Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Genesis 19

Lot and His Daughters

30 Lot and his two daughters left Zoar and settled in the mountains, for he was afraid to stay in Zoar. He and his two daughters lived in a cave. 31 One day the older daughter said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is no man around here to give us children—as is the custom all over the earth. 32 Let’s get our father to drink wine and then sleep with him and preserve our family line through our father.”

33 That night they got their father to drink wine, and the older daughter went in and slept with him. He was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up.

34 The next day the older daughter said to the younger, “Last night I slept with my father. Let’s get him to drink wine again tonight, and you go in and sleep with him so we can preserve our family line through our father.” 35 So they got their father to drink wine that night also, and the younger daughter went in and slept with him. Again he was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up.

36 So both of Lot’s daughters became pregnant by their father. 37 The older daughter had a son, and she named him Moab[g]; he is the father of the Moabites of today. 38 The younger daughter also had a son, and she named him Ben-Ammi[h]; he is the father of the Ammonites[i] of today.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Oh LORD,
You are Forever Holy and Righteous.
How Excellent is Your Name!
It is You Who Stretched out the Heavens,
And it is You Who laid the Foundations of the Earth.
You Alone Are Worthy of Praise,
and You Alone Are The One True God of Abraham!
Ancient of Days,
Rock of Ages,
Eternal,
and Almighty, We Can Do Nothing But Fall On Our Faces
Before You in Endless Worship and Thanksgiving!
We Thank You For Your Mighty, Holy,
and Immutable Word!

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

God Bless America.

As some of you may know, this Devotional Thread has been on Free Republic for nearly Twelve Years. When it was first suggested to me, I immediately PM'd Jim Rob, the founder of the site, for his permission.

"Sure!" he replied. "We can never have too many Prayer Threads!"

Now, Jim Rob needs OUR prayers. Due to the fact that he spends most of his time in a wheelchair, he developed pressure sores that exploded into a systemic infection. I have been praying for him day and night. He is reportedy getting better, but is not out of the woods yet. Please, if you will, remember him in your prayers today. Thanks!

The creepiness of today's story, combined with reminiscing about the very beginnings of this Daily Devotional Thread, reminds me of a significant blunder I made in the first year of posting it. I was relating one of my favorite Bible Stories, that of The Patriarch Joseph. The story, which occupies the Book of Genesis from Chapter 39 to the end, is suddenly interrupted by the seemingly irrelevant tale of Judah and Tamar. In this sordid episode, Judah behaves like a total jerk towards his daughter-in-law Tamar and ends up impregnating her. The deceit, betrayal, and self-righteousness in the story are appalling, and I felt "uncomfortable" posting or commenting on it. I just thought "Eyew," and skipped over the chapter. Nobody seemed to notice. I thought I had gotten away with something.

Then, came the references back to this parenthetical tale that interrupted the Story of Joseph. The first one was at the end of The Book of Ruth, when the folks of Bethlehem wish Ruth best wishes on her marriage to Boaz. They say, "May you be fruitful like Tamar." That's the same Tamar as the woman in the creepy story that I skipped over. That means that Tamar is an ancestor of King David. The line would not have continued on from Judah if Tamar hadn't deceived him. Later, in the book of Matthew, Tamar is one of only four women who are mentioned in the Genealogy of Jesus. Who knew? From that point onward, I vowed never to cut out or skim over anything in Scripture, no matter how creepy it may seem to me at the time.

That, of course, brings us to Today's story. Please bear with me as we unpack it together.

1. Where Do I Go? The Angels rescued Lot and his family, and, one by one they dropped away, due to mockery, tradition, nostalgia, or other motives. Soon, Lot was left with just his two daughters, and the Angels leading them, probably back to Abraham. But Lot was so filled with FEAR that he didn't want to go by way of the Plains, and begged to be dropped off in yet another city, a small one named Zoar. There is no indication that Zoar was any better than Sodom, but it was spared for the sake of Lot.

2. Free Will: God knows what is best for us, but He doesn't force His Will on us. Lot, you want to go to Zoar and live in a cave? Fine. I am not going to FORCE you to be saved.

3. Nature vs. Nurture: So Lot holes up in a cave with his two daughters and there is no hope of ever having any more children or grandchildren. This is due to FEAR. Even the little city of Zoar frightens him. The daughters, who were raised in "Sin City", have no moral compass, no family loyalty, and no system of ethics to direct their behavior. And so, even though the blood of Shem and Noah course through their veins, they behave in the way that they have been raised. They each have a baby by their father Lot, whom they deceived into impregnating them. Unlike Tamar's child, however, these babies do not go on to be the ancestors of Kings, but the ancestors of Israel's greatest enemies, Moab and Ammon.

In the midst of all this sordidness and sin, however, there is a precious jewel of hope. Ruth, who will show up generations later to be the Great Grandmother of King David, was from Moab.

I promise I will NEVER skip over anything again!

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

God Bless America.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Psalm 4

To the leader: with stringed instruments. A Psalm of David.

1 Answer me when I call, O God of my right!
You gave me room when I was in distress.
Be gracious to me, and hear my prayer.

2 How long, you people, shall my honour suffer shame?
How long will you love vain words, and seek after lies?
Selah
3 But know that the Lord has set apart the faithful for himself;
the Lord hears when I call to him.

4 When you are disturbed,* do not sin;
ponder it on your beds, and be silent.
Selah
5 Offer right sacrifices,
and put your trust in the Lord.

6 There are many who say, ‘O that we might see some good!
Let the light of your face shine on us, O Lord!’
7 You have put gladness in my heart
more than when their grain and wine abound.

8 I will both lie down and sleep in peace;
for you alone, O Lord, make me lie down in safety.

Indeed, there are two prostitutes in seven generations of the Davidic line: Rahab and then Tamar was prostitute for a day, for one particular man.

The more we study His Word, the more we find hope. The Lord has used very broken people to accomplish His Will. He came to heal the sick and the lost. For that, I am especially grateful as I can be pretty sick and lost at times.

Joining you in prayer as we lift JimRob, his medical team, his sons and those around him. We ask for mercy and healing. We ask for their blessings.

In Jesus’ name
Amen
