Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem

Revelation 2

To the Church in Pergamum

12 “To the angel of the church in Pergamum write:

These are the words of him who has the sharp, double-edged sword. 13 I know where you live—where Satan has his throne. Yet you remain true to my name. You did not renounce your faith in me, not even in the days of Antipas, my faithful witness, who was put to death in your city—where Satan lives.

14 Nevertheless, I have a few things against you: There are some among you who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin so that they ate food sacrificed to idols and committed sexual immorality. 15 Likewise, you also have those who hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans. 16 Repent therefore! Otherwise, I will soon come to you and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.

17 Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it.

Almighty and Eternal Father,
How Glorious and Wonderful You Are!
Your Magnificence and Perfection are Overwhelming.
And yet, even more so, Your Justice,
Your Righteousness,
and Your Profound Holiness!
For It is You Who Made All That Exists,
From the Mightiest Galaxies to the Tiniest Atom.
You Know Us Inside and Out.
Our Hearts and Thoughts belong to You.
For You Alone Are Worthy,
You Alone Are LORD,
You Alone Are The One True God of Abraham,
and Indeed of ALL People.
Your Promises and Precepts are Eternal.
Your Judgments and Word are Forever True.
There is No Shadow of Turning With You.
You Are Faithful Even When We Are Not.
You ARE The Truth.
Let God be True,
and every man be a liar.
Let others choose whom they may serve,
but as for me and my house,
We Shall Serve You, Abba.
And in serving YOU,
We Choose to Believe and Obey Your Word.

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins
of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Set Up His Kingdom,
And Make All Things Right.

There is a store in S.E. Massachussets where my sisters and I love to shop. Although it is headquartered in Rhode Island, there are several outlets within a short drive. They carry everything from non-perishable gourmet foods to oriental rugs, trash bins, pool supplies, gardening supplies, makeup, skin care, shoes, boots, and art supplies. One never knows what one will find, as the stock changes daily, depending on the big lots, bankruptcies, and overstocks that they purchase. The prices are very low, and the service is great.

At checkout, they often ask if you want to donate the change to a charity. Sometimes it's St. Jude's Hospital, sometimes Wounded Warrior Project, and sometimes, when there is a disaster somewhere, the Red Cross.

Last Night was no different, and the cashier asked if I wanted to "round up" to the current charity. When I asked what this week's charity was, she shrugged and said "The UKRAINE."

I patiently questioned. "Just "The UKRAINE?". Not UNESCO, or The Red Cross, or Doctors Without Borders, or the UN? Just 'The UKRAINE'?"

My sister chimed in, "When "LIVE AID" raised all that money to feed starving children in Africa, none of the money went to the kids, but all went into some dictator's coffers. How do we know if this money is going right to the refigees? When I bought a T-Shirt in the Record Store the other day, I knew that the money was going to the Organization taking care of Ukrainian Refugees in Poland."

The cashier was getting frustrated. "Do you want to donate or not?"

"No," I said."

When it was my sister's turn, she donated anyway, probably because she had become embarassed by our behavior. We had inadvertantly been drawn into what became a "Karen-Tag-Team". (YIKES!)

On the way home we discussed what had happened. Sis said it was only change, and didn't matter, but it still bothered me and I said, "How do we know that all that money isn't just to buy Zelinsky a new pair of tap-shoes?" We agreed that corruption is rife within the Charity Business, but that the people who give from the heart are not to blame. God sees what you give and the condition of your soul when you do it. And that is all that matters.

The Letter to the Church in Pergamun is in the "Good News/Bad News/Solution format. Here is the Good news:

These are the words of him who has the sharp, double-edged sword. 13 I know where you live—where Satan has his throne. Yet you remain true to my name. You did not renounce your faith in me, not even in the days of Antipas, my faithful witness, who was put to death in your city—where Satan lives.

From this we can infer that the town was a center for corruption and the occult. Yet, the little church had remained True to the Name of Christ, in spite of being surrounded by the enemy.

Now the Bad News:

Nevertheless, I have a few things against you: There are some among you who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin so that they ate food sacrificed to idols and committed sexual immorality. 15 Likewise, you also have those who hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans.

This is a reference to the Story in the Torah about the Pagan Prophet-For-Hire named Balaam, who was paid a huge sum of money to curse the Israelites. God used an Angel, a Talking Donkey, and Direct Communication to prevent Balaam from his curse, bu Balaam was still able to do heavy damage by using pagan women to entice the Israelite men into sexual immorality and idol worship. It would seem that there were people in the church that were acting like Balaam, allowing immorality to seep in as wolves in sheep's clothing. The mysterious "Nicolatians" were reputed to be of similar intent. Given free rein, these infiltrators could easily destroy the church. And now, for the Solution:

16 Repent therefore! Otherwise, I will soon come to you and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.

17 Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it.

Jesus tells the church to repent. This means "Metanoya", a total changing of the mind about things. Even if society embraces something, if it's wrong, it's WRONG. We are not called to "fit in". But to those who overcome, Chrst has amazing rewards that can't be described.

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.
