According to a recent study, less than 1% of nuns in America are under 40.
Across the United States, young adults are becoming less religious.
A 2018 and 2019 Pew Research Center survey found that the number of Americans who identify as Christians has dropped 12% over the past decade. The group who described themselves as Catholic, in particular, has also shrunk, leaving a crisis in the Catholic sisterhood. Nuns are growing older and there is a concern that there will be fewer young people looking to join the sisterhood.
According to a recent study, less than 1% of nuns in America are under 40 and the average sister is 80 years old.
Sister Joanne Persch just turned 88. She said that many of her friends who joined her in service in the early 1950s have died. Throughout the painful pandemic and societal upheaval, she said there is still a great need for nuns in America.
“Well, I think it's a big mistake to say that religious life is dying,” said Persch. “And I look around me in our community and I see such vibrant, such life. It's changing and growing into something we can’t even imagine.”

Golden opportunity for leftists to fill the ranks and pervert the mission.
They need more trans nuns. That will fix the problem.
Too late for most young girls to be nuns, because most are already somes.
There are young sisters in two traditional orders near me. They are delightful, and successfully recruiting. Hope they stay under the Vatican radar.
“fewer”
the whole leaving society to live a life with other celibates thing just doesn’t appeal as much anymore in this day and age. This is on top of the general decline of respect for religions. Most parishes seem to be taking page out of the Protestants textbook and just have lay employees and volunteers pick up the slack. I presume if things continue going this way. Nuns and monks and maybe even priests eventually will just be an honorary position for the few willing to go the extra mile.
That “whew” sound you’re hearing is pre-pubescence girls not being struck by rulers.
And somewhere… Way back in my Catholic grade school days… Sister Helen Most Homicidal, with a mustache that would make Joe Stalin blush… Is smiling…
300 pounds of Mean, And could chuck a history book across the room with deadly accuracy… “Gods vengeance”…
Man, that broad hated me… Lol. Could be because the chalk handprints I put on her chair… They ended up his giant white handprints on her ample rear end… And let me tell you, that but had its own ZIP Code.
I wouldn't worry about it.
Once the social fabric is torn asunder and the emptiness the world offers becomes glaringly obvious, the interest in the clergy will return, and its role will be to teach everyone the basics, such as peeing downstream from where you drink and not sleeping with anyone who isn't your spouse.
Satan would love that.
Where is ‘near me’? Which state?
The 1% that are under 40 are largely in traditional or conservative orders (e.g. Nashville Dominicans). That has been the trend for 30+ years.
This is likely true of “cloistered nuns”, those who live in convents. However, non-cloistered “sisters” groups seem to be strongly growing. They are far more active in the community than are nuns, and some groups are growing faster than the groups can support.
While “sisters” used to be associated with radical leftism, those types are dying out to be replaced with apolitical ones. During the time of JPII, there was a great revitalization of sisterhoods.
That is such a false stereotype.
I went through 12 years of excellent education by the Josephite Sisters, and never once did I see any girl get hit, with a ruler or otherwise.
Agreed. Trite and lazy. In don’t know about the other states, but corporal punishment was outlawed in all schools in CA fifty years ago. Time to give it a rest
Thank you.
I was a Catholic school girl for 10 years, and I got hit with a ruler for passing a note in class. I saw many other students getting hit, too. But, in those days, kids were hit as punishment. And, like other people, every sister had her own personality. Some were sweet. Some were mean. Most were merely doing their job, and hitting was considered acceptable back then.
