Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Genesis 11

The Tower of Babel

11 Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. 2 As people moved eastward,[a] they found a plain in Shinar[b] and settled there.

3 They said to each other, “Come, let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. 4 Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.”

5 But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building. 6 The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. 7 Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.”

8 So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. 9 That is why it was called Babel[c]—because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world. From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth.

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,

We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,

To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

The Tower of Babel has inspired artists for centuries, and yet, Mankind has yet to learn the important lesson that it teaches. Every few decades, some meglomaniac tries to unite the planet (under HIS dominion, of course) and the result is always disastrous. If it isn't Caesar or Napoleon, it's Genghis Khan or Hitler. The death toll from Communism alone is staggering. The biggest excuse that is used to propagate these atrocities is "It's For Your Own Good." That's how the dictators are able to exercise such complete control, by little things like making the trains run on time and providing mindless entertainment for the masses. Both Hitler and Stalin used huge building programs, parades, and the media, to entice people into compliance. The enticement was backed up by brutal repression. This seemed to be the perfect formula to rule the world.

However, like The Tower of Babel, these empires eventually come crashing down. Sometimes it is through neglect and corruption, and sometimes through vicious warfare. Often, the dissolution begins with a conflict of language. As soon as the dictator tries to take over neighbors and force them to speak a common language, the empire begins to crumble. Language is even a factor in the current conflict in The Ukraine.

In the 1870's, a Language was invented called Esperanto. This was designed because The Polish Language was prohibited in the Russian Empire. (hmmmm...sounds familiar?). Anyway, although there are a few thousand Esperanto speakers, it really doesn't unite people. It just adds to the pile of different languages spoken on our planet.

In countries that have been taken over by Islam, people speak their own languages, but the Q'oran remains in Arabic. Islamic scholars claim that it only makes sense in Arabic and that translations do not carry the true meaning. In contrast, The Bible, although originally in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek, has been translated into thousands of languages, and it still has the Message of Salvation.
