Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Genesis 38

Judah and Tamar

38 At that time, Judah left his brothers and went down to stay with a man of Adullam named Hirah. 2 There Judah met the daughter of a Canaanite man named Shua. He married her and made love to her; 3 she became pregnant and gave birth to a son, who was named Er. 4 She conceived again and gave birth to a son and named him Onan. 5 She gave birth to still another son and named him Shelah. It was at Kezib that she gave birth to him.

6 Judah got a wife for Er, his firstborn, and her name was Tamar. 7 But Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the Lord’s sight; so the Lord put him to death.

8 Then Judah said to Onan, “Sleep with your brother’s wife and fulfill your duty to her as a brother-in-law to raise up offspring for your brother.” 9 But Onan knew that the child would not be his; so whenever he slept with his brother’s wife, he spilled his semen on the ground to keep from providing offspring for his brother. 10 What he did was wicked in the Lord’s sight; so the Lord put him to death also.

11 Judah then said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, “Live as a widow in your father’s household until my son Shelah grows up.” For he thought, “He may die too, just like his brothers.” So Tamar went to live in her father’s household.

12 After a long time Judah’s wife, the daughter of Shua, died. When Judah had recovered from his grief, he went up to Timnah, to the men who were shearing his sheep, and his friend Hirah the Adullamite went with him.

13 When Tamar was told, “Your father-in-law is on his way to Timnah to shear his sheep,” 14 she took off her widow’s clothes, covered herself with a veil to disguise herself, and then sat down at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the road to Timnah. For she saw that, though Shelah had now grown up, she had not been given to him as his wife.

15 When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face. 16 Not realizing that she was his daughter-in-law, he went over to her by the roadside and said, “Come now, let me sleep with you.”

“And what will you give me to sleep with you?” she asked.

17 “I’ll send you a young goat from my flock,” he said.

“Will you give me something as a pledge until you send it?” she asked.

18 He said, “What pledge should I give you?”

“Your seal and its cord, and the staff in your hand,” she answered. So he gave them to her and slept with her, and she became pregnant by him. 19 After she left, she took off her veil and put on her widow’s clothes again.

20 Meanwhile Judah sent the young goat by his friend the Adullamite in order to get his pledge back from the woman, but he did not find her. 21 He asked the men who lived there, “Where is the shrine prostitute who was beside the road at Enaim?”

“There hasn’t been any shrine prostitute here,” they said.

22 So he went back to Judah and said, “I didn’t find her. Besides, the men who lived there said, ‘There hasn’t been any shrine prostitute here.’”

23 Then Judah said, “Let her keep what she has, or we will become a laughingstock. After all, I did send her this young goat, but you didn’t find her.”

24 About three months later Judah was told, “Your daughter-in-law Tamar is guilty of prostitution, and as a result she is now pregnant.”

Judah said, “Bring her out and have her burned to death!”

25 As she was being brought out, she sent a message to her father-in-law. “I am pregnant by the man who owns these,” she said. And she added, “See if you recognize whose seal and cord and staff these are.”

26 Judah recognized them and said, “She is more righteous than I, since I wouldn’t give her to my son Shelah.” And he did not sleep with her again.

27 When the time came for her to give birth, there were twin boys in her womb. 28 As she was giving birth, one of them put out his hand; so the midwife took a scarlet thread and tied it on his wrist and said, “This one came out first.” 29 But when he drew back his hand, his brother came out, and she said, “So this is how you have broken out!” And he was named Perez.[a] 30 Then his brother, who had the scarlet thread on his wrist, came out. And he was named Zerah.[b]

After exhausting my personal library, I started reading Moby Dick for the tenth time. I have a really nice copy, bound in leather with watered silk endpages and color plates. I got it in a second-hand store. The previous owner had penciled in at the heads of certain chapters "OK to Skip". These were Melville's weird little interludes about the Orders of Whales, their Anatomy, Equipment on the Ship, etc. He even has a Chapter about CHOWDER. In my opinion, one does not "read" Moby Dick. What happens is that you "Sign Up" for the Voyage and go wherever it takes you. That means, It's NOT "OK to Skip" anything.

The first time, nearly twelve years ago, that I posted the Story of Joseph, I was so puzzled by Today's Chapter that I skipped over it. I rationalized that it interrupted the important narrative about Joseph, and probably should have been placed before or after. Not only that, it showed the Patriarch Judah behaving badly. It was an embarrassing interlude in an otherwise exciting story.

Well, of course, I should not have skipped over it, as it is very important. It's placement in the story is important as well.

The realization came to me a while later while reading the Book of Ruth. Ruth, you will remember, was the Moabite Widow who faithfully followed her widowed Mother-in-Law Naomi back to Bethlehem. Ruth and Naomi were so impoverished that they had to pick up leftover grain after the harvesters had reaped the field. Although this was a provision of The Law of Moses, it could be dangerous for a young woman, alone, gleaning amongst the hired hands. Ruth gains the favor of the Landowner Boaz, and the two get married. Boaz is a descendant of Judah, and he and Ruth would become the Great Grandparents of King David. None of this could have taken place without Genesis 38. (I could go on about Ruth being a descendant of Lot's Daughters, and that horrid incident in the cave, but that is for another day). Anyway, on Ruth's Wedding Day, the Blessings flow from the lips of her new relatives: "May you be fruitful like Tamar."

The Messiah would eventually come through the Tribe of Judah, but Judah's sons were doing everything they could to prevent that from happening. Tamar was widowed by two of Judah's sons, and was waiting for the third to become of age to marry. Meanwhile, Judah had no intention of giving his third son to Tamar, and so Tamar took matters into her own hands. She knew that Judah would be making an annual journey for sheep-shearing, and ended up pregnant by Judah, thus continuing the family tree. She is not only mentioned in the Book of Ruth, but in the New Testament as well, in Matthew's Genealogy of Jesus of Nazareth.

So, the story is crucial, but what about its placement, right in the middle of the Joseph Story? Well, here is what I think (and it's just a theory!).

We last saw Joseph being carried off into slavery by the Ishmaelites (more sons of Abraham). It looks like the brothers have gotten rid of him for good, and so, life goes on. They will not see Joseph again for many years. A lot can happen in the meantime. The whole debacle with Judah's creepy sons, Tamar's abandonment and desolation, followed by her scheme to bear a child in the line of Judah, may have all taken place during Joseph's exile. While all this was going on, Jacob was in deep mourning for Joseph. It would seem that he transferred his affections to Rachel's other son, Benjamin, which will bring further complications later on.

That means that the placement in the Narrative is Perfect.

This little parenthetical vignette also tackles the issue of Free Will vs. Prophecy Fulfillment. God does not tempt anbody to sin, but He DOES know the end from the beginning and the beginning from the end. If either of Judah's sons had fulfilled his duty as a husband to Tamar, he would have been in the Royal Line, and honored in the various genealogies of the Old and New Testaments. As it is, we only remember one of those guy's names, and it is for what he did in bed. Not very honorable at all! Meanwhile, Tamar has become the Ancestor of a Tribe, of Kings, and the Messiah Himself.

All of the characters in the story acted upon their own Free Will, and sinned because they were sinners. And yet, centuries later, God would use every little action and reaction to bring about the Redemption of Humankind.
