Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Genesis 14

Abram Rescues Lot

14 At the time when Amraphel was king of Shinar,[a] Arioch king of Ellasar, Kedorlaomer king of Elam and Tidal king of Goyim, 2 these kings went to war against Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboyim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar). 3 All these latter kings joined forces in the Valley of Siddim (that is, the Dead Sea Valley). 4 For twelve years they had been subject to Kedorlaomer, but in the thirteenth year they rebelled.

5 In the fourteenth year, Kedorlaomer and the kings allied with him went out and defeated the Rephaites in Ashteroth Karnaim, the Zuzites in Ham, the Emites in Shaveh Kiriathaim 6 and the Horites in the hill country of Seir, as far as El Paran near the desert. 7 Then they turned back and went to En Mishpat (that is, Kadesh), and they conquered the whole territory of the Amalekites, as well as the Amorites who were living in Hazezon Tamar.

8 Then the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboyim and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar) marched out and drew up their battle lines in the Valley of Siddim 9 against Kedorlaomer king of Elam, Tidal king of Goyim, Amraphel king of Shinar and Arioch king of Ellasar—four kings against five. 10 Now the Valley of Siddim was full of tar pits, and when the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, some of the men fell into them and the rest fled to the hills. 11 The four kings seized all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah and all their food; then they went away. 12 They also carried off Abram’s nephew Lot and his possessions, since he was living in Sodom.

13 A man who had escaped came and reported this to Abram the Hebrew. Now Abram was living near the great trees of Mamre the Amorite, a brother[b] of Eshkol and Aner, all of whom were allied with Abram. 14 When Abram heard that his relative had been taken captive, he called out the 318 trained men born in his household and went in pursuit as far as Dan. 15 During the night Abram divided his men to attack them and he routed them, pursuing them as far as Hobah, north of Damascus. 16 He recovered all the goods and brought back his relative Lot and his possessions, together with the women and the other people.

17 After Abram returned from defeating Kedorlaomer and the kings allied with him, the king of Sodom came out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley).

18 Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High, 19 and he blessed Abram, saying,

“Blessed be Abram by God Most High,

    Creator of heaven and earth.

20  And praise be to God Most High,

    who delivered your enemies into your hand.”
Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.

21 The king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the people and keep the goods for yourself.”

22 But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “With raised hand I have sworn an oath to the Lord, God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth, 23 that I will accept nothing belonging to you, not even a thread or the strap of a sandal, so that you will never be able to say, ‘I made Abram rich.’ 24 I will accept nothing but what my men have eaten and the share that belongs to the men who went with me—to Aner, Eshkol and Mamre. Let them have their share.”

You Name Shall be Praised.
For You Alone Are Worthy,

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,

_______________________________________________________

It is a coincidence that this particular Chapter has arrived in our reading of Genesis on the 78th Anniversary of D-Day, the Allied Invasion of Europe in 1944. There was no question that it needed to be done. The Nazis and their allies were as evil as could be imagined, and HAD to be stopped. To this day, we have documentation that the Allies embarked upon this venture with lots of Prayer. We have records of Prayers by Churchill, FDR, and General Eisenhower. They had no guarantee that the Allies would win, but, if they lost, it would have been the End of Civilization.

We read yesterday of how Abram and Lot had to part ways because of their increasing herds. Abram, who sought Peace, gave Lot the first choice of where he would settle. Lot chose "The Cities of the Plain", as it was lush and well-watered, and looked great from a distance. The people of those cities, however, had become extremely wicked, even though they had been blessed in every way.

Their wickedness, as we see here, was not just sexual immorality, although there was plenty of that, and they have become famous for it. From today's Chapter we can see that they were also into Warfare, Duplicity, Invasion, Conquest, Rape, Kidnapping, and Greed. Lot and his family, now living in Sodom, were kidnapped. And, of course, Uncle Abram had to rescue him. This would not be the last time, either.

Abram's expedition, like D-Day, was one of Rescue, not Conquest. In fact, when Abram won, he did not demand the spoils of war...not even a shoelace! He just asks that his troops get paid their due and go home. Instead of clinging to Abram in gratitude and safety, Lot goes back to Sodom with his family. (That reminds me of how Europe turned its back on the USA not long after WW2, but maybe I'm stretching the point here. Your mileage may differ.)

As we shall see, Abram will be called upon to rescue Lot and his family yet again, but we shall also see how Lot's wife, daughters, and Lot himself have been corrupted by their environment.

On the way home from the battle, the most wonderful and mysterious thing happens to Abram. He encounters Melchizedek, whose name means "King of Righteousness". Melchizedek is the king of Salem, which most Bible Scholars think is Jerusalem. Abram gives Melchizedek a tenth of everything he has, which is an act of worship. Since God would not allow Abram to worship anyone but Himself, it is theorized that Melchizedek was a "Theophany", or a manifestation of God and a pre-figuring of The Messiah as King. Since people have been debating the Identity of Melchizedek for several thousand years, your opinion may be different than mine, but that theory makes sense to me.

My Parents recognized D-Day every year by telling us kids the Story, over and over again. It was a pivotal point in their lives. Everybody remembers where they were and what they were doing when they heard the news. Mom's High School Graduation venue had to be changed, because Boston's Symphony Hall had not been cleaned up from the Boston Pops Concert the night before. Everything STOPPED and everybody gave the event their full attention.

Maybe the Whole World needs to STOP and Pay Attention once again.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

"He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification." (Romans 4:25)

God Bless America.

Blessings To All Who Visit This Garden of Prayer.

Hallelujah and Amen

how Europe turned its back on the USA not long after WW2

When de Gaulle had become France's President he summoned the American ambassador and demanded America remove all its soldiers from French soil. The ambassador asked, "Does that include those buried here?"

A hearty AMEN!

Psalm 17

A Prayer of David.

1 Hear a just cause, O Lord; attend to my cry;
give ear to my prayer from lips free of deceit.
2 From you let my vindication come;
let your eyes see the right.

3 If you try my heart, if you visit me by night,
if you test me, you will find no wickedness in me;
my mouth does not transgress.
4 As for what others do, by the word of your lips
I have avoided the ways of the violent.
5 My steps have held fast to your paths;
my feet have not slipped.

6 I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God;
incline your ear to me, hear my words.
7 Wondrously show your steadfast love,
O saviour of those who seek refuge
from their adversaries at your right hand.

8 Guard me as the apple of the eye;
hide me in the shadow of your wings,
9 from the wicked who despoil me,
my deadly enemies who surround me.
10 They close their hearts to pity;
with their mouths they speak arrogantly.
11 They track me down;* now they surround me;
they set their eyes to cast me to the ground.
12 They are like a lion eager to tear,
like a young lion lurking in ambush.

13 Rise up, O Lord, confront them, overthrow them!
By your sword deliver my life from the wicked,
14 from mortals—by your hand, O Lord—
from mortals whose portion in life is in this world.
May their bellies be filled with what you have stored up for them;
may their children have more than enough;
may they leave something over to their little ones.

15 As for me, I shall behold your face in righteousness;
when I awake I shall be satisfied, beholding your likeness.

Great analogy to D-Day.

And one of its accomplishments was the eventual liberation of the concentration camps.
