Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Revelation 3

To the Church in Laodicea

14 “To the angel of the church in Laodicea write:

These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God’s creation. 15 I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! 16 So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. 17 You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. 18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.

19 Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent. 20 Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.

21 To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat down with my Father on his throne. 22 Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”

Our Father in Heaven,
Magnified and Sanctified is Your Most Holy Name!

It had been a while since I had practiced my bass, as I have been preparing for a Piano Recital in May and have been putting all my energy into that one instrument. Yesterday, I decided that I needed to balance out my practicing, so I poured myself a big mug of black coffee, plugged in the bass, strapped it on, and tuned up. After being neglected for a few weeks, the bass was surprisingly in tune which was delightful because it usually needs a Luthier in the Springtime to straighten out the neck,

I began warming up with some Walking Blues Bass lines, and played the same line in all the different keys, up and down the neck. Then I played some more riffs, always proceeding up and down the neck, backwards, around the Circle of Fifths. (Music-Theory-Geekspeak) Then I played all my scales and modes, up and down, round and round the Circle of Fifths. Then I played the songs I had written for Biker Church, which I hadn't played in a long time. Before I knew it, 45 minutes had passed in musical bliss, and then the phone rang.

So I stopped playing, unstrapped the bass, unplugged it so as not to wear out the battery, turned off the amp, and answered the phone. I grabbed my coffee, which I had not touched up to this point. One big gulp and "Yeaaaccchhh!". It was lukewarm and entirely NASTY. I like Hot Coffee, and I like ICED Coffee, but lukewarm coffee is awful. Well, 45 seconds in the microwave will fix that. I do love my coffee!

The City of Laodicea is the last of the Seven Churches in Revelation. While other churches represented the"Sleeping Church", "Compromised Church", the "Corrupted Church", the "Faithful Church" The "Persecuted Church", and so on, the Laodicea Church is the one described as "Lukewarm". This must have really hit home in the day, because Laodicea, a wealthy town, received its water from a Hot Spring some miles away, which was brought into the town by a Roman Aqueduct. It would start out at the source steaming hot, but arrived in the town lukewarm. Because the water came from a volcanic hot spring, it probably had a lot of minerals in it. Mineral Water is great on ice, or piping hot, but if it's lukewarm, I imagine that it would taste nasty. In fact, you might want to spit it out of your mouth!

Laodicea was so rich that, when they had an earthquake in 60AD, they didn't ask for financial aid from Rome. They were also famous for a factory that made eye salve. One would think that they would have a great church with all this prosperity!

But instead, they were complacent, bored, and "lukewarm".

Jesus does not just chastise without remedy. He tells the Laodicean Church that there is still hope for them. He stands at the door and knocks. He tells them to "apply eye salve" so they can see the truth. And, most of all, He tells them that He loves them. To those whom He loves, He offers correction. All is not lost with "Lukewarm Laodicea".
