Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Genesis 29
Jacob Marries Leah and Rachel
After Jacob had stayed with him for a whole month, 15 Laban said to him, “Just because you are a relative of mine, should you work for me for nothing? Tell me what your wages should be.”
16 Now Laban had two daughters; the name of the older was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel. 17 Leah had weak[a] eyes, but Rachel had a lovely figure and was beautiful. 18 Jacob was in love with Rachel and said, “I’ll work for you seven years in return for your younger daughter Rachel.”
19 Laban said, “It’s better that I give her to you than to some other man. Stay here with me.” 20 So Jacob served seven years to get Rachel, but they seemed like only a few days to him because of his love for her.
21 Then Jacob said to Laban, “Give me my wife. My time is completed, and I want to make love to her.”
22 So Laban brought together all the people of the place and gave a feast. 23 But when evening came, he took his daughter Leah and brought her to Jacob, and Jacob made love to her. 24 And Laban gave his servant Zilpah to his daughter as her attendant.
25 When morning came, there was Leah! So Jacob said to Laban, “What is this you have done to me? I served you for Rachel, didn’t I? Why have you deceived me?”
26 Laban replied, “It is not our custom here to give the younger daughter in marriage before the older one. 27 Finish this daughter’s bridal week; then we will give you the younger one also, in return for another seven years of work.”
28 And Jacob did so. He finished the week with Leah, and then Laban gave him his daughter Rachel to be his wife. 29 Laban gave his servant Bilhah to his daughter Rachel as her attendant. 30 Jacob made love to Rachel also, and his love for Rachel was greater than his love for Leah. And he worked for Laban another seven years.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Oh LORD, Our God!
How Wonderful and Excellent is Your Holy Name!
And How Present and Eternal Your Word,
Even To This Day!
Abba Father, You Alone Are Worthy,
You Alone Are Lord,
The One True God of Abraham,
The Eternal Rock of Ages,
The Ancient of Days!
It Is You Who Created The Vast Singularities of Space
With A Single Word,
And It Is You Who Knit Each One of Us
In The Secret Place Of our Mother's Womb.
You Created Each Atom,
And You Control The Movement of The Stars.
Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.
Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.
This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.
God Bless America.

One of my favorite TV Programs in the 1960's was "Green Acres". Even the title of the series was ironic. The premise was that Oliver, a high-powered New York attorney, longs for the bucolic life on an American Farm. His glamorous wife Lisa, played by Eva Gabor, can't even think about living anywhere but a penthouse in New York City. But, as the husband, Oliver insists on moving to Hooterville, where he has already purchased a farm property, which in the brochure, looked magnificent. He was ready to settle in as a sort of "Country Squire" with acres of green crops rustling in the wind, amber waves of grain, and flocks and herds grazing peacefully under the Spacious Skies.
As any aficionado of the show knows, that is not what Oliver got. Stuck in the middle of the most unproductive land in the county, barely stood a Dust-Bowl Era abandoned farmhouse, in which nothing worked, and which foiled every attempt to fix it. Hooterville was filled with loveable but weird characters who seemed to be from a different planet than Oliver and Lisa. The hilarity ensued as Oliver and Lisa attempted to adapt to this new lifestyle. My parents (BOTH of them City Folk) loved the series as well. "Fish Out Of Water" comedy is nearly always hysterically funny.
As a Corporate Attorney, Oliver should have known right off the bat that he had been the victim of a scam called "Bait-and-Switch". This scam, mostly in Real Estate, entices the customer with pictures or descriptions of a property for sale. It is nearly always too good to be true. The customer usually has to go through some hoops to get this magnificent prize, either by travelling a long way, investing some non-refundable money, or, as in Jacob's case, going through a legal ceremony. Then, when the customer finally gets the prize, it is different than the one described. The customer usually finds this out after there is nothing he can do to revoke the agreement. He's been "Baited-and-Switched"!
Even today, Brides wear veils. Of course, as a part of our Western customs, the Groom lifts the veil off the Brides face before the actual legal or religious ceremony BEGINS. Evidently, they did not have this particular custom back in Jacob's time. Maybe it was Laban's Bait-and-Switch stunt that started thie custom of unveiling the Bride just before the ceremony...just to make sure.
Poor Leah was also the victim of this scam. She knew that Jacob didn't love her, even when he was being a husband to her. Because her husband didn't bless Leah with Love, God DID. Of her many children would be the Ancestor of King David and hence, The Messiah. Not only that, but it is Leah who is buried in the Cave of Machpelia alongside Jacob.
Rachel, who died in childbirth, is buried near Bethlehem in her own little Tomb. Neither sister got a fair deal, but both are remembered forever with love by anyone who loves the Word of God.

When I got older, I realized Hootersville may have had another meaning—remember Petticoat Junction and the 3 sisters?
And Jacob had two sisters.

Psalm 57
To the leader: Do Not Destroy. Of David. A Miktam, when he fled from Saul, in the cave.
1 Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me,
for in you my soul takes refuge;
in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge,
until the destroying storms pass by.
2 I cry to God Most High,
to God who fulfils his purpose for me.
3 He will send from heaven and save me,
he will put to shame those who trample on me.
Selah
God will send forth his steadfast love and his faithfulness.
4 I lie down among lions
that greedily devour* human prey;
their teeth are spears and arrows,
their tongues sharp swords.
5 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens.
Let your glory be over all the earth.
6 They set a net for my steps;
my soul was bowed down.
They dug a pit in my path,
but they have fallen into it themselves.
Selah
7 My heart is steadfast, O God,
my heart is steadfast.
I will sing and make melody.
8 Awake, my soul!
Awake, O harp and lyre!
I will awake the dawn.
9 I will give thanks to you, O Lord, among the peoples;
I will sing praises to you among the nations.
10 For your steadfast love is as high as the heavens;
your faithfulness extends to the clouds.
11 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens.
Let your glory be over all the earth.
