A Synagogue in Florida is suing the state over its abortion law, arguing it violates the religious freedom of Jewish people

A synagogue in Florida is suing the state over a new law that bans most abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy, arguing it infringes upon their religious freedom and violates the Jewish faith.

The lawsuit was filed last week by the Congregation L'Dor Va-Dor of Boynton Beach, located in Palm Beach County. Under Jewish law, abortion is "required if necessary to protect the health, mental or physical well-being of the woman" and for other reasons that would not be allowed under the bill, according to the lawsuit.

Florida previously allowed abortions up to 24 weeks into a pregnancy, but Gov. Ron DeSantis signed the 15-week abortion ban into law in April and it's set to take effect on July 1. The bill does allow abortion to save the life of the pregnant person or prevent serious injury to them.

"The act prohibits Jewish women from practicing their faith free of government intrusion and this violates their privacy rights and religious freedom," the lawsuit said, adding: "Forcing parenthood upon women against their will harms women, their families, our society, and the religious freedom of those who do not share the views reflected in the act."

The lawsuit is the second challenge to the Florida bill, with Planned Parenthood and other reproductive care providers filing a lawsuit against the state on June 1.

The bill is among the latest abortion bans to be enacted in red states recently. While Roe v. Wade enshrined the constitutional right to an abortion up to fetus viability, about 24 weeks, a draft Supreme Court opinion that leaked last month indicated the landmark ruling could soon be overturned.

You could make the same argument against barring human sacrifice in general.

I will guess this synagogue is the Jewish equivalent of a unitarian universalist church.

Not allowing human sacrifices to moloch is a violation of the first amendment too. Right?

Same with gender mutilation.

Nonsense! The case should be dismissed within minutes.

“ What is up is down. And vice-versa. Upside down world that has evolved due to satan everywhere.”

Pope Paul VI predicts this in 1968 in his study regarding birth control, Humanae Vitae.

Judaism requires you to be able to have one more than 15 weeks after pregnancy.

Rather astounding.

Plainly not true.

While Moses was up on the mountain the Jews made and worshipped a golden calf.

Seems some Jews still worship that gold(en) idol.

Rabbi Moshe Feinstein, certainly the acknowledged authority in America on Jewish law, ruled this:

“Not only are Jews prohibited from having an abortion (except in the most extreme circumstances), but they are prohibited from assisting non-Jews from having an abortion too. According to halacha, abortion is prohibited for non-Jews; it’s actually a capital crime. A Jewish doctor may not perform an abortion even if it would result in antipathy towards Jews.” (Igros Moshe, Choshen Mishpat 2:73:8)

Any so called ‘rights’ to murder an unborn child was put into the Jewish religious laws many years after the Ten Commandments and the 600+ other laws were given by God and the Sanhedrin ...

But since the Jews were upset when pregnant women and their unborn babies were experimented upon, and abortions caused in the concentration camps of Europe, I doubt if there are any such allowances ...

Revolk their tax free status as no officially recognized religion should allow the murder of the unborn in the womb.

Religion FAIL

Abortion is human sacrifice. When Israel fell away from God, they fell into the human sacrifice trap laid for them by their enemies. That is why Gpd gave them the land of Canaan.

Anyone else think this reasoning is bizarre?

My liberal friend is pushing this argument as she’s desperately trying to find some wedge to use against the Florida law or, possibly, the Supreme Court finding. I truly don’t think logic has anything to do with it. It’s extremists on the left that are trying to pretend that the Florida law is extreme on the right. The Florida law hits right down the middle, where most people are. The Jewish religious argument just a stopgap argument for the “I can do anything with my body except take ivermectin” people until the next absurd argument occurs to someone.
