Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Genesis 40

The Cupbearer and the Baker

40 Some time later, the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt offended their master, the king of Egypt. 2 Pharaoh was angry with his two officials, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker, 3 and put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, in the same prison where Joseph was confined. 4 The captain of the guard assigned them to Joseph, and he attended them.

After they had been in custody for some time, 5 each of the two men—the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were being held in prison—had a dream the same night, and each dream had a meaning of its own.

6 When Joseph came to them the next morning, he saw that they were dejected. 7 So he asked Pharaoh’s officials who were in custody with him in his master’s house, “Why do you look so sad today?”

8 “We both had dreams,” they answered, “but there is no one to interpret them.”

Then Joseph said to them, “Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell me your dreams.”

9 So the chief cupbearer told Joseph his dream. He said to him, “In my dream I saw a vine in front of me, 10 and on the vine were three branches. As soon as it budded, it blossomed, and its clusters ripened into grapes. 11 Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes, squeezed them into Pharaoh’s cup and put the cup in his hand.”

12 “This is what it means,” Joseph said to him. “The three branches are three days. 13 Within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your position, and you will put Pharaoh’s cup in his hand, just as you used to do when you were his cupbearer. 14 But when all goes well with you, remember me and show me kindness; mention me to Pharaoh and get me out of this prison. 15 I was forcibly carried off from the land of the Hebrews, and even here I have done nothing to deserve being put in a dungeon.”

16 When the chief baker saw that Joseph had given a favorable interpretation, he said to Joseph, “I too had a dream: On my head were three baskets of bread.[a] 17 In the top basket were all kinds of baked goods for Pharaoh, but the birds were eating them out of the basket on my head.”

18 “This is what it means,” Joseph said. “The three baskets are three days. 19 Within three days Pharaoh will lift off your head and impale your body on a pole. And the birds will eat away your flesh.”

20 Now the third day was Pharaoh’s birthday, and he gave a feast for all his officials. He lifted up the heads of the chief cupbearer and the chief baker in the presence of his officials: 21 He restored the chief cupbearer to his position, so that he once again put the cup into Pharaoh’s hand— 22 but he impaled the chief baker, just as Joseph had said to them in his interpretation.

23 The chief cupbearer, however, did not remember Joseph; he forgot him.

Most Gracious Heavenly Father,
With Our Whole Soul,
Mind, Heart, and Strength,
With Everything that has Your Precious Breath of Life,
We Love You!

Your Perfect Precepts and Judgments,
Which, in Our Hearts,
We Know That No Human Being Could Ever Live Up To Your Holy Standard
of Purity and Holiness.
Give us Strength to Resist Temptation,
Grace that We Should Not Tempt Others,
And Mercy When We Fail.

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

God Bless America.

_______________________________________________________

At my Nephew's Memorial Service yesterday, I ran into a member of the family whom I hadn't seen in over twenty years. Even though this person is ten years younger than myself, I thought she was her mother. And so, I gave her a hug and expressed my condolences to ...her mother's name! She corrected me immediately and I felt like a total jerk for the entire rest of the afternoon. All the time I was in shock at how much alcohol had ravaged this person's appearance. She was the ONE person I was worried about meeting there, as she had a reputation for causing trouble, and saying horrible things to people. It ended up being ME who said a horrible thing, and I didn't even mean to. I honestly didn't recognize her.

When we read the story of Joseph, we wonder how the Patriarchs could not recognize their brother Joseph. After all, they had lived with him for 17 years and he was their brother. However, they sold hm into slavery nearly twenty years earlier and had spread the tale that he was dead. They had plunged their father Jacob into deep mourning, and the family went on living as if Joseph was dead, so for all intents and purposes, he was. Besides, who could survive a desert trek, years in slavery, an Egyptian Prison (I hear they are still pretty awful, and breeding grounds for terrorists), and the passage of nearly twenty years?

Joseph was a person of such integrity that, in whatever circumstances he found himself, he caused all around him to prosper. As Potiphar's slave, he quickly rose from slave to foreman, to administrator of Potiphar's Household Business. His competence, sense of responsibility, and integrity caused Potiphar to prosper, and Mrs. Potiphar to lust after him. And so, he ended up in Prison because of a false accusation of rape.

Now, in prison, Joseph once again shines. The Warden sees a good thing and elevates Joseph to a kind of "Assistant Warden". Even though he is still a Prisoner, he behaves with such dignity that he is soon a trusted confidant of the Warden and Prisoners alike.

It is in this capacity that he counsels two new prisoners who have been jailed by Pharaoh for some reason. Their "crimes" are not stated, but, knowing that Pharaoh was considered a "god", they could have been jailed for such a minor offense as looking up at the wrong moment, or using the wrong title when addressing a member of the king's court. If their crimes were really bad, like treason or conspiracy, I think that would have been stated in the text. In any case, they are now in a place of suffering, just like Joseph.

The lesson in this part of the story is that it doesn't matter what our circumstances are, it is how we react to them. There is no joy in slavery, nor is there in being falsely accused of horrible evil, and there certainly is no joy in prison. And yet, Joseph rises above it all.

I am reminded of an old sermon story about a scalding hot sidewalk. On the sidewalk is a lump of clay and a lump of hard wax. The sun beats down and softens the wax, making it malleable enough to sculpt into something beautiful, or even make into a candle to provide light. The same Sun beats down on the clay, baking it, and turning it into adobe. Adobe is brittle and, under pressure, crumbles into dust. Joseph was Wax, and the two servants of Pharoah were Adobe. The Prison wasn't different, their hearts were.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

God Bless America.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen

Psalm 6

To the leader: with stringed instruments; according to The Sheminith. A Psalm of David.

1 O Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger,
or discipline me in your wrath.
2 Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am languishing;
O Lord, heal me, for my bones are shaking with terror.
3 My soul also is struck with terror,
while you, O Lord—how long?

4 Turn, O Lord, save my life;
deliver me for the sake of your steadfast love.
5 For in death there is no remembrance of you;
in Sheol who can give you praise?

6 I am weary with my moaning;
every night I flood my bed with tears;
I drench my couch with my weeping.
7 My eyes waste away because of grief;
they grow weak because of all my foes.

8 Depart from me, all you workers of evil,
for the Lord has heard the sound of my weeping.
9 The Lord has heard my supplication;
the Lord accepts my prayer.
10 All my enemies shall be ashamed and struck with terror;
they shall turn back, and in a moment be put to shame.

The lesson in this part of the story is that it doesn’t matter what our circumstances are, it is how we react to them.

Good life lesson.

The Prison wasn't different, their hearts were.

And your heart has been grieving, and yesterday made it worse. Still praying for Jerusalem but also, and more importantly just now, for you.

To: Hebrews 11:6

Thank you.

On top of everything else, I found out someone sabotaged both of my vehicles with roofing nails in my driveway. I reported it to the police, and I know who it is, but I can’t prove anything.

So I spent the morning in the police station drawing diagrams and taking pictures of the nails, etc.

A flat tire on my car would mean a call to AAA. A blowout on a Harley Tire could mean my untimely demise.

Like I need this.

I appreciate your prayers.

Dear TianaHighrider,

God puts the right words at the right time to be read by the right people when it is the right thing for them to read. :-)

I needed today’s message too.

The template is already coded, and the Scripture and prayer are already formatted every morning, but the little sermon is always spontaneous. It takes about an hour to compose, and Tippy spends the time in a crate with a special treat. It’s her “quiet time” after an hour-long walk and training session, and breakfast.

It’s also my special time with the Lord, and I never know in advance with whom the message will resonate.

Thank you for your kind words of affirmation for this ministry. It means a lot to me.

(((HUGS)))
