For the Pope's meeting with young people in San Pedro, promoted by the Italian Episcopal Conference, they had no better idea than to hire a music idol, the winner of the Sanremo Festival with a song that exalts homosexual love.
It has been a long time since Francis seemed to be a 'prophet in his own land', so to speak, in the sense that Saint Peter's Square, a recurring scene of historical 'full houses', often appears in papal addresses with such a small audience that I would say populated by the usual passers-by and tourists on any given day.
This, in principle, should be indifferent to us. A Pope is the Vicar of Christ, not a popular idol or a charismatic politician, and his fidelity to the mission entrusted to Peter is not measured by audiences.
But, alas, we are in the century of the image, in the era obsessed with what it looks like, how it looks, with the impression it gives. And not a few in the Vatican worry about those growing gaps in St. Peter's Square when the Pope appears in the Vatican loggia.
