our worship.
Satan has his counterfeit to that, his mark and demand for worship, in Revelation 13:
16 It also forced all people, great and small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads, 17 so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of its name.
18 This calls for wisdom. Let the person who has insight calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man. That number is 666.
