Genesis 22

Nahor’s Sons

20 Some time later Abraham was told, “Milkah is also a mother; she has borne sons to your brother Nahor: 21 Uz the firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel (the father of Aram), 22 Kesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph and Bethuel.” 23 Bethuel became the father of Rebekah. Milkah bore these eight sons to Abraham’s brother Nahor. 24 His concubine, whose name was Reumah, also had sons: Tebah, Gaham, Tahash and Maakah.

Our Father in Heaven,
Magnified and Sanctified is Your Most Holy Name!
We Come into Your Glorious Presence With Singing,
And into Your Courts With Praise!
For You Alone Are Worthy,
You Alone Are LORD,
You Alone Are The Most High,
The Great I AM.
God of Abraham,
Isaac and Jacob,
We Worship You and You Alone,
Creator of All That Is,
And Sovereign LORD of All Nature,
Which is Under Your Control at All Times.
How conceited we humans can be,
Thinking that we somehow can control the mighty forces
That are Yours and Yours Alone!
What hubris, to think that somehow we are little gods
who can influence and change the course of climate,
history,
or Your Will!

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

After the shattering drama of the Binding of Isaac comes this little domestic footnote about Nahor, Abraham's brother. It may not seem important right now, but I feel certain we shall see these names pop up again somewhere in Scrioture. If anything, it shows that, even as the very foundation of the Line of Messiah was being established, life went on all around it.

When you or I are going through a particularly trying or traumatic time, the world around us doesn't stop functioning. Wars continue in many regions, the World Economy keeps booming and busting, and more people are born as others pass away. To the individual, the present crisis feels like the worst thing that has ever happened, and it seems inconceivable that nobody else seems to want to drop everything and rush to provide comfort.

It may have seemed that way to Abraham. Here, he had just gone through the most harrowing trial of his lifetime, and his brother was busy making babies. Perhaps God allowed this little paragraph to slip into the most pivotal, dramatic, and prophetic scene in the entire Torah, to show us all our own frail humanity.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.
