Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Exodus 8
The Plague of Flies
20 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Get up early in the morning and confront Pharaoh as he goes to the river and say to him, ‘This is what the Lord says: Let my people go, so that they may worship me. 21 If you do not let my people go, I will send swarms of flies on you and your officials, on your people and into your houses. The houses of the Egyptians will be full of flies; even the ground will be covered with them.
22 “‘But on that day I will deal differently with the land of Goshen, where my people live; no swarms of flies will be there, so that you will know that I, the Lord, am in this land. 23 I will make a distinction[b] between my people and your people. This sign will occur tomorrow.’”
24 And the Lord did this. Dense swarms of flies poured into Pharaoh’s palace and into the houses of his officials; throughout Egypt the land was ruined by the flies.
25 Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, “Go, sacrifice to your God here in the land.”
26 But Moses said, “That would not be right. The sacrifices we offer the Lord our God would be detestable to the Egyptians. And if we offer sacrifices that are detestable in their eyes, will they not stone us? 27 We must take a three-day journey into the wilderness to offer sacrifices to the Lord our God, as he commands us.”
28 Pharaoh said, “I will let you go to offer sacrifices to the Lord your God in the wilderness, but you must not go very far. Now pray for me.”
29 Moses answered, “As soon as I leave you, I will pray to the Lord, and tomorrow the flies will leave Pharaoh and his officials and his people. Only let Pharaoh be sure that he does not act deceitfully again by not letting the people go to offer sacrifices to the Lord.”
30 Then Moses left Pharaoh and prayed to the Lord, 31 and the Lord did what Moses asked. The flies left Pharaoh and his officials and his people; not a fly remained. 32 But this time also Pharaoh hardened his heart and would not let the people go.

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.
Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.
This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,

A tired Vulture approches the boarding gate of a commercial airliner. Under each wing he has tucked a dead raccoon. As he approaches the gangway, the Airline Agent says:
"I'm sorry, sir. Only ONE Carry-On is allowed per passenger."
(Sorry, I couldn't resist!)
In the Ancient Egyptian pantheon, the Vulture and The Fly were very important characters. They are Nature's "Clean-Up Crew." In an agrarian economy surrounded by desert, there were lots of animals, and animals die. The carrion would just sit there and be a blight on the land if it weren't for the Vultures and Flies. Like the beetles and the flies, Vultures were so much a part of the natural order of things that they were elevated to godhood. In fact, the crowns of Pharaoh often had a Vulture emblazoned on the forehead right next to the Cobra.
The Vultures and Flies were also pictographs in Hieroglyphics. They stood for sounds, just like in our own phonetic alphabet. In moderation, these creatures had a purpose. That purpose was to eat carrion and keep the environment clean. The Creator does not make "mistakes". However, people DO make mistakes. Perhaps it was a mistake to start off today's Meditation with an execrable pun, but I'm only human!
Pharaoh made a big mistake by hardening his heart against the Hebrews. God's judgement came, not in something outrageous like giant rays coming out of the sky, but in an excess of a totally natural event or creature blown up into ridiculous proportions. Each event or creature was somehow related to the Ancient Egyptian Religion. The eaters of dung and carrion (insects) became a plague only when they were multiplied exponentially. The guardians of the environment became destroyers. The Egyptian gods could not save their worshippers. The Egyptian Magicians could not duplicate the plagues. Egypt was sinking deeper and deeper into misery, but the worst was yet to come.

***Perhaps it was a mistake to start off today’s Meditation with an execrable pun, but I’m only human!***
But hey, left that other site
Jesus and the prophets made lots of puns. You could even do a prayer thread sequence on that.
eg. Nathaniel—a Jacob in which there is no Jacob
You are Peter, a stone, and upon this Big Rock I will build my church
Straining at gnats, swallowing camels...etc.
Joining in prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem and for our beloved America.

There are some great puns in the original hebrew as well. Especially where there were no vowels, a word could be read a number of different ways to mean different things.

Psalm 136
1 O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,
for his steadfast love endures for ever.
2 O give thanks to the God of gods,
for his steadfast love endures for ever.
3 O give thanks to the Lord of lords,
for his steadfast love endures for ever;
4 who alone does great wonders,
for his steadfast love endures for ever;
5 who by understanding made the heavens,
for his steadfast love endures for ever;
6 who spread out the earth on the waters,
for his steadfast love endures for ever;
7 who made the great lights,
for his steadfast love endures for ever;
8 the sun to rule over the day,
for his steadfast love endures for ever;
9 the moon and stars to rule over the night,
for his steadfast love endures for ever;
10 who struck Egypt through their firstborn,
for his steadfast love endures for ever;
11 and brought Israel out from among them,
for his steadfast love endures for ever;
12 with a strong hand and an outstretched arm,
for his steadfast love endures for ever;
13 who divided the Red Sea* in two,
for his steadfast love endures for ever;
14 and made Israel pass through the midst of it,
for his steadfast love endures for ever;
15 but overthrew Pharaoh and his army in the Red Sea,*
for his steadfast love endures for ever;
16 who led his people through the wilderness,
for his steadfast love endures for ever;
17 who struck down great kings,
for his steadfast love endures for ever;
18 and killed famous kings,
for his steadfast love endures for ever;
19 Sihon, king of the Amorites,
for his steadfast love endures for ever;
20 and Og, king of Bashan,
for his steadfast love endures for ever;
21 and gave their land as a heritage,
for his steadfast love endures for ever;
22 a heritage to his servant Israel,
for his steadfast love endures for ever.
23 It is he who remembered us in our low estate,
for his steadfast love endures for ever;
24 and rescued us from our foes,
for his steadfast love endures for ever;
25 who gives food to all flesh,
for his steadfast love endures for ever.
26 O give thanks to the God of heaven,
for his steadfast love endures for ever.
