Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Genesis 39
Joseph and Potiphar’s Wife
39 Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt. Potiphar, an Egyptian who was one of Pharaoh’s officials, the captain of the guard, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him there.
2 The Lord was with Joseph so that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master. 3 When his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord gave him success in everything he did, 4 Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned. 5 From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the Lord blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph. The blessing of the Lord was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field. 6 So Potiphar left everything he had in Joseph’s care; with Joseph in charge, he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate.
Now Joseph was well-built and handsome, 7 and after a while his master’s wife took notice of Joseph and said, “Come to bed with me!”
8 But he refused. “With me in charge,” he told her, “my master does not concern himself with anything in the house; everything he owns he has entrusted to my care. 9 No one is greater in this house than I am. My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?” 10 And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even be with her.
11 One day he went into the house to attend to his duties, and none of the household servants was inside. 12 She caught him by his cloak and said, “Come to bed with me!” But he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house.
13 When she saw that he had left his cloak in her hand and had run out of the house, 14 she called her household servants. “Look,” she said to them, “this Hebrew has been brought to us to make sport of us! He came in here to sleep with me, but I screamed. 15 When he heard me scream for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house.”
16 She kept his cloak beside her until his master came home. 17 Then she told him this story: “That Hebrew slave you brought us came to me to make sport of me. 18 But as soon as I screamed for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house.”
19 When his master heard the story his wife told him, saying, “This is how your slave treated me,” he burned with anger. 20 Joseph’s master took him and put him in prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were confined.
But while Joseph was there in the prison, 21 the Lord was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden. 22 So the warden put Joseph in charge of all those held in the prison, and he was made responsible for all that was done there. 23 The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph’s care, because the Lord was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.

As the Activities Director in a small nursing home, it was my job to coordinate the Monthly Birthday Party. I called my favorite violinist Lucy, (who later went on to be First Chair in a Major Symphony Orchestra!), and her accompanist to provide some classy entertainment. Then I informed the Nursing Staff that the party was at 2:00PM, in order that the patients could be brought into the Dining Room. Housekeeping was requested to have the tables cleared right after lunch so I could make room for the wheelchairs. Then I went into the kitchen to request the Birthday Cake. Hugo, the 300-Pound Food Service Director, backed me up against the stove and said, "IF I BAKE A CAKE FOR YOU, WHAT ARE YOU GONNA DO FOR ME?"
Well, I had no idea if he was just being a jerk or if this was genuine "Sexual Harassment" so I pushed him away , said "JUST MAKE THE #$%& CAKE, HUGO!" and then went straight to the Administrator.
Jeff, the Administrator, was horrified, as he saw it was a clear case of sexual harrassment on his watch, and could lead to huge legal complications. He begged me to let him speak to Hugo first before I took it to the Authorities. I consented. Before the day was out, I received an abject apology from Hugo, and that was the end of that.
Hugo and I were both Department Heads, so this was an incident among equals. Things are much harder to resolve when the victim is in a subserviant position to the attacker, which is the case with Teacher/Student abuse, or Manager/Worker abuse, or in many family situations. It was also the situation with Joseph. He was a slave. He was in a situation that must have caused immense internal conflict. If he had given in to Potiphar's wife, he may have received even more favored status in the household. As it turned out, refusing her advances got him into more trouble than he already was. And yet, he maintained his own integrity by being true to himself, and true to his God.
Things could have turned out differently for me after the incident. Nobody heard what Hugo had said to me, but EVERYBODY heard what I said to him. He could have claimed that I was the one being abusive. But, Praise God, that is not how it worked out. I eventually changed jobs to work at a nicer place, and they needed a Food Service Supervisor. Guess who I saw coming in for an interview? He didn't dare give me as a reference, even though I worked there and was a department head. He was so nervous in the interview that he wasn't hired. I hadn't said a word, but didn't need to.
We hear no more about Potiphar and his Wife. They do not appear again in the story, even after Joseph becomes the second-most powerful man in Egypt. He is not even mentioned as the Captain of the Guard anymore. Joseph does not seek him out to punish him for believing a lie and throwing Joseph into prison. He didn't need to. It appears that God took care of it, and Potiphar, like Hugo, faded into history.

Psalm 64
To the leader. A Psalm of David.
1 Hear my voice, O God, in my complaint;
preserve my life from the dread enemy.
2 Hide me from the secret plots of the wicked,
from the scheming of evildoers,
3 who whet their tongues like swords,
who aim bitter words like arrows,
4 shooting from ambush at the blameless;
they shoot suddenly and without fear.
5 They hold fast to their evil purpose;
they talk of laying snares secretly,
thinking, ‘Who can see us?*
6 Who can search out our crimes?*
We have thought out a cunningly conceived plot.’
For the human heart and mind are deep.
7 But God will shoot his arrow at them;
they will be wounded suddenly.
8 Because of their tongue he will bring them to ruin;*
all who see them will shake with horror.
9 Then everyone will fear;
they will tell what God has brought about,
and ponder what he has done.
10 Let the righteous rejoice in the Lord
and take refuge in him.
Let all the upright in heart glory.
