Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Exodus 10
The Plague of Locusts
10 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh, for I have hardened his heart and the hearts of his officials so that I may perform these signs of mine among them 2 that you may tell your children and grandchildren how I dealt harshly with the Egyptians and how I performed my signs among them, and that you may know that I am the Lord.”
3 So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said to him, “This is what the Lord, the God of the Hebrews, says: ‘How long will you refuse to humble yourself before me? Let my people go, so that they may worship me. 4 If you refuse to let them go, I will bring locusts into your country tomorrow. 5 They will cover the face of the ground so that it cannot be seen. They will devour what little you have left after the hail, including every tree that is growing in your fields. 6 They will fill your houses and those of all your officials and all the Egyptians—something neither your parents nor your ancestors have ever seen from the day they settled in this land till now.’” Then Moses turned and left Pharaoh.
7 Pharaoh’s officials said to him, “How long will this man be a snare to us? Let the people go, so that they may worship the Lord their God. Do you not yet realize that Egypt is ruined?”
8 Then Moses and Aaron were brought back to Pharaoh. “Go, worship the Lord your God,” he said. “But tell me who will be going.”
9 Moses answered, “We will go with our young and our old, with our sons and our daughters, and with our flocks and herds, because we are to celebrate a festival to the Lord.”
10 Pharaoh said, “The Lord be with you—if I let you go, along with your women and children! Clearly you are bent on evil.[a] 11 No! Have only the men go and worship the Lord, since that’s what you have been asking for.” Then Moses and Aaron were driven out of Pharaoh’s presence.
12 And the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over Egypt so that locusts swarm over the land and devour everything growing in the fields, everything left by the hail.”
13 So Moses stretched out his staff over Egypt, and the Lord made an east wind blow across the land all that day and all that night. By morning the wind had brought the locusts; 14 they invaded all Egypt and settled down in every area of the country in great numbers. Never before had there been such a plague of locusts, nor will there ever be again. 15 They covered all the ground until it was black. They devoured all that was left after the hail—everything growing in the fields and the fruit on the trees. Nothing green remained on tree or plant in all the land of Egypt.
16 Pharaoh quickly summoned Moses and Aaron and said, “I have sinned against the Lord your God and against you. 17 Now forgive my sin once more and pray to the Lord your God to take this deadly plague away from me.”
18 Moses then left Pharaoh and prayed to the Lord. 19 And the Lord changed the wind to a very strong west wind, which caught up the locusts and carried them into the Red Sea.[b] Not a locust was left anywhere in Egypt. 20 But the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he would not let the Israelites go.

In the original movie "The Blues Brothers", the disreputable Joliet Jake (John Belushi) gives a laundry list of excuses as to why he left his jilted bride (Carrie Fisher) at the altar:
" I ran outta gas. I had a flat tire. I didn't have enough money for cab fare. My tux didn't come back from the cleaners. An old friend came in from outta town. Someone stole my car. There was an earthquake, a terrible flood, locusts. It wasn't my fault!"
Notice how the excuses accelerate in severity up to the last one, which is the worst of all: LOCUSTS.
Even today, when there is an invasion of locusts, newscasters call it "A Plague of Biblical Proportions". When locusts swarm, they eat everything in their path and bring Destruction, Chaos, Starvation, and, sometimes, Political Turmoil. When People are hungry, they may rebel and riot to replace governments that have not protected them from starvation.
One or two locusts are not even called "locusts", as they are different metabolically from the swarming insects. The lone creature is similar to a harmless grasshopper until its numbers reach a tipping point. Then, a biological switch gets turned on and they swarm. Without stretching the analogy too much, humans can behave that way as well. A person who is shy and harmless can feel empowered when he is part of a larger group. In the context of a gang, a normally non-violent person can undergo a change and perform horrible acts due to the peer pressure and persuasion of the crowd. It is very difficult to swim against the tide of popular culture, religion, entertainment, sports, academia, politics, and the disapproval of our peers, but sometimes, we must. It is easier to just become another locust in the swarm, but I want to remain a "grasshopper" for as long as I can hold out. Of course, I can't do it without The LORD.
In Egyptian Mythology, Seth was the God of Storms, Swarms, Civil Disorder, and Chaos. Like the Biblical Cain, Seth murdered his little brother Osiris, and chopped him up into little pieces. Isis, Osiris's sister (and also his wife!) searched the world and finally found all the pieces except one, and reassembled Osiris, introducing the practice of mummification to the Egyptians. With the reassembled Osiris (and a spare part that Isis fashioned herself) Isis conceived Horus the Falcon-god. Seth, furious that his plan was foiled, vented his spleen on humanty, and became the bearer of Violent Storms, Freaks of Nature, and Disorder. But, the Egyptians believed thay could appease Seth with the appropriate rituals and sacrifices and remedy the storms and the chaos.
The Egyptians had so many gods and godesses that it is hard to keep track. Some of them overlap, and are avatars of each other. The Myths, too, overlap and contradict each other. A perfect example of this dynamic are the myths concerning Night and Day:
DAY:
1. The god Khepri, in the form of the Scarab Beetle, rolls the Sun across the sky.
2. The recently deceased Pharaoh, in the form of Osiris, floats the Sun across the sky on a special boat, called the "Solar Barque".
3. Amon Ra, the actual "Sun God" flies the Sun on its daily journey on wings.
NIGHT:
1. The Cobra Snake ("Apophus" perhaps) devours the Sun at sunset and disgorges it in the morning.
2. The Sun travels through the body of the goddess Nut, whose skin is emblazoned with the stars.
3. Osiris (in the form of the deceased, mummified Pharaoh) safely transports the Sun across the darkness in the Solar Barque.
In Tomorrow's Reading, we shall see how all six of these Myths, and the gods associated with them, are judged and humiliated by The One True God.

Psalm 64
To the leader. A Psalm of David.
1 Hear my voice, O God, in my complaint;
preserve my life from the dread enemy.
2 Hide me from the secret plots of the wicked,
from the scheming of evildoers,
3 who whet their tongues like swords,
who aim bitter words like arrows,
4 shooting from ambush at the blameless;
they shoot suddenly and without fear.
5 They hold fast to their evil purpose;
they talk of laying snares secretly,
thinking, ‘Who can see us?*
6 Who can search out our crimes?*
We have thought out a cunningly conceived plot.’
For the human heart and mind are deep.
7 But God will shoot his arrow at them;
they will be wounded suddenly.
8 Because of their tongue he will bring them to ruin;*
all who see them will shake with horror.
9 Then everyone will fear;
they will tell what God has brought about,
and ponder what he has done.
10 Let the righteous rejoice in the Lord
and take refuge in him.
Let all the upright in heart glory.
