Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Genesis 20
Abraham and Abimelek
20 Now Abraham moved on from there into the region of the Negev and lived between Kadesh and Shur. For a while he stayed in Gerar, 2 and there Abraham said of his wife Sarah, “She is my sister.” Then Abimelek king of Gerar sent for Sarah and took her.
3 But God came to Abimelek in a dream one night and said to him, “You are as good as dead because of the woman you have taken; she is a married woman.”
4 Now Abimelek had not gone near her, so he said, “Lord, will you destroy an innocent nation? 5 Did he not say to me, ‘She is my sister,’ and didn’t she also say, ‘He is my brother’? I have done this with a clear conscience and clean hands.”
6 Then God said to him in the dream, “Yes, I know you did this with a clear conscience, and so I have kept you from sinning against me. That is why I did not let you touch her. 7 Now return the man’s wife, for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you and you will live. But if you do not return her, you may be sure that you and all who belong to you will die.”
8 Early the next morning Abimelek summoned all his officials, and when he told them all that had happened, they were very much afraid. 9 Then Abimelek called Abraham in and said, “What have you done to us? How have I wronged you that you have brought such great guilt upon me and my kingdom? You have done things to me that should never be done.” 10 And Abimelek asked Abraham, “What was your reason for doing this?”
11 Abraham replied, “I said to myself, ‘There is surely no fear of God in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife.’ 12 Besides, she really is my sister, the daughter of my father though not of my mother; and she became my wife. 13 And when God had me wander from my father’s household, I said to her, ‘This is how you can show your love to me: Everywhere we go, say of me, “He is my brother.”’”
14 Then Abimelek brought sheep and cattle and male and female slaves and gave them to Abraham, and he returned Sarah his wife to him. 15 And Abimelek said, “My land is before you; live wherever you like.”
16 To Sarah he said, “I am giving your brother a thousand shekels[a] of silver. This is to cover the offense against you before all who are with you; you are completely vindicated.”
17 Then Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelek, his wife and his female slaves so they could have children again, 18 for the Lord had kept all the women in Abimelek’s household from conceiving because of Abraham’s wife Sarah.

_______________________________________________________
As we discussed before when we looked at Genesis 12, the three stories in Genesis about claiming a wife to be a "sister" could be previews of actual experiences that will befall the People of Israel generations later. The parallels in Chapter 12 are pretty easy to spot: Famine sends Abram to Egypt, Sarai is taken into the king's harem (bondage), Plagues, and being set free with the spoils of Egypt are all obvious references to The Exodus. The references in Chapter 20 are a bit more difficult to spot.
The Sojourn in Egypt was not the last time the Israelites would find themselves in Exile and Bondage. There would be another, brought about by Babylon, in which the entire city of Jerusalem would be destroyed, and the people carried off to Mesopotamia. The Books of Jeremiah, Lamentations, and several "Minor" Prophets chronicle this event. The Book of Daniel gives us an intimate account of some of the Captives, including Daniel himself. The Book of Esther gives an even more interesting parallel, as Esther was actually taken into the king's harem, like Sarah so many generations earlier.
While the Israelites were in captivity, Babylon changed hands a number of times. King Cyrus of Persia is credited with sending a large contingent of Israelites back home with money and equipment, to rebuild Jerusalem and its Temple. This is described in the Books of Ezra and Nehemiah. Cyrus's commtment to a primitive declaration of "human rights" is preserved in "The Cyrus Cylinder" and the present-day country of Iran (Persia) is (ironically) very proud of that fact. It doesn't seem to matter that there are no human rights in Iran, especially for women, but whatever.
Could it be that this second incident is a prefiguring of the Exile to Babylon? And what of the third incident, involving Isaac and Rebecca? Which Exile, Captivity, and Return do you suppose THAT incident is predicting?
Please continue in Prayer for Jim Rob. Thanks.

Psalm 36
To the leader. Of David, the servant of the Lord.
1 Transgression speaks to the wicked
deep in their hearts;
there is no fear of God
before their eyes.
2 For they flatter themselves in their own eyes
that their iniquity cannot be found out and hated.
3 The words of their mouths are mischief and deceit;
they have ceased to act wisely and do good.
4 They plot mischief while on their beds;
they are set on a way that is not good;
they do not reject evil.
5 Your steadfast love, O Lord, extends to the heavens,
your faithfulness to the clouds.
6 Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains,
your judgements are like the great deep;
you save humans and animals alike, O Lord.
7 How precious is your steadfast love, O God!
All people may take refuge in the shadow of your wings.
8 They feast on the abundance of your house,
and you give them drink from the river of your delights.
9 For with you is the fountain of life;
in your light we see light.
10 O continue your steadfast love to those who know you,
and your salvation to the upright of heart!
11 Do not let the foot of the arrogant tread on me,
or the hand of the wicked drive me away.
12 There the evildoers lie prostrate;
they are thrust down, unable to rise.
