Genesis 28

Jacob’s Dream at Bethel

10 Jacob left Beersheba and set out for Harran. 11 When he reached a certain place, he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep. 12 He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. 13 There above it[c] stood the Lord, and he said: “I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying. 14 Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring.[d] 15 I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”

16 When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.” 17 He was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven.”

18 Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had placed under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on top of it. 19 He called that place Bethel,[e] though the city used to be called Luz.

20 Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear 21 so that I return safely to my father’s household, then the Lord[f] will be my God 22 and[g] this stone that I have set up as a pillar will be God’s house, and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth.”

Our Father Who Art in Heaven,
Magnified and Sanctified is Your Most Holy Name!
Blessed Are You, Oh LORD, Our God,
King of The Universe,
Who has brought us to This Day.
For You Alone Are Worthy of Worship and Praise.
You Alone Are The One True God of Abraham,
The Ancient of Days
and The Rock of Our Salvation!
How we love You and Thank You Profoundly for Your Faithfulness,
even when we are not faithful to You.

We Repent, Father, of allowing it to get this far,
Of Allowing Our Nation to Stray so Far From You,
Of Forgetting You,
Of Relying On Ourselves Instead of You for Our Sustenance,
Of allowing the Media, Academia,
Hollywood, and the Left to dictate to us
What is right and wrong,
Instead of Your Holy Word!
Of Slipping into complacency and forgetting You,
We are so sorry, LORD.

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

Good Morning! I had Today's Devotional all written up and my computer crashed. I can't seem to recover it. I'll work on it, but enjoy today's reading anyway. Commentary to came later in the day, if I can get it together. Thanks for your patience.

During a post that took me over an hour to compose, my computer suddenly crashed. I was not able to retrieve any of it, so I am starting over. The post had lots of links in it, and maybe that was the cause of the crash, so I will not post links this time around. Anyway, Here Goes:

For decades thare has been a controvesy among Rock Music Fans as to "What is the Greatest Power-Ballad of All Time?" The two leading contenders are "Dream On" by Aerosmith, and "Stairway To Heaven" by Led Zeppelin. Although the two songs bear absolutely no resemblence to each other, they are both about the same subject: Fear of Death. "Dream On" speaks of seeing oneself aging (Everytime I look in the mirror, I see the lines in my face getting clearer...the past is gone..), and "Stairway To Heaven" was written as a way of coping with the death of a child. Neither song has a Biblical viewpoint, but both songs use Biblical imagery. Eric Clapton did the same type of thing when he wrote "Tears in Heaven" to cope with the death of his little boy who fell out a window. It shows how deeply the stories from Genesis are rooted in our Culture and Our Civilization.

Jacob's Dream about a Stairway to Heaven did not indicate that it is something we can climb ourselves. The Angels go up and down, but Jacob is still on the ground, Dreaming On.

Unlike the Led Zeppelin song, we can't "buy" a Stairway to Heaven, because the Cost is more than any of us could ever afford. It isn't Dreaming, or Buying, or even CLIMBING (like the Old Spiritual Song) that assures us a place in Heaven. It is the Death, Resurrection, and Grace of Jesus.

And so, as the lines in MY face get clearer, I am looking forward to HIM knowing my Name when I see Him in Heaven, and I don't even need a Stairway to get there. He is THE WAY, The Truth, and the Life, and no man gets to the Father without Him.

Stores that sell guitars go nuts every time some amateur tries to play "Stairway To Heaven" on every guitar in the shop. EEK!
